"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

On the afternoon of this Friday, September 10, 2021, a man aboard a white car was shot dead by unknown armed men in south Obregón city, in the municipality of Cajeme, Sonora.

The shooting occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Afrodita street, almost on the corner of Coahuila street, in the Quinta Real neighborhood of Obregón. Police were alerted to the sound of gunfire in the area and officers arrived at the scene to find a white Nissan Versa compact car with a lifeless man sitting inside the vehicle in the driver’s seat.

The attackers had already fled the area by the time police arrived. Sonora Informativo asserts that there is a C5 surveillance camera in the area where the man was shot, therefore the attacker’s vehicle should have been spotted and the police should have apprehended the gunmen behind this shooting.

The deceased 21-year old male showed evidence of at least one gunshot wound to the head. He was found to be clutching an AR-15 style firearm which he presumably was attempting to lift up to use on his attackers to repel their aggression however he was gunned down before he evidently had a chance to return fire.

The deceased was later identified as Pedro Alain ‘DD’, alias “El Pedrito”, a member of the Los Olivas group. Sonora Violento claims that El Pedrito reported to “Pedro Palmyra”, the head of hitmen and a direct subordinate to the leader of Los Olivas Alfredo Olivas Valenzuela, alias “Chapo Alfredo”.

Los Olivas is an organization that is aligned and works under the Caborca Cartel. They primarily operate in the southern regions of Sonora state such as Cajeme, Vacuum and Navojoa. Corridos such as “El Party del Chapo Trini” report that the family has roots in Badiraguato, Sinaloa where many other Sinaloa Cartel kingpins originate. The Olivas family first grew to prominence in the cartel world under the auspices of the Beltrán Leyva brothers who led the Beltrán Leyva Organization (BLO).

Trinidad Olivas Valenzuela alias “Chapo Trini” grew to become the BLO plaza boss for Obregón city, in Cajeme municipality, Sonora. Chapo Trini and the Los Olivas group is believed to be behind the execution of Tomas Tovar Rascon, “Tito Torbellino”, in May 2014. When Chapo Trini was executed in July 2017, his brother Alfredo Olivas Valenzuela, alias “Chapo Alfredo”, is believed to have taken over leading the Los Olivas Organization.

In regards to Chapo Alfredo, he is a well-known drug trafficker who has been directly linked with Rafael Caro Quintero and his nephew El Pablito, In addition to being the father of singer Alfredo Olivas.

His organization began with fee collection (cobra de piso) on owners of video game machines, cigarette vendors, the fees have escalated to affect small merchants and those of the Yaqui tribe. He has been linked to the June 2020 beheading of a businessman and former president of CANACINTRA who refused to pay a fee to the Olivas organization. He reportedly suffered two attempts on his life in 2018 in Zapopan, Jalisco, one occurred outside his home and another occurred in the hospital that he sought treatment in following the first attack.
