Juventino Rosas, Guanajuato: Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel Utilized Water Wells To Dispose of Corpses

Video translation is as follows:

Denise Maerker: And in the municipality of Juventino Rosas in Guanajuato, search groups began to detect bodies that criminals from the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel tried to disappear by throwing them into irrigation wells. Marco Antonio Coronel brings us the details.

Female Searcher: This is a pit here, the thugs use it to get rid of bodies. We have discovered several pits that contain bodies.

Marco Antonio: In the city of Juventino Rosas, Guanajuato, they are finding bodies more than 125 meters deep.

Female Searcher: They put oil on them, oil to make them slide down easier.

Marco Antonio: The first body was found in April in the community of San José de Las Pilas. And there they rescued the remains of 3 people. The second and third wells were found on October 7 in the La Purísima community. From one they took the remains of 6 people. And from the other the remains of 4 more.

Female Searcher: When we take out piece by piece we hope that it is one of our relatives. I never imagined looking for my children like this. And more so in a water well.

Marco Antonio: Rescuing bodies at this depth and with such a small diameter is a very complicated task. That is why the relatives asked the State Search Commission for help. They got ahold of a steel cable more than 150 meters long. They put a hook on the tip. They slid it in and once in the depth they hooked the remains and took them out.

Female Searcher: Right now they are using a pulley. But initially it was being pulled out manually between several people. We were doing the work of about 30 people to remove a single body.

Marco Antonio: After removing the bodies, the members of the search group pray. And before searching the wells they throw holy water on them.

Female Searcher: We use stones and sometimes cement to seal everything off. So that these individuals don’t use them again. So that the holes are no longer used. Because it has already happened to us before. We have removed bodies in the past and they have used the same well again to re-enter bodies.

Marco Antonio: According to a UNAM study, there are more than 1,100 wells in the southwestern region of the Bajío Guanajuatense. Made up of the municipalities of Villagrán and Juventino Rosas. Both considered bastions of the criminal group founded by José Antonio Yepez Ortiz aka El Marró.

Female Searcher: The water is very polluted. But as long as we don't find those bodies and we don't remove them, it will be the same thing.

Marco Antonio: The study highlights that by 2019 the NO3 content increased throughout the region, exceeding the maximum value allowed by the World Health Organization. This data alerted the search group who have focused their efforts to identify more wells with the remains of missing persons. The State Police in Juventino Rosas took charge of security since last month. They fired all the Municipal Police for their alleged links with the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.

Alvar Cabeza de Vaca: This was done so immediately without question. In order to allow them to search the city of Juventino Rosas. This for us sends the message that the police who were there didn’t even allow the search for missing persons.

Mother of disappeared son: We are not looking for who did it, who took them. We are only looking for the missing...
