An Interview with "Broly Banderas" Sicario of Caballeros Templarios

Chivis Martínez Borderland Beat for Texcoco

“Texcoco” a blogger and founder of the popular Narcco Noticas blog, is a long time Borderland Beat contributor.  His blog is fast becoming, the Spanish language, go-to blog for narco news.
One of the readers of Narcco Noticias (A Sangre Fría) conducted an interview with the 'Facebook Loving Sicario'‘ Broly Banderas”.  Banderas’, 24, is a sicario for Caballeros Templarios, his real name is Antonio Olalde.

The list of questions were compiled through Borderland Beat readers and via social networks,  which were sent to Banderas, he then  answered piecemeal and not questions were answered.

Questions included asking about personal information, including how is family feels about his lifestyle choice, what he fears in life, wages and the travesties he has lived as a sicario (hitman).
A number of photographs were sent, and to verify validity,  Banderas has written the name of Texcoco’s blog on his arm, (Narcco Noticias @BlogSpot).  I was given permission to use them clean and I have done so with the exception of those not depicting the blog name and a couple others.  .

INTERVIEW:.

How old are you?

24

Who is your direct boss?

I won't say anything about my boss, but you can ask anything about me

How much do they pay you?

20,000 monthly (apx 1500 USD)

What year and at what age did you commit your first murder?

Murder, I don't know.  My first confrontation happened when I was 20 years old, a few months after I joined the group the Caballeros Templarios.

I've only killed in confrontations.

My first confrontations were with La Familia Michoacana, then on 3 occasions with the Federal Police and  2 more with the military.  The military was by accident, I ran into them and 1 more with the Marina (navy).

Now the problem is with the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion CJNG.

Who makes the decisions of who to kill?

Those questions I will not answer because I give orders as they are given to me. I've never killed in cold blood but I've been present in many executions.

How do you find your victims?

In the same way that they find us, locating and investigating people to find out if they have anything to do with the others.

Have you killed any women?

No we don't do that, only men, killing women is prohibited.

Do you feel sadness for your victims?

I do not like to hurt people that have not done anything to me; I am not a bad person it's just that I am in an ugly line of work. If I told you why I entered this, you would understand.  It was not for the money it was for the women and fame.

I haven't killed. nor would I kill, without reason.

How are your normal days?

My normal days are not usual but they are wonderful because I am a celebrity, like an artist the whole world greets you and they want to take pictures with you the whole world wants to buy you something.
When I go out everybody wants to buy me a bottle, they want to go out with me, they invite me to drink or they want to take photos with me, that's how my days are.

And in regards to the family the least they know the better. They know what I do and all that mess but I don't give them any explanations of where I go and all that, they don't agree with it but they have no choice, I'm already here, they no longer support me.

What does your family think of what you do?

Obviously my family doesn't support me, my father works for the Government, and obviously he doesn't like what I'm doing here, but I live my life and he lives his.  I like my work and what they think does not matter and  the same if they don't like it too well.

How long do you think you're going to be in this line of work?

I don't know how long, I hope many years but I think my days are numbered but however long  I last, it is cool that's why I try to enjoy them as much as possible.

Where did you work before you became a sicario?

I worked in many places, in a candy warehouse, in a bakery and I really never made much money.

What is evil to you?

What is evil to me? Well obviously evil is the distinction between good and bad, that good is going in the right direction, obviously it has nothing to do with what I do. Even though I’m in this, I try to do my best. It’s not bad, just because I have this job. I don't try to take advantage of the people, on the contrary I try to be more unassuming with them.

I would say it is notable, that is why so many people follow me, for the same reason, because  I don't think just because I have this job I feel superior,  to the contrary, whoever extends their hand I will extend mine.

I'm not one of those abusive persons, I am not an asshole with people. To this point I have never beat anyone, there was only one person and that's because the bosses were there, they even loaded it to facebook.

Who or what are you afraid of?

I fear the company, I do fear them, my bosses. well because they can kill me whenever they feel like it, they can tell me to stop by and me without knowing can stop by and well you know... that's why I've always tried to be a good constituent.
I've never had any complaints, I do everything I'm ordered correctly and all that.

But yes it bothers them that I post  things on facebook, I don't comment anything bad, but many are copying my name on facebook and they say things about work even though they don't know anything but they post comments and others  think it’s me.

Like the so called Antonio Olivares who threatened the administrator of “Valor Por Michoacán”, that was some other fool and I have nothing to do with that and they think it’s my name.
Because of them the bosses already threaten me to stop that bullshit or they are going to kill me and they have the power they just tell me to come to whatever place and me without question will go and they will kill me there.

Why did you become a hit man?

Because I wanted to die, back then when I entered this, my life didn't matter, I didn't like the lifestyle that  I had.  Before I was very shy and I could not maintain a good conversation with women but now with facebook the whole world wants to talk to me and it has made me coexist with so many people and so many people that want to chat with me. Before I was very lonely and for me it was very sad and the truth I don't want to be that person again, it was humiliating ugly sad.

It was cool because I was innocent but unfortunately no one pays attention to the little angels, everybody pays attention to the demons in the bad persons and none gives a damn about the good people. Before no one cared about me and now I have all kinds of women and even if they know that I'm with many they still follow me they even fight over me, some come from far away just to spend some time with me, only to have sex with me.

Before it wasn't like this, now I am the worst but that’s what they mostly look for and well I have been adapting.  It’s not like before even though I know that my days are numbered, the government is looking for me and the enemies also looking for me, with everything and well there is no way out of this I cannot go back.

I'd like to get out, but I can't, even if I would leave the Government will continue looking for me, and so would my enemies and they would not care if I left they would just say he is one of them... kill him.
But anyway, it does not matter because I have it really cool, money, women, new trucks what else can I say?

Has it been worth it?

Well it has been worth it because I joined this so they could kill me, so now until they kill me, I have women to pick from, I decide you.. yes and you... no. They give me thousands of gold things, clothes and many other things.

I have seen how many high ranking officials pay to have sex with woman, not me, they do things for me and they treat me well ,so that I will be with them, for I am superior then any dumbass who says things about me, so whenever they start to criticize me I laugh, because they  are dying  of envy.
I entered this to die and now I want to live but it doesn't matter all I ask is that I die in combat, I don't want to die like a dog, it is better to die  in combat like the warrior I am.

And it has been worth it.  Now a days they steal my photos and they make accounts on facebook saying they are me, fucken dogs, guys, don't say I'm you, look for your own fame.

How did you get into the business?

I am not going to talk about that

What were the circumstances of your first murder?

I don't do that, I am not a cold blooded killer, when you have to kill someone by orders or for whatever reason, I give someone else the order to do it, in clashes yes, there  I'll do it, I even like to show off.

What do you think of your fame on the internet?
The truth is, that I like when they talk about me, I'd be lying if I told you no, and the truth is,  it’s cool when someone wants to take a photos with me and I am really very humble, I greet who ever greets me and I'll shake anyone's hand.

How many people have you tortured?

Only one, that person from a photo that went up on facebook but I really don't do that, I don't like that.

How many days off you get per week?

2 per week, anywhere else they just give you one, here they give you 2

Have you saved your money, or what do you do with all that?

No, because I give most of it to my wife and she is a big spender, like all women, you know and me well I buy my things, I like to dress well and all that shit and I spend it on that.  And in things for the ladies,  really small things, because they are not interested in my money, stuff like small stuffed animals and things like that.
How long did it take you to become fully competent as a Sicario?

I don't know when I entered, it had only been like 5 months when that thing with La Familia happened and I fought and that’s how it happened.

Describes one or two situations that are the most exciting for you?

Exiting...well I don't know what.

What the women write on my facebook is exciting, and the types of animals that I see in the wild, I love nature, it’s exciting when I see the stars fall into the night while I am in the mountains, seeing falling meteorites.

  2. Hi Chivis,
I haven't read the interview yet but I was interested in what you wrote at the beginning about the photos. The ones with the writing on his arm, he sent those to that blog and wrote on his arm to verify that they were taken for the purposes of that blog's interview?
And what's the forensic software you used? What does it do?
I'll read the interview and probably have more to say/ask you. Thanks for doing this article. I really like reading interviews with narcos. They need more with Z40 and Osiel Cardenas, and fewer with La Tuta, but during this time I think it's valuable to hear from some of the Templars (other than La Tuta).

  5. K I've read the interview now. The Templars definitely have a flavour for playing themselves up as the good guys, and from what he says about women loving him and people wanting to hang out with him, it seems like the people around him are either really easily manipulated or just love the prospect of his buying them stuff. I've heard people mention this on BB before and I agree that this is a big driving problem behind cartels' power: regular citizens are easily bought, and narcos know exactly how to do it. I can tell you that where I'm from, this doesn't exist. Criminals are NOT idolized, and women don't tend to forsake their morals to be with a guy just because he'll treat them like a princess.
This, and the fact that Broly and the rest of the CT show utter disrespect to their victims by denying that their motives are evil, makes me more than a little angry.
This same phenomenon exists among many of the young women I know in Guadalajara: they have no problem admitting that they would rather marry a rich cartel member than a poor honest man, and that their parents (and their gossiping aunts) would rather they do this too. The real problem here is that this drives guys like Broly who have no conscience to tell them to do otherwise, to get into a lifestyle like this.
Another thing I'm interested in here is how he says his days are numbered. I wonder how many other sicarios feel the same way, assuming that they're going to die soon. Maybe most? Regardless of what they've done, I do feel badly for anyone whose life is bad enough that they "want to die" as he said.
I'm hoping for a future generation of Mexicans who don't feel compelled to follow the path that Broly has, and can live a life that shows their better side.

    1. Actually most mexicans don't want to follow brolys path, which is why the autodefensas are actually in great numbers amongst the youth. I know plenty of Mexicans (not mexican americans) that dont focus on the cartels and actually dispise them and percieve those in the cartels as lazy. I know plenty of people like this. I live near the border so thats how i know:)

    2. I agree with you- I hope our youth can achieve power without violence. I wish Mexicans wouldn't kill eachother- we have enough hate from others. Power comes with unity and we are one familia. It makes me sad to think this young man will probably die before he reaches thirty. I don't believe that everyone in the lifestyle is evil. I believe people do things out of desperation. Poverty is evil. I hope Broly knows the stars are free.

  19. I read this with a kind of hopeful analysis of human paramilitary action from a front line player but all I really "got" was a kind of horrifying emptiness. He Tries to play a little on our sympathies by talking about his poverty, like a poor guy who's chosen the evil "path to riches" - yet who still wants to try to be "not as bad as the rest", everything he describes screams out to me shallow, superficial, narcissistic (as above) but then again, he'd have to be a complete knobhead to go into any real depth about what he does. As for the sentimental crap he sputs, a lot of people are like that so I can't really hold that against him but romanticizing his work, his bosses? He just comes across as lonely inside, and insecure. BTW sorry to be a pain, but Chivis, what is ELN please? Just curious - not "educationally sub-normal", surely?

  24. This interview confirms what a lot of young dudes believe about cartel life: money, women and fame. When you are young you tend to look at the upsides (its called being naiive, but it is a perfectly normal attribute of youth). The cartels bosses are very clever in exploiting this naiivitiy to get new recruits.
The sad truth is though, that the positive alternatives for him and millions of other youth in this world are very few between. I think that this is the real cause for organized crime anywhere and everywhere in the world.

  31. What it comes down to is the " rather live a few years as a king than a lifetime of being poor " mentality. In Mexico and in so many other parts of the world. People get misguided and sometimes its the circumstances of what life deals you but there should always be a choice to make the right decisions and choices after your mistakes. I can't comprehend how someone prefers to live a lifestyle like that knowing their days are numbered. The only conclusion is that a takes a very selfish person to accept the fact and embrace it. The only people that will suffer after this person ceases to exist in such a short span with be his family.

    1. if the fotos had been used before. and 2. If they had been shopped or altered. I took 5 in total including the one you speak of. they were clean and unpublished with no images visually similar to their standard of similar. and the ELN and other forensic came back clean.

I took the info down because I did not want the discussion to be about fotos, and I was confidant in the processes I used. Texcoco is a friend and there was additional info he sent to me that will never see the light of day. I am satisfied. Readers can take it or leave it.

Well... he's kinda right on that. Not trying to justify him being a sicario, but it's true people, and especially women, don't give a fuck about "good" guys.

Also, i'm pretty sure he's lying when he says they pay him a lot. In fact, i'm pretty sure he's forced to say that. Of course, what if a young boy -willing to join a cartel- read this article and learnt that being a sicario doesn't pay so well ? So that's why I think he's lying there. Cartels are simply trying to keep the fantasy of their "dream life" alive. He has trucks, jewelery, women ? Well, let him prove it. Until then : he's a liar.

I know him and i can guarantee that he has been as truthful as i he could under these unfortunate circumstances ,he is REALLY this way if not even more candid you people have absolutely NO IDEA of what y'all talking about. this is an accurate document take it or leave it but don't even dare to be factual talking all big with your mouth like you guys know him like the palm of your hand.He wasn't looking for any sympathy he never played that card in his whole life eventhough he could im not here giving out his dramatic lifestory to u fools but i know for a fact that none of you guys would have made this far after all the tragedies and humiliations he went tru.Antonio he is not the stereotypical sicario there is nothing typical about him and the comparison with mr Gamboa is totally uncalled for, laughable i will say.He doesnt try to portray any image out there if that was the case he would have worded things differently he knew damn well that you bunch of zombies are not his diary but still he gave y'all a glimpse into his life naively thinking some of you could have understood where he's coming from(Im not saying condoning or give him a round of applause simply sort of understanding his viewpoint not look at him like an animal at the zoo he likes to talk to people because deep rooted issues the ''narcisism'' you intellectuals are quick to diagnose go back in time and its nothing like u assume not evenclose) so bow down and thank him for the utmost sincerity and if its too much for you give credit where credit is due to a guy like Antonio just shut up and move on.He's the realest person i 've met in years he helped me out without ulterior motives and im not the only one hes superkind to everybody regardless of the gender and actually my biggest is fear has Always been the fact that i never see him been able to fully defend himself from people both mentally and phisicallywise.I could say more but his story is not meant to be sold and he doesnt need a lawyer to defend him by a few idiots with a narco fetish because he truly got his heart in the right place thats why he constantly fears for his life hes hardly tolerated because he so different and when i say different i mean from the majority of people not only gente del negocio. On a final note (and i apologize because english is not my original Language) i would like to ask you guys something,do you really think that a 24.y,o mexican guy who unlike what you think, hes perfectly aware of the fact what he hasnt much and states that he wanted to die but now that he got a lil bit of affection & gratification(even if its obviously the this the deadliest way to seek it) wants to live hes trying to portray a character to you??i mean ,really?he risked a lot opening u 2 the guy leave him alone then again you have no idea what hes about it,only becayse u read a narcoblog and know 2 things more than the clueless nextperson doesnt give you the pass to really think u know whats going on these people lives especially when u have zero proofs like in antonio case washyour mouth with the acido before throwing baseless accusations like ''he killed innocent pple for a few dollars'' no he doesnt never did and he will die just cause he will never do such a thing his bossess know that well and aint tripping 4 2 motives they need pple and the killer place is never vacant so if doesnt someonelse will thats why his salary itsNT higher cause hes not what u think! u people are so patethic spitting ur venom on such an easy target,a guy with obvious behavioural issues but ultra sincere, real humble and with a heart of gold,im not trying to deprive you from anything but he will never be forgotten he will stay safe in the hearts of the people who really knew him,y all nothing but bitter pussies revolving around a world where ur dumb rearback would be dead in notime because the lack of insight, intelligence and strategy. keep up the gossiping and ride from a distance bitches.enjoy

  52. I once commented that this Broly Banderas would be perfect for the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean if it weren't for the fact that he is a real life pirate! With the lack of economical and educational opportunities in Mexico, I could see how a person might choose the path of organized crime. The low wages in Mexico don't help either. Some people want instant gratification and immediate wealth instead of working hard and being patient, as in the case of Broly. In Mexico, $1500 goes a longer way than hear in the U.S.A. The despair of lack of opportunities is evident in Broly's words when he states "he joined because he wanted to die". Mind you a person might join a criminal organization in the hopes of bettering their economic situation -- which, believe it or not, can happen in organized crime as a cartel member might move the structure of the criminal organization. If a mafia member manages to stay alive, avoids arrest, and learns the enterprises of crime, that person can become wealthy. That is evident in the houses, cars, and furniture that ADs have confiscated from the CT plaza bosses recently in Tierra Caliente. That is also evident in the legitimate businesses these guys start with the money the earn from drug trafficking, extortion, and looting of industries. However, this does not excuse the killing of unarmed protesters, raping of girls/women, and kidnapping. Broly might have participated in the cowardly act of killing unarmed protesters during this recent uprising of Tierra Caliente against CT last year. Although I can feel sympathy for the reasons why people might join organized crime, I can not feel sympathy for people who murder innocent men, women, and children. Broly should know that their is a better way while their is still time.

  53. My analysis of this interview.

Broly couldn't get laid to save his life so he joined LCT. He mentions women around 4 time during his interview. I know 20 year olds that work at McDonalds who make more money than this clown.

  59. This is what you get when you find someone without an education, or any ambition. He talks like he has the mind of a child. He obviously needs someone to control him and tell him what to do at the age of 24. People like this should have not even be born. But obviously a mistake was made. Give him a gun and facebook page and he can impress all the other young poor girls that obviously have nothing to look forward to also. He could not get a real woman, because a smart and intelligent woman would not even think twice before entertaining someone like him. He is in his own little world, and somehow he thinks he is important. He is only being used, so he is not important to anyone. There are many others to replace him. No one will even think twice about him when he is gone.

  60. I think the interview is really humanizing for Broly. And you can't help but like him, but it's really hard to get around his line of work. I can understand the lure of cartel work - good money, lots of women, etc... but killing innocent people is not the way.

  63. I can see his logic somewhat with the whole "rather live like a king for a few years than be poor for a lifetime" that's all well and good but if that means hurting and killing others who are mostly innocent people then NO. Its wrong and his day will come. Just a matter of time. As much as people like to look at this guy as some sort of rebel bad ass who's life is filled with exitement at the end of the day he's just a scumbag murderer thief who is nothing without his guns.

Lets see how up himself and arrogant he acts when he is starring in his own execution video from los Zetas.

Actually, nope you are wrong about Mexico idolizing gangs/cartels. It's actually the Mexican-Americans or the media that appeals to them that glorify these criminals. All of the narco corridos, narco-movies and narco novelas are targeted towards the American audience of Mexican ancestry. Nobody in Mexico hears that crap music except for narcos. It's not a thing in Mexico and not even remotely popular among the younger crowd. Mexican despise cartel members and you will quickly get otraziced if you affilate or hang around cartel a members. It's like blaming the American glorification of Lucky Lucciano and the mob on Italy. Actual italians just like mexicans hate the mafias/cartels.

Remember that even though those 1500 dollars might seem meagre for your american economy due to the conversion from mexican pesos to dollars and the peso devaluation(for of political purposes only), here in México they are the equivalent of having 15000 dollars in your country because of the adquisitive power the mexican peso has within our own country, you can buy a lot of good stuff.

I mean comparing this guy to Chino is not really fare I mean Chino was the head of the entire Antrax faction and was a liason for international drug shipments this guy just gives orders to sicarios. He was cool when we talked my cousin was on his friends list so I was asking him about if he knew the location of him and he was real cool with me. Idk I mean killing isn't that big of a deal it doesn't take much especially in a confrontation you just shoot who is shooting at you and the adrenaline makes it even more not real.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Everyone is talking out of their ass! Not every man is a cold blooded face to face killer. That's why some men make tier 1 snipers because its not real to them when they pull a trigger half a mile away and just see a human shaped figure collapse it is nowhere near as psychological impairing as face to face murder. That's why there is infantry who do "confrontations" and only kill in high adrenaline fire to fire situations because even if they don't like to or want to kill it is human nature to preserve your life and you WILL shoot back at that aggressor 90% of the time. Then you have Tier 1 special forces DEVGRU type servicemen who are completely separated from emotion and can without effort flip a switch from cuddling with toddlers and puppys to sneaking into a village slashing someones throat and severing the spinal cord to prevent the slurring sound of blood filled lungs and shooting men twice in the chest once in the head then twice more directly into the heart to guarantee death remove the bullets, bag the bodies then go back to base take a shower and play online chess. No man is proficient in everything and unless you have been in a combat situation you don't have the right to judge him. It takes far more balls to fight in a clash than to kidnap someone and cut off their head. When you have the element of surprise their is no danger.

  96. Everybody out there with that "Work hard and you will achieve success" mentality commenting here is an idiot who thinks the world is like the USA. Just because Mexico borders us, doesn't mean they are anything like us.

In Mexico, you are living in a virtual police state where most everybody is living in poverty. The government likes this, as it makes people much easier to control, but it also helps the cartels recruit, which is a potential problem. But it beats the hell out of allowing the Mexican people to do good for themselves. There is almost no real educational system in Mexico, as educated people who can actually think for themselves are dangerous. Unlike the US, if you are poor in Mexico, you and your family stays poor forever, there is no hope of advancement whatsoever. This is how most of the world works.

Americans believe that their values apply everywhere and people who don't follow them are "evil" or "lazy". These people are idiots, like the idiots who led us into Afghanistan or Iraq with the same mentality, as the USA is not the world in any sense, even though some of our politicians like to make us think that. The poorer a society is, the more violent it will be. In Mexico, life is cheap and everybody knows it, whereas Americans are comfortable, so they'll see life as precious. These guys "live for the moment" because they know the end will come someday, which is realistic.

Honestly, I believe it is the US and the West in general that it warped in its thinking. We've become so comfortable in our way of life that it's unnatural. For a small, safe taste of Mexico, hang around the worst of South Central L.A. and see the difference compared to the suburbs. When people live in poverty and know that it is the government that is helping keep them there for social control, gang/cartel life becomes appealing and romantic, as you get the added bonus of "fighting the Man" too.

  97. This interview is really sad. Sounds like he had a lonely life as a kid (same as me - I think as a kid, I even toyed with the idea of becoming a bounty hunter!). But this guy clearly didn't have the opportunities that I had (I live in London, UK) and went down the wrong path (but perhaps the only path that made any sense to him). I feel really sad for the guy... and a little thankful that I was lucky enough to be born in a place where there are opportunities to turn your life around. I hope this guy stops hurting people and finds something fun *and* constructive to do with his life. But I know that this is an unrealistic expectation, and he's going to end up dead sooner than later.
