A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has been sentenced to prison for allowing contraband into the country, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Simon Medina III, 41, pleaded guilty March 8 to his role in a conspiracy to smuggle goods into the United States.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo sentenced Medina to serve 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.

“In handing down the sentence, the court noted Medina was in a position of power and was law enforcement and, as such, more aware of his actions. She highlighted the facts surrounding the severity of the actions and the danger in which he put the community,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

As a then-CBP officer, Medina allowed several individuals to enter the United States with contraband in their vehicles on about 20 occasions between May 25, 2020, and Aug. 6, 2020.

Medina would open a lane and allow his co-conspirators to pass through without inspecting their cargo, although he was not assigned to the entry lanes at the Laredo Port of Entry.

Medina also accepted gratuities from his partners, authorities said. He was permitted to remain on bond and voluntarily surrender to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The Department of Homeland Security-Office of Professional Responsibility and CBP conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney José Angel Moreno prosecuted the case.

With everyone struggling with jobs and rent

    4. Yes, 24 months and the loss of a Federal job is nothing. Chances are high that this man is convincing and will use that noxious trait to come into another job soon after time served.
He and probably a hundred other BP regularly swap tips with the dirty. BP is so corrupt. The USA BP actually had to lower their lie detector test threshold as they needed more workers 5yr back. Now you are allowed to get a % of lies/red flags. The testing is done one time and early followed up. So a clean 19 yr old becomes jaded and disillusioned after 5 years and finally says "fuck it, I have 2 kids and a mortgage". Follow up deception testing is only on paper as a threat.

  2. I'm assuming this CPB officer had some valuable intel to trade because 24 months is a pittance for 1) his sworn oath of responsiblity and 2) making a concerted effort to allow at least 20 vehicles roll into the US dirty.

  3. So potentially letting in terrorists, drugs, criminal immigrants & accepting bribes gets only 2 years? What would an otherwise person get for smuggling those things & offering a bribe to a US official- only 2 fucking years? The USA is corrupt like a mother fucker (no offense, mexico)
