An Organization Falls In Spain That Manufactured Underwater Drones To Transport Drugs

These devices had a compartment to transport the load, and were equipped with GPS to be managed from anywhere.

Three devices were seized, two of them in the manufacturing phase and one practically completed.

Just as the international authorities update their search and investigation methods, in order to avoid drug trafficking, organized crime groups do not rest in their eagerness to move their shipments to different regions.

An example of this is the dismantling of an organization in Spain, which was dedicated to manufacturing submersible drones capable of transporting up to 200 kilograms of drugs.

This was revealed by the National Police, when announcing the capture of eight people in Cádiz, Málaga and Ceuta, who were in charge of the handmade manufacture of these devices.

According to the authorities, this is the first time that this type of submersible that operates without a crew on board, better known as "submarine drones," has been seized.

In total, three devices were seized, two of them in the manufacturing phase and one practically completed, which were to be delivered to French drug traffickers for the transport of large quantities of cocaine.

They also highlighted that it was a network with international contacts and, in fact, one of the drones was intervened when traveling to Denmark on board a crane.

According to the Police, these underwater drones work like a surfboard that travels on the surface of the water and has a compartment to transport the load. They are equipped with GPS to be managed from anywhere, and thus achieve greater precision and organization.

It should be noted that this method of transporting drugs is not exclusive to the European region, since both Colombia and Mexico have also seized narco-submarines.

Last June, elements of the Army found an empty acrylic and fiberglass submarine, in which cocaine was allegedly transported to the Pacific coast, on a beach in the area of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca.

Narcosubmarines have also become a national security problem for the United States since 2020. In the latest report from the Department of Homeland Security, presented to Congress, they reported that the use of submersible and semi-submersible vessels used by drug traffickers has increased.

The six submarines intercepted in the last four years, where 15 Colombians and two Mexicans were arrested, are just the tip of the iceberg of a form of drug transfer that, according to US authorities, is increasing.
