Autodefensas Free Nuevo Italia and 3 Additional Communites

Chivis Martínez for Borderland Beat

For about a month autodefensas from El Camalote in the municipality of Coahuayana,  have been attempting to take control away from the Caballeros Tempalrios and finally succeeded on Friday.

Other communities freed from CT are; El Ceñidor, municipality of Parácuaro; and Zapotán, municipality of Coahuayan.

This action was confirmed by the federal police.

About one hour ago, 100 vehicles with autodefensas, arriving from Cuatro Caminos, entered the Apatzingán city of Nuevo Italia and have now control and have freed the city. This under the watchful eyes of the Federal Army guarding the city and surrounding area.

However, Nuevo Italia was not taken peacefully, and some reports indicate additional confrontations are occurring.

Hipolito Mora, head of the organization in La Ruana, belonging to Buenavista Tomatlán said that in the next few hours autodefensas will attempt  to take Uruapan, Los Reyes and Apatzingán
Governor Fausto Vallejo stated instead of containing the autodefenzas that the federal government  "should be done with those who kill and abuse people, e.g. Knights Templar criminal group that takes advantage of the citizens."
In an interview for the newspaper Cambio de Michoacán, Mora said the groups will advance in towns like Uruapan, Los Reyes, Apatzingán and Quiroga, where the inhabitants, he said, sought the help of the leaders of the self-defense..
Some of the other cities freed of organized crime are;  Tomatlán Buenavista, Coalcomán, Hawk, Tepalcatepec, Los Reyes, Chinicuila, Aquila, Paracho, Cheran, La Huacana, Tancítaro, Churumuco, Parácuaro, Coahuayana and a community outside of Apatzingán.

Latest reports indicate Apatzingán is calm at the moment.

Below video of autodefensas coming into Nuevo Italia on four roads intersection:

  3. Its a beautiful thing to hear stories like this.Honestly it gives off an illusion of hope.At the end its very far from reality. So lets say they take out the criminals, there's gonna be a bunch of armed citizens patrolling the street, basically ignoring the government. At the end the government will move in and implement ,restore "control" ,"peace".

  7. You are silly Trey, you are not reading what we are posting. If it was like the US citizens would be attacked and one sit and do nothing

It is ignorant and offensive to the people of Michoacán to say they are like the Blood and Crips. Indigenous groups have the constitutional right to self police, self govern and bear arms. article 2-10-27 and I think 39 gives them that right, and self policing or autodefensas have successfully done so in 10 states where indigenous people live. I have a feeling you may have to look up what indigenous groups mean, but they are the forgotten ones in Mexico, but thankfully they have these rights.

Over 100 years communities have self polices. and in those communities crime is just about non existent. slashing to 5 to 10% of what it was when the local government were in the back pockets of gangs and the feds looked the other way.

I was working in south central during the Watts riots. Police and government forces came in immediately, in fact It was difficult for me to even get out of the city because of blockades were not allowing people out or in. I did not live there just worked there while in college. Even with the lightening quick mobilization of forces, the destruction and terror went on for days and spread to places like Long Beach.

A better analogy than yours would to think of those Watts riots without police. With federal forces. Without protection. with the gangs in total control of every aspect of the lives of citizens. Taking a cut from each persons paycheck, business, taking lives, raping children 9 and 10 years old, impregnating 13 girls ages 11-15 in one neighborhood from gang rapes, forcing children to drop out of school to join the gang, or sex trade, taking whatever they want upon demand, charging taxes to use public highways, and so forth.

and what if no one helped. No police, nothing. Do you think if Watts was in that scenario, the good people would not organize at some point?

You are the funny one Trey, because you can't understand out of your comfort that there is a big world outside the US.

  8. autodefensas get money from contributions and vehicles from ct when freeing cities or conflict aftermath.

last week after a conflict where one autodefensa was killed, and 14 CT killed, many more injured, was because CT tried to retrieve some of the vehicles they lost, they came in guns blazing but to no avail.

autodefensas get communication equipment, guns etc same thing. what they need most is an ambulance and food for the citizens, ct forces closures of roads and stores to isolate people.

go back and read some of the 40 posts and translated videos where it is explained. they make their own armor trucks as well. these are everyday people with many talents, I should post the video of their work on armor vehicles.

  15. I have been reading your posts.
You fellas are doing a fabulous job of direct translations of the news reports.

It is not easy for the uninitiated to comprehend what is happening in the Tierra Caliente. To understand the scope and scale of the auto-defense movement. Partly, I think because of the difficulties in translation, not just the translation of the words, but of the cultural perspectives.

What has been missing from the reporting is punditry. An explanatory description of the social conditions that have led to the Military taking control of the port authority and the rise of the auto-defense movement.

While I have developed a perspective of Doctor Mireles, after reading the interview of Hippo Moras, I am only now coming to grips with the entirety of the situation on the ground.

More appropriate than a comparison to Watts during the late 1960's, what I think we are seeing is, in truth, the development of what we in the US would describe as a militia, in Mich.

What I have been referring to in conversations as ...

    The People's Militia

Am I off base with that comparison, or on target?

Thanks, again, for the fine work you guys at Borderland Beat are doing, bringing this situation forward.

  18. Chivis Great response to the ignorant .... I love it when you get emo!

I too lived in LA during the riots and also went to Harbor Community College and California State University in East LA during that era.

In the context of this post (auto-defense groups) I think this is interesting for our reader to know that where I lived (South Bay area of LA) many citizens were arming themselves to defend their neighborhood in case the "Black" rioters spilled out beyond their Black enclaves of (Compton, Long Beach, Inglewood, etc.)

This was a "people's" movement in my neighborhood, that as far as I know was NOT covered by the press.

The autodefensa "idea" examplified in Michoacan under the leadership of Dr. Mirales' people is inspiring and the kind of thing that (hopefully) be emulated all over Mexico.

P.S. It is somewhat puzzling to me that the Main Stream Media (MSM) in the USA studiously ignores the dramatically significant events in Michoacan. It is the stuff of true peoples' revolution equal to what is going on in other parts of the world.

There must be some awful powerful forces that decide what we peasants should know.

Thank God for Borderland Beat, Chivis and her administrative staff, contributors and colleagues.

  21. As to whether or not the Federals are fearful of he Militias or supportive ..

Who has been targeted, by the Mexican Navy and Marines, in Michoacán?

I would reference this data point from a post made on 5NOV2013

One of Mexico's most important seaports is now under the control of the military in a show of force as the government fights corruption and drug cartel violence. The port of Lazaro Cardenas lies on the country's Pacific coast, in the troubled state of Michoacan.

While violence has tapered off in some parts of Mexico, Michoacan continues to be a hot spot of violence between cartels and, more recently, vigilante groups. The Mexican navy, army, federal police and attorney general's office swept into both the port and city of Lazaro Cardenas on Monday, relieving local law enforcement of its duties, a government spokesman said

  22. I just posted the Amor vehicle video, it is on this post.. also there is a good one of autodefensas on the hunt for CT chief "Tucan" , I will probably post it in a while.

jack :the watts riot analogy was simply to try and approach it from a perspective that the reader could perhaps understand...it was he who offered the crips and bloods scenario. thanks for the support..

to the person called Mexico Watcher. Man o man scary stuff during the riots. I drove the hour to work and noticed there were not so many cars out by the book bindery I worked at 30 hrs a week. and what the heck was all that smoke everywhere. My boss was shocked I came to work, only 3 of us did, he sent me home and I was petrified all the way, because by then the violence was heavy, riot police with bayonet rifles and tear gas, gunshots, looting and the heavy smoke permeated the air in a way that you couldn't escape. People did arm themselves but had no need to organize just self protect.

it lasted about a week and 14000 national guard were sent in addition to riot police of man cities.

in comparison, what CT has done in Apatzingán epn is sending 1500 federal forces. Honestly the feds are spread to thin.

that is why they have a love/hate relationship with the autodefensa. this week two federal chiefs and Michoacán state atty genl actually said autodefensas are doing a good job.

and the des say they investigated deeply to determine if there were criminal organization ties, and found absolutely none.

They also say the groups are at the fringe of legality, I hope to God they stay there. I think they will.

about 50 days ago the government and autodefensas made an agreement and I ASKED Dr. Mireles about the agreement and this was his reply in part:

"In the villages where there is no autodefenzas the army and the Federal are taking possession as a result of an agreement with us.

We will not leave our trenches. That was another agreement.

We are only giving the federal Government those, while we asked to take the cities with more problems."

  25. An interesting distinction of community police and autodefensas. They work together, but in different capacities. I will try to write something explaining this. so it will be easier to understand. Tijuano is confused. So if he is I know many of you are.

in a nutshell. community police guard the communities they live in, it is still proper to refer to them as autodefensas in the bigger context. this is where the law is fuzzy. indigenous groups can form to self police and self government. But only citizens of a certain community is supposed to be able to police their community, and Mireles has been very vocal about their not crossing the line.

outside the communities they can protect themselves against attacks. self defense. but it is confusing where the constitutional right ends, or if it does.

There is talk by the feds to change it so the defensas can go beyond, but I think that would be a mistake.

Doing their duty to protect citizens themselves would be the best scenario, apart from that, working with defensas,

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE- Broley Banderas was said to have died....once again yesterday. I assume that was another false alarm.

I think the guy is having fun "killing" himself every couple of weeks.

  27. Why all this war? the drugs will still be produced and supplied right? it isn't about the drugs or what happens in the US, I assure you that your normal Mexican does not care much about what happens to the US and not because they are assholes, mostly because there is enough going on in Mexico. This war is to keep the communities safe and to stop or reduce the corruption, impunity, kidnappings, assassinations, rapes, etc. Most people commit the mistake of thinking in "American terms" they take things for granted and apply that to any situation around the world; "women are getting raped? why don't they just call 911 and stop this senseless war? we appreciate their sacrifice to keep their drugs out of our streets but they are getting killed in the process! silly Mexicans lol :P" or "those people are hungry? why don't they just apply for welfare like they do here in the USA?" no, in order to understand why these people are doing what they do with what they have is because they are defending themselves, hence; autodefensas! (self defenses) and if possible while at it, they will end up owning what they were supposed to be owners of for centuries. People in the US bang their chests saying how their ancestors came from Europe and how they are home owners, there is a sense of pride and belonging, imagine people who know that their ancestors have probably lived in those lands for 500 years or more and to know that it doesn't matter whose name is in their house and lands title, they do not own nothing (proven by cartels coming and taking what they fucking want and please) so just try to put yourself in their shoes and you'll understand better what goes on in other countries. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a soldier like my uncle when I grew up, now that I am older, I want to be like Zapata and Mireles!
