Altar, Sonora: Military Helicopter Operation to Capture Mystery CDS Leader

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

New videos have emerged online which show the military hunting down a Sinaloa Cartel leader, whose identity is unknown, in Altar, Sonora.

Quick History Review

Altar is a municipality located in the northwestern region of the state of Sonora. The municipality sits along the US-Mexico border.

Historically, this municipality has been known to be controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel subgroup “Gente Nueva de Altar”, who are associated with the los Chapitos and the Salazar crime family.

Gente Nueva de Altar used to be led by Jesús Humberto Limón López, alias “El Cazador”. Cazador’s second-in-command was José Bibiano Cabrera, alias “El Durango”.

El Durango led a small subgroup of hitmen within Gente Nueva de Altar called “Grupo Delta”.

In April 2021, El Durango was arrested by federal authorities. Just two months later, in June 2021, El Cazador was arrested. With both of its major leaders arrested, Gente Nueva de Altar appeared to become less prominent in the Sonora cartel landscape. A year went by without any major news about the group emerging.

Durango’s brother, Francisco Jesús Torres Carranza, alias “El Duranguillo”, allegedly took over leading Grupo Delta in his brother’s absence.  Rumors spread of there being internal strife within Gente Nueva de Altar, with various relatives of Durango and Cazador attempting to seize power from each other.

Then, in July 2022, a major Army (SEDENA) operation was launched in Altar and El Duranguillo was arrested after a series of heavy fire fights and attempts at street negotiations by Sinaloa Cartel hitmen.

Someone is presumed to have taken over leadership of Grupo Delta after the arrest of Duranguillo, but the identity of the new leader has been largely unclear.

Videos of Army Soldiers in Altar

A local social media page called Sonora Informativo reported that on Thursday, March 30, 2023, a military operation which aimed to capture a cartel leader was spotted in Altar, Sonora. Other accounts soon followed suit.

Video - Helicopter Landing
Source: SVOVE76

In the first video, a military helicopter can be seen landing in what looks like a baseball field.

Video - Soldiers Seen Exiting Helicopter

Source: Sonora Informativo

In the footage above, soldiers are seen moving out of the landing zone after getting out of a military helicopter, presumably moving towards their target, on foot. A children’s playground can be seen in the foreground of the footage. The exact location in Altar is unknown.

A military helicopter can be seen flying quite low to the ground, it appears to be following a silver or white colored SUV, which takes a quick turn at an intersection.

Video - Man Seen Running to a White SUV

The video above begins with soldiers moving along a street. Then, footage of a man dressed in blank pants, a black shirt and a black cap who is running towards a light colored SUV parked on the street.

At one point he looks down at his hands, as if selecting his car key from a keyring. A military helicopter can be seen flying quite low to the ground. The helicopter appears to be following a silver or white colored SUV.

Video - Low-Flying Helicopter Follows SUV

Another clip of the helicopter following the light colored SUV which takes a quick turn at an intersection.

Not all of the streets in the small town of Altar have been mapped through the Google Street View car, so determining the exact location for all of these videos is impossible. But the video above is one of the few times where it's possible to identify where it took place.

The SUV the helicopter is following takes a turn at the intersection of Godinez Street and Highway 43, in Altar, Sonora.

Video - SUV Makes a Turn

In the video above, a white SUV is seen taking a sharp right hand turn on an unpaved road in Altar. This is presumably the same white SUV seen in earlier footage.

Video - White SUV Being Seized by Soldiers

Source: SVOVE76

Another clip of the helicopter flying low overhead. Then there is footage of Army soldiers cordoning off a parking lot from civilians as the white SUV is loaded up to be towed. This presumably means that at the very least, the target’s white SUV was seized.

And then comes the frustrating part. As of the writing of this story, there have been no press releases from the federal or state government agencies which acknowledges this operation. Whether the target of the operation was arrested, killed, or managed to slip away is unclear.  The identity of their target is, likewise, unclear.

Local news and national news agencies have not covered the alleged operation which casts doubt upon the event itself.

The cartel news Twitter account Calvarie Locus claims that the Altar military operation captured the leader of Grupo Delta, without giving a name or alias. Another Twitter account, SVOVE76, claims the operation arrested “El Delta”.

Earlier this month, on March 18, there were social media posts, reposted by Andres Pinillo which allegedly showed Gente Nueva Grupo Delta hitmen roaming the rural area of Altar inside pickup trucks. Of note, their trucks were designed to imitate vehicles driven by the Mexican Marines.

These posts, at least, confirm the continued existence of Grupo Delta in the Altar area.

    2. El panu and his bodyguards were arrested they were trying to steal gold and lithium from a mine close by but got betrayed it was undercover army operation they were waiting for them it was a setup. Greedy people will always fail. He was trying to steal it and sell it off to Chinese merchants they are all over Mexico they trading chemicals for precious metals and paying cash also.. the Chinese are propping up the cartels from Michoacán to Baja. We’re do you think they get all this money from and weapons. It’s a lie that they come from the u.s..on the border states yea they do but that’s a given cause they on the border but down south it’s all Chinese. The Chinese have mines and forests for timber in cartel territories controlled only by the cartels no government goes in those territories … now why would that be ..this is why the cartels come in and kick people out or kill them because they don’t want anyone around when the Chinese come in and work the mines and timber.. because they are in business with the cartels. They cannot do legal business they have been blacklisted by most American companies…except to 🇨🇳 Chinese money.. the Chinese are exploiting this and paying way less for precious metals and then selling at retail making huge margins..this cartel problem goes way deeper than anyone thinks.. that battery in your Tesla or in your phone the gold and precious metals used in all electronics this is how they start out with blood and death..every great fortune comes from a great crime..

    2. You're funny, you bash AMLO but this very article shows a time-line of all these government led operations. Ask Hearst, she does the most extensive coverage on this website, if this administration has sat back with their arms crossed and done absolutely nothing against the cartels as you guys claim. You guys are so set on being against AMLO that you're missing the bigger picture. A government operation happens everyday and you two minimize it but when you do a years inventory on all of these captures you get a long list of captures. RCQ, Ovidio, menchos wife and brother, la Vaca and the list goes on.

      Delete
    3. 9:49:
These guys would have been captured no matter who was president. Mexico has been improving in capacity to take on the cartels for the last twenty years.
Twenty years ago, SEDENA didn't even have helmets or bulletproof vests and carried old World War II Mausers. Look at SEDENA now. Twenty years ago, you didn't see SEDENA chasing after high level targets with 3,000 troops and several helicopters and military planes or, like here, where they are looking for, apparently, a tier two target with multiple helicopters.
The problem with ELMO is that he never has had a security strategy. When he set Ovidio free, he set a bad precedent. Even though the cartels have always set fires, etc. when a leader was caught, now they are doing it even when midlevel guys are caught and on a much larger scale and with greater frequency. No other president would have been so foolish as to let a major criminal go. This has only emboldened the criminals.
And the 30,000 homicides per year speak for themselves. When Calderon was president, they thought 10,000 homicides per year was bad. No one dreamed then that Mexico could hit 35,000 homicides in a single year.
Mexico's minimum wage of $11 per day speaks for itself. That's a joke. If ELMO really cared about the poor, Mexico's minimum wage would be much higher. Companies like Hyundai in Tijuana/Tecate paying $18 per day is criminal, and yet ELMO allows it.
Mexico's budget has actually decreased in 2020-2021, so ELMO has had less money to work with. He transfers a few million here and a few million there to fight poverty, but these amounts are only a very tiny fraction of the federal budget.
He promised to tax the rich, but Carlos Slim Helu is still raking in billions while millions of Mexicans struggle to eat meat twice in the same week.
When you read the history books fifty years from now, ELMO will be listed as one of the weakest and most ineffective presidents in the history of Mexico.
The only thing ELMO has done is marginally decreased corruption which is only a continuation of the trend of the last twenty years or so.
I hope he is really putting jamon on your tortas because then you are doing better than millions of other Mexicans who cannot afford jamon.
A minimum wage of $11/day and 30,000 homicides per year after 4 1/2 years in office speak for themselves. ELMO, like Trump, is full of promises and short on action.

    4. @10:40 Detroit
You are very knowledgeable on what is going on in Mexico. I too think Elmo has to be receiving bribes, he has to have set aside when he retires, weather he got it honestly or not. No such thing as an honest president in Mexico.
USA is now watching with Congress members, on how Elmo is handling Fentanyl coming from his Country, yet with a happy face at his daily conferences, he denies fentanyl comes produced from Mexico.
Sure I give him credit for going after drugs labs of CDS, but rarely do we hear of any CJNG labs being raided, talk about favoritism.

    5. "...When you read the history books fifty years from now, ELMO will be listed as one of the weakest and most ineffective presidents in the history of Mexico..."

I beg to differ. Salinas De Gortari already took that title along with, Miguel de la Madrid, Ernesto Zedillo, Vicente Fox, FeCal and El Pendejo de Peña Nieto.

AMLO on the other hand is a true patriot who will go down in the history books right along up there with Benito Juarez and Lazaro Cardenas. Especially if you consider a lot of the infrastructure projects going on in Mexico under this current administration, shadow those of both presidents.

While the thieves before him sold Mexico and its natural resources to the highest and most corrupt foreign bidders, AMLO took a risk and bet on the Pueblo. One thing you can NOT say about AMLO is that he sold out to the gringos.

      Nationalization of Lithium deposits
(Not sold to foreign investors as Salinas did with the minerals)

The purchase of the Deer Park oil refinery in Texas and the modernization of 6 others throughout Mexico including Dos Bocas (built with help of the military to reduce cost).

The Tehuantepec Isthmus railway which will cut travel by four days rather than using the panama canal. Side note, Zedillo privatized Ferromex and the buyers later shut down the Isthmus railway to push exports down south to the Panama Canal. AMLO is reversing that.

The Tren Maya ( built using the military to reduce cost)

Felipe Angeles International Airport. (Built by the military to reduce cost)

As far as low wages, you can blame that on NAFTA. The only ones who benefited from that trade deal were the U.S and Canada and all of those corrupt mexican presidents and politicians.

SEDENA is doing great thanks to AMLO, especially after the Guardia Nacional absorbed the corrupt Policia Federal, increased their staff from 30k to 120k and took over all sea, air and land ports of entry... Ovidio was set free the first time around to save 200 innocent lives. The second time around se la pelo. You can claim that RCQ, Ovidio, el Omega, Lupe Tapia, La Vaca, El Marro, Huevo Trevino, Menchos brother El Montana and Menchos wife La Jefa would've been caught regardless of who was president. Your "would've" holds no weight against the fact of the matter, and the fact of the matter is that they were all caught under AMLO.

Now you can attempt to discredit what I write by saying I get ham on my torta but at the end of the day it's just a weak attempt. Everything I wrote are verifiable facts. Don't believe me? Fact check me.

"...150 hit men detained 26 military elements who were escorting tank trucks, including two officers..."

"...They also surrounded a military housing unit and threatened to execute the families of the soldiers. They even attacked the troops that were going to support..."

From what I remember mentioned there was about 200 military family members in them housing units. Nobody is pulling numbers out of their ass, you just have a hard time accepting the facts, and it's obvious when you resort to name calling. 😅

As far as the minimum wage goes, AMLO raised it 20% during his term. If the minimum wage is raised to your standards or whatever you think is appropriate then inflation will rise as well. You along with the rest of AMLO haters would be crying about your over-priced groceries and why greedy U.S companies decide to take their low paying jobs out of mexico and overseas. It's pretty clear to me, you have a hard time understanding the extreme consequences your unrealistic ideas would have on Mexico/U.S relations.

      https://www.elfinanciero.com.mx/nacional/2022/12/01/es-oficial-salario-minimo-aumentara-20-en-2023-anuncia-amlo/

      https://www.eleconomista.com.mx/politica/AMLO-pension-de-adultos-mayores-crecera-25-en-el-2023-20221017-0158.html

The article above highlights the pension plan for people over 60 and kids and adults with disabilities. It's something like $200 a month which happens to benefit roughly 12million people who qualify and is suppose to increase in the next 2 years. It may not seem like a lot you, but it's a pretty significant amount when you're over here bringing up minimum wage being at $11 a day. I'm sure those $200 will be enough for those 12million chayoteros to include some Jamon in their tortas 3 days a week instead of 2. 😅😉.

So I just mentioned the 20% minimum wage increase, the $200 pension payments, and let's not forget the national projects taking place which create indirect and direct jobs. There is also the 90k increase in national guard personnel which not only helps national security but employment numbers as well. Its hard for me to accept that you want to sit here and talk about, "...ELMO hasn't done shit to fight poverty in Mexico..."🙄 you need to do more research

      Delete
    10. ELMO Chayotero:
They were paying $200 in social security more than 25 years ago. Every president has initiated national projects to gain votes. A 20% increase in the minimum wage in 4 1/2 years doesn't even keep up with inflation that is running 6% per year. The effective minimum wage in Mexico is less now than when ELMO took office so people are actually earning less than when he became president.
ELMO doesn't give a rat's ass about the poor people in Mexico. A minimum wage paying less than what they were paid when he became president and 30,000 homicides per year speak for themselves.
You just don't want to admit the obvious. ELMO has been an absolute failure and disaster as president.
I think you are getting more chorizo from ELMO than Beatriz is getting.

    11. It's funny how you downplay everything that I mention. Even after I list them for you. 12 national road projects, 6 water conservation projects, 12 energy projects, 1 new airport and that's not counting the modernization of several others, 2 train projects, security measures and I didn't even touch on all of the social programs. I mentioned the capture of RCQ, Ovidio, Menchos wife, Menchos brother, El 85, La Vaca, El Omega, Lupe Tapia, Huevo Trevino, El Cazador and a whole bunch of other figures and your response is, "they would've been captured regardless of who was president..." but some how 30k homicides wouldn't of happened under anyone but AMLO. You credit SeDeNa without acknowledging some of the policies and strategies that AMLO has contributed. You claim that somehow I'm in denial but you refuse to accept everything I've listed as credible. 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣. You can call AMLO a failure but if I compare him to you, I can gaurantee he's achieved a lot more and done for Mexico in the last 4 years than you've done in a whole life time. And you guys are around the same age.

They state in this article that ELMO's "authoritarian intolerance for democratic discourse is worrisome". In short, he's another Trump or Putin.
Even the gringo press knows that he is a disaster.

    14. 3:43, Can you think for yourself?
Why would a gringo finance magazine like forbes write hit pieces on AMLO? Maybe because his policies are a threat to foreign investors from the U.S and Canada. If you can read, take a look at the links I provided, one of them also written by forbes. All three articles indicate one thing, AMLO is an economic threat to the U.S. for his plans of financial independence. While the U.S is funding proxy wars against Russia, Mexico is investing in itself and keeping the U.S out of it. So what does the gringo media do? They do everything in their power to label AMLO as a threat to democracy and a failure to his country. Fortunately 68% of the mexican population think he's doing a great job.... I encourage you to read the articles.

They cannot do legal business they have been blacklisted by most American companies…except to 🇨🇳 Chinese money.. the Chinese are exploiting this and paying way less for precious metals and then selling at retail making huge margins..this cartel problem goes way deeper than anyone thinks.. that battery in your Tesla or in your phone the gold and precious metals used in all electronics this is how they start out with blood and death..every great fortune comes from a great crime…

    1. It's a given that the Chinese are involved. Of course they are. It's in their 30 or 40 yr plan, or whatever it is. Big reason for the push to designate cartels as terrorist orgs. Even the dickhead Trump is spouting off about going after them again. Most Americans are oblivious to what is going on. They love to virtue signal...using the electronics and cars, you just stated. The whole country is strung out on drugs, and all we can do is try to sabotage our own Constitution, and give up rights to the same elite devils you've mentioned.
