Texas Dept. of Public Safety issues Nuevo Laredo travel advisory

Mexican authorities doubt DPS warning about holiday travel to Nuevo Laredo

McALLEN -- A warning issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety claiming that the Zetas will target American citizens traveling to Nuevo Laredo over the holiday weekend raised the eyebrows of Mexican law enforcement officials who said they hadn’t heard that news.

The DPS issued a news release Saturday morning stating that they and the Webb County Sheriff’s office were warning travelers to avoid going to Nuevo Laredo because of a possible surge in criminal activity such as robberies, extortions, car-jackings and vehicle thefts targeting U.S citizens.

The release stated that the information came from credible intelligence gathered by multiple sources and claimed that the Zetas would carry out the activities over the Fourth of July weekend.

In Tamaulipas, the state where Nuevo Laredo is located and that borders with Laredo, Texas, a state law enforcement official not authorized to speak to the media said this team had not been notified by DPS of the release nor had they received any information corroborating the statement.

“El for de que?” the official, who added his team is in touch with U.S. officials at all levels of government, said in Spanish. “We have nothing like that. We have the violent events that have become commonplace, but we have nothing that says Americans are a target. If you are in bad steps, you will get what’s coming. But they are not going to come after you only because you are from that side of the river.”

The official said civilians have been caught in the crossfire before and carjacked. But according to their investigations, the victimes were either at the wrong place at the wrong time or were in “bad steps,” he said, referring to criminal activity.

A member of the U.S. intelligence community said the threat to civilians in the northeast part of Mexico is a permanent fact that is not particular to one city or one time frame. It doesn’t get better or worse, and violent incidents can’t be predicted, he said.

In the past, DPS has issued similar warnings that didn’t pan out.

The most publicized came in early 2010, when the agency issued a statement to other law enforcement agencies saying it had unconfirmed information that the Zetas planned to blow up Falcon Dam. Authorities beefed up patrol, but the attack did not occur. In June 2010, media outlets found out about the slip-up and publicized it.

In May 2010, DPS sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies warning them of a flier allegedly found in Brownsville that claimed that the weekend of May 15-17 would be the “most violent weekend in Mexican history” because two rival gangs planned to do battle.

Law enforcement efforts in Cameron County were beefed up, but no battle occurred. The message described by DPS had appeared before in various forms. Valley Freedom Newspapers received exact copies of the flier on April 28, March 24 and March 4 of that year, but no firefights occurred.

  4. The days of crossing the bridge to eat at the Cadillac bar & Grill, having drinks at Don Pedros, strolling tru the Mercado, pharmacy shopping for perscription drugs and spending the day smelling the stink in the air of our neighbors is over. You will see "Police" if you cross however they are really cartel. The real police were chased out of town and are to Chicken shit to return and defend the town.
ASfter dark the streets are empty and are patrolled by luxury trucks and SUVs that were stolen from hard working Americans from Texas.
Nuevo Larado and every single Mexican town along the Texas -Mexico is run by Thugs and common criminals and that exact sinero is played out every day in every northern Mexico town. The D.P.S warning is very real and All Americans should take thier advise and stay out of that miserable place. Cross tha Border and you are likely to die a very bad death or at the very least have the shit scared out of you and your family. Have a good 4th right here in the great U.S.A!!

  9. Today in Matamoros there were various gunfights and blockades all around town, a well known and loved catholic priest was caught in the crossfire and was shot various times. He was rushed to the hospital but died of his wounds. R.I.P. Father Marcos. This is a huge loss for the citizens of Matamoros.

  15. If ur dumb enough to travel to nuevo laredo maybe you deserve to be kidnapped. I realize the beer is a little cheaper but come on. How good can the night club seen be if everyone is afraid to go out at night? If I want a thrill, ill go skydiving. But if that isn't dangerous enough, just drive down in a new four door pickup and cruise around town.

  17. Does no-one have spell check on their computers anymore? I can't even read these comments. They drive me crazy! I'm not saying that they need to be perfect by any means but SOME effort would be advisable.

  18. In April I was coming back from Monterrey from my Cousins wedding back to San Antonio. I was traveling by bus, Turimex to be exact and we were stopped on the highway right outside of Nvo. Laredo by a reten. The driver pulled over and turned off the bus everyone including me was scarred shitless. This was not la aduana we had already passed it. It was about 3:00 in the morning. Three guys carrying machine guns boarded the bus. The had shirts that said " policia de Nuevo Laredo" on them they got in and went to the back of the bus. I still don't know what they did or what/ who they were looking for. Then they just left. I almost shit my pants I thought that that was the end for me. I've traveled back and forth for years to visit my family who still reside in Monterrey. I havent gone back since. If I do go I will fly but it's way more expensive to do that. Im pretty sure these guys were narcos. Which ones? I don't know and I don't care. Later the bus driver told me that they stop busses and force them to put drugs in them. If they don't they will shoot them on the spot. Scary scary stuff.

Not only do many of the posters on here not use spell check, but they also get mixed up on basic grammar such as not knowing the difference between there, their, to, two, too, than, then, threw, through, here, hear and the list goes on and on...

  23. So someone (Zetas, quien sabe) starts spouting off about how they are going to blow up Falcon Dam, the government puts extra security in place and the threat never materializes. Then the media, the MEDIA???? gets a hold of it and thinks there's a story there??? Security is a cat and mouse game. I'm sure these same media idiots would be screaming if someone actually did blow up the dam or an American was actually targeted in Nuevo Laredo.

Will you get kidnapped in Nuevo Laredo? Maybe, maybe not, but these warnings are meant to alert you to a mentionable level of risk. If you don't think that level of risk exists, by all means go to Nuevo Laredo. Darwinism will take care of the rest.

  24. Mexico is finished. The country (and the people) lack the ability to rescue themselves from this predicament. Just animals down there. Trash. Thanks

Im glad someone said it. Kept me from having to type it.

The La RAZA's in the media are beating up the Gov. and all of our politicians and police every time they take an action against the cause of these infiltrators.

They are LA RAZA's trying to push their cause.

They want to take over America silently while shaming us into inaction.

    Will we let this happen?
