One Soldier Killed in Cartel Ambush, Possibly Ten Arrested - Guaymas, Sonora

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

An Army (SEDENA) soldier was killed after a group of alleged hitmen ambushed a group of soldiers in the municipality of Guaymas, Sonora. There are some online rumors that in response ten unknown individuals have been arrested in the Guaymas Valley area.

The Ambush

At approximately 5:50am on the morning of August 6, 2021, SEDENA soldiers were ambushed by a group of armed men. The two soldiers were patrolling the path between the town of Graciano Sánchez and the town of Guadalupe Victoria, just in front of the field ′′ El Arenoso ", which is part of the Francisco Marquez Police Station.

The soldiers were taken by surprise when an unknown group opened fire on them. During the ambush, an agent from the 24th Infantry Battalion of SEDENA was wounded with multiple gunshot wounds from high-caliber firearms. The gunshot wounds were reportedly in the abdomen area and caused the soldier to hemorrhage heavily. Little is known about the events of the ambush and how the two soldiers managed to escape. None of the armed men are believed to have been captured in the shooting.

The officer was transported in a SEDENA “rapid unit” and later transferred to a Mexican Red Cross ambulance. The ambulance drove him to the Naval Military Hospital, but unfortunately he lost his life on the drive to the hospital, before he could be admitted to the emergency room.

According to local media, SEDENA communication personnel refused to identify the name of the victim for the safety of his colleagues and family. "For institutional and discretion issues we cannot specifically share his name with you," it was reported. Sonora Informativo has reported that he was 32-year-old at the time of his death and he was born in Huatabampo, Sonora. The State Attorney General's Office was notified of the incident and will be investigating the incident.

Following the ambush, members of the National Guard, SEDENA and Navy began conducting operations in search of the perpetrators in the Guaymas-Empalme Valley, but so far no arrests have officially been reported.

Of note, multiple publications such as Valor Por Tamaulipas and Sonora Informativo, have reported that it is unofficially known these operations have led to the arrest of 10 armed men however there have been no arrests publicly announced at this time.

The Area

For such a small, rural area, the town of Francisco Marquez has seen a large amount of violence in 2021. In March 2021, the body of a was found lying face up with visible signs of having been beaten. In April 2021, 4 men were killed in a confrontation when members of the NAVY too closely patrolled near a ranch known as El Arenoso and they opened fire, unclear if El Arenoso field and El Arenoso ranch are closeby. In June 2021, armed subjects approached a group of workers, asking for one man specifically and when they found him they shot him dead.

Some cartel groups that may have a presence in the area include La Plaza, a group which reportedly works under Caborca Cartel’s Juan Pablo Quintero Navidad and Sinaloa Cartel affiliated groups as well. La Linea’s Bournes brothers Víctor Noé and Ever José González Bournes used to have a presence in the area but their presence has greatly diminished in recent years. La Opinion has alleged Los Chapitos aligned Los Salazar were behind the attack however they offer no evidence or source for this.
