Reporting on the Mexican Cartel Drug War

Betrayal, DEA and satellite phone led to Chapo Guzman

Borderland Beat

Chapo can thank a satellite phone he  used on Monday that led to his location and capture.  He called a subordinate, requesting help with escaping from Culiacan, where he was hiding in a tunnel.

Based on information from senior officials of the federal government, information originated during  the capture of  Daniel Fernández Domínguez "The Pelacas", arrested on February 12th in Puebla by the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) of the PGR and the Navy.
Fernández (in foto below) the  Auguacalientes plaza chief, was once allied with Los Zetas, before switching and becoming  an ally of Chapo.  Fernández had recently spoken with both Guzman and Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, and had in his procession 20 cell phones had the time of his arrest.
Several of the phones had in their call logs various numbers with area codes of Sinaloa.  Within hours, the Technical Services of the AIC and Naval Intelligence were aware that some of these numbers corresponded to Joel Enrique Romero Sandoval, "El 19", brothers Apolonio El 30" and Cristo Omar "El Cristo", Jesús Andrés Corrales Aztorga "El Bimbo" and  Mario Miguel Pérez Urrea "El Pitaya".
They suspects all belong to the security group of Zambada, led by "El 19."
With this information, the next day the AIC and the Navy stormed the town of Reforma, Sinaloa, where they captured Joel Sandoval and his alleged accomplices.
Corporations of the federal government acquired information using phone data, of addresses, license plates, map links, and restaurants.  They also accessed photographs of the children by using drug trafficker’s social networks.
The arrested  "el 19" group
Two factors were key in reaching “El Chapo":
The first was that one of the members of the group of “el 19” had in one of their cell phones, a cell number, they said, belonged to "El Chapo," leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The other crucial fact was that an informant alerted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) last weekend that "Chapo" and his partner “El Mayo" Zambada would hold a meeting in Culiacan.
One obstacle confronting the PGR and the Navy is that the apparatus used by Guzmán was a satellite phone.  Federal officials said it was at this point the DEA offered technology support, by the use of Geolocators  (device that determines location).
On Monday, the day of the capture of "El 19", the PGR, the Navy and the DEA traced the device.
Thereafter the U.S. accompanied Mexican agencies in the operation.
There was a chance that the capo would dispose rid of his satellite system.
In the initial calls the device was off. But in the passing of the hours, on the same Monday, the cell was activated on during a call. Guzman was asking for help to escape from Culiacán, where he said he was hiding in a tunnel.   His voice was compared to his known voice  and it was positive match.
From that time the Navy almost surrounded the Sinaloa capital.   Guzman’s phone was detected in a home in the Libertad colonia, where upon arriving, AIC agents and the navy discovered  tunnels under the bathtub, that interconnected with the drain system which was exposed because the cover  had slipped.  (this occurred at the home of Chapo’s former wife Griselda “Gris” Lopez Perez at left)
The pursuers determined the phone had activated and extinguished several times during the same day. It was only activated when making calls.
On Monday a signal was detected in Mazatlán.  Federal Government waited a few days to study the activities of the phone and be sure Chapo’s location but also worked to study his security circles, including agents of port municipal police.
"Had we will come straight to the puente on Monday or the day before, all that would have been accomplished is a shootout and his fleeing.  In order to be successful, we had to study their security fences and the police without being detected..
"The surveillance continued all week, he was tracked and his actions defined," said a source involved with operation.  The AIC and the Navy noted that "El Chapo" driving a Cherokee sand color with a armor layer 7, the same as the vehicle of U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
When the Mexican authorities arrived at the Miramar condo building in 608 Avenida del Mar, in Cologne Tellería they quickly subdued Carlos Manuel Hoo Ramírez, one of Guzmán's bodyguards, who directed them to the fourth floor condo, and  they quietly making their way to the fourth floor through the elevators and stairs.
At 6:40 AM the navy entered apartment 401 and overcame Guzman Loera.
“He could not believe that we had reached to him, "said an official.
Note: The following is also reported: Once they were at Guzmán's front door, they broke into the condo and stormed the two rooms it had. In one of the rooms was Guzmán, who was laying in his bed, reportedly with a female companion; he tried to resist arrest and grab an AK-47 he had close to him.
Amid the quarrel with the marines, the drug lord was hit four times. By 06:40 a.m., he was arrested, taken to the ground floor, and walked to the condo's parking lot, where the first photos of his capture were taken.

The phone is more powerful than the gun... All the top guys get taken down by one... You think he would have learned from Pablo, Z40 etc...

Hiding in tunnels and sewers like Saddam, Gaddafi, Rodriguez-Orejuela... The Navy should have worn GoPro's, the look on his face would have gone viral and topped the FAIL compilations.

Didn't he have various rings of protection and what not? Not even any lookouts? And why would you flee to mazatlan with a girl instead of the mountains? If they really raided his exs house wouldn't that set off something in his head saying oh shit its over? I would flee and prepare to battle. But he supposedly fled to mazatlan one of the busiest citys in mexico this week because of the carnaval and relaxing with a female companion! After they were chasing him. Seems waaaaaay too fishy in all honesty. I'm not saying its not him I'm just saying the way they say it went down is suspect.

chapo got stir crazy in the mountains and started living in culiacan full time, showing his face in public full time. EPN could not allow it,chapo broke the agreement to stay in his box and not face arrest. once he moved away from the mountains he was on a downward slope. the green light was given to arrest him. this was only given to the marina,no other elements knew. the politicians who protected chapo were warned by EPN "if you do not want to go down with him keep your mouths shut" they always knew where abouts he was they just needed to narrow it down. chapo thought his satellite phone was untraceable for locations,he knew they could listen to him and only used his phone in emergencies.

Compare earlier versus recent photographs of Chapo & Z-40…

Living a life of murder, mayhem & depravity seems to drastically alter their facial features and they will have to be identified by other methods such as DNA or fingerprints etc. rather than photos.

So glad Chapo is caught, but I wonder how long it will take for him to buy his way out of prison?

Druglords 101 teaches about satellite phones. The tunnels were smart though because Chapo could run or skip through them as the police had to crawl through. A billionaire criminal falls because he was too cheap to invest in a prepaid cell phone to be used only once or similar backup plan. He could have also escaped on foot without any phone or calls. US marshals have no jurisdiction in Mexico, us law enforcement can't even carry guns in Mexico. You will hear more about the gear confiscated in the next couple days.

What happened here: "The other crucial fact was that an informant alerted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) last weekend that "Chapo" and his partner “El Mayo" Zambada would hold a meeting in Culiacan. " So several people get caught except EL Mayo so who tipped them off the person who didn't get caught? " You think EL Mayo" ? Very suspicious.

He thought they wouldn't find him there and didn't want to attract anymore attention with a huge security team. Either way the satellite phone gave away his position and he wouldn't be safe from capture anywhere.

Anonymous said...

A Esparragoza

That guy that has Chapo by the neck is not a Mexican Marine/Semar.Most likely DEA/Navy Seal.El jefe se respeta that was unnecessary.I dont understand why 40 ell Car washer was allowed to walk without handcuffs . This is El senor de la montana .el jefe de la sierra.El 701 .

Could that be. Maybe in exchange for his p%$$y@$$ son in Chicago?

Free El Chapo .

Thats all BS. He was not ever alone and much less in a small dirty ass apartment. All this was obviously a theater set up by someone. Either they had already caught him days before or he just has an accord with the government. No way he had gone out like that...

Anonymous said...

U never will kno. Maybe he got tired of it all and didn't care anymore. He looks sickly and worn down. U would think being n the game for many decades and seen so much death n dealing with the scum of society would get old. Maybe he made a deal to stay n mexican prison and live lavishly in there. At least he doesn't have to crawl through the sewers anymore.

with chapo's arrest, the USA and Mexico are sending a clear message that no one is above the law. A lot of idiots in the US and in Mexico cheer and celebrate these kinds of people partly because the media glorifies them, and partly because many see themselves as having few options to get ahead other than crime. i hope they take note of how these strongmen end up cowering and hiding in their last days.

1. saddam hiding in spider hole in remote village-alone-both sons killed
2. Kaddafi paraded through the streets getting beat down by regular folks after he was found hiding in some hole
3. pablo gunned down on rooftop always in fear, if not for himself, that his family and children would be murdered by los pablos
4. Chapo in a messy apartment (it was nice place though, facing the beach) and running through tunnels...some family including a son murdered
5. El Tio, hiding in a closet behind some teenager
6 Z-40 alone with one bodyguard driving through a desert
7. Osama bin laden living in compound with a few old ladies and never able to show his face for fear of getting it blown off by a drone strike.

Don't believe the hype folks, even at the height of power, your still alone and suffering, unable to trust people, wondering if your friend is going to kill you to take your spot, or fearful that what you do, will get your loved ones (if capable of love) killed. I think the humble farmer or laborer seeing to his family's well being and living a peaceful life is richer than the guy driving a ford 350 and putting his family in danger because working like everyone else is beneath him. He's ungodly and bestial.

If you must live that life of crime, don't bring kids into it, and have some honor by only fighting other soldiers....leave the innocents out of it.

HAHAHA

love it!

Seriously, stupid Mexicans need to smarten up. Currupt government is purposely keeping us ignorant to stay in power. Teachers union is keeping our kids hostage. Serious changes need to be made, Mexico could be a first world country but the greed of a few is always keeping us down.

True, the capture of one of the leaders of a major drug organization will hardly have an impact on the enourmous drug problem in the US. I also think that any real change in the overall situation in Mexico as far as organized crime goes is doubtful based on this one capture alone. There needs to be more done, much more; corruption must be adressed as the threat to national security that it is, the rule of law needs to be applied evenly to EVERYONE, life sentences as well as the death penalty should be handed down as punishments for the worst offenders. All of this would take time of course, but as long as the people dont give up there will always be some hope for a better future. The durg related problems of Mexico and the US are interconnected but they are also different. So this capture doesn't mean much to the average addict but to those who wish for a more peaceful Mexico this capture represents a little bit of hope that things can change if people choose to do the right thing and act.

Didnt chapo and mayo meet up ? For what reason"
Dude, think it was some kind of family thing?I think it may be in here somewhere,an informant said they were meeting and thats why Culiacan got flooded with authorities, and they collared some who led to others and then the phone numbers etc. They nearly had him in Culiacan,he bailed to Mazatlan and kept using a sat phone,he must have thought he was safe in Mazatlan(120 miles)from Culiacan but they were on him.

Yeah, uh not the most fun way to live. Looks like he got complacent. With the woman and child. Kind of like hiding in plain sight. He probably got tired of the grind, always having to hemorrhage cash just 4 a brief instant of protection. If he uses shit to stay awake, thats what really did him in. Being awake all those hours will do funny things to people's brain. The energy needed to operate efficiently , you start to make weird mistakes. He knew the noose was set. It just takes a bit of time till they hang you by your toenails, lol they can wait as long as it takes, patiently while the criminal has to scurry and goes into panic and then its over, justa matter of days whittled down to hours..

Looks like a bad carachiture of a cheap knockoff he doesnt look so intimidating, now he is out in the light. looks like they at least gave him some respect to let him get dressed in an ok getup. All the other guys look like they were caught on the toilet masturbating.
