This morning around 11 AM, the son of the Juan Lara Mendoza, mayor of the city of Villagrán, Guanajuato and another woman were attacked and shot while driving. Photos show the unidentified woman red wearing Municipal employee clothing. Witnesses at the scene identified the man shot as Florencio Lara, son of the mayor.
The mayor's son was rushed to the hospital, but according to Periodico Correo, has died. State public security forces as well as Villagrán police secured the area and have begun investigating the scene.
According to reporting by Periodico Correo, neither the mayor nor his family had previously received threats.
Villagrán is one of the most dangerous municipalities in the state of Guanajuato, with 75.9 homicides per capita, over two times the rate of Mexico as a whole. The city is considered a stronghold of the Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima.
This happens just over two weeks following the assassination of Miguel Ángel Noria Huizache, director of municipal services of Villagrán. Huizache was ambushed by gunmen as he returned to his home in mid May.
Months before that in March, the ex mayor of Villagrán, Salvador Acosta Guerrero was assassinated as well.
