Six Men Arrested With Firearms & Drugs In Guaymas, Sonora

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

State police and Army soldiers arrested six men in Guaymas, Sonora, with five firearms and 30 packages of drugs.

The Arrest

On October 8, 2021, State Police in the municipality of Guaymas, in the south west area of Sonora state, received a request to aid Army (SEDENA) soldiers who were trying to arrest six people near the town of Professor Graciano Sánchez.

Professor Graciano Sánchez is a town north east of the large city of Guaymas in the municipality of the same name. Strangely few details have been officially released about how the SEDENA soldiers originally encountered the six men they wished to arrest.

Regardless, State Police responded to the request for support by the soldiers and arrived at the location where they then took the six men into custody. The six men have been identified as Mario "N", Jesús "N", Tadeo "N", Miguel "N", Enrique "N" and Axael "N", aged 23, 22, 18, 21, 20 and 18, respectively.

A number of firearms were also seized. Four Ak-47-style firearms and a .223 caliber rifle, along with corresponding ammo and a black GMC pick-up truck.

In addition, 30 bags with narcotics were seized. 15 of the 30 contained meth and the other 15 contained marijuana

The Cartel Landscape of Guaymas

The group which is thought to primarily control Guaymas municipality is La Plaza.

La Plaza is a faction of the Caborca Cartel that is based in Empalme and Guaymas Valley. The leader of La Plaza is believed to be Francisco Javier Espinoza Camacho, alias “El Picipi” or “El Fino”. El Picipi is originally from San Ignacio Rio Muerto and reportedly has connections in Guadalajara, Jalisco as well.

The organization allegedly reports to Juan Pablo and Antonio Quintero Navidad, relatives of Rafael Caro Quintero. It is worth noting that many news publications tie La Plaza to the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generation (CJNG), referring to them as a CJNG group.

There have been a whole series of incidents in Guaymas recently, such as three underage girls kidnapped August 29, the execution of the deputy chief of the Municipal Police on September 7, late night shooting On September 10, and the execution of La Plaza a hitman and fee collector named José Guadalupe Hernández Delgado, alias "El Tepo", around September 11. 1. Guaymas, has long been a great vacation spot from those in he SW states of USA, & N. Mexico. Before violence, I heard once, that you could take your seed there, plant your crops and split the profits. That was long ago, and my memory has certainly faded from those stories I once heard.
