Zetas Founding Member 'Don Zefe' Killed; He Also Resided in US & Canada

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

Zeferino Pena Cuellar, alias Don Zefe or El Zefe, key figure in the creation of Los Zetas, was killed this week in Nuevo Leon

Nuevo León state authorities confirmed that Zeferino Peña Cuéllar, commonly known by his alias "Don Zefe," was killed in a shootout with police officers at his estate in Santiago, Nuevo León. Don Zefe was affiliated with the Gulf Cartel during the 1990s and early 2000s and is often cited as one of the founding members of the core group that later evolved into Los Zetas under the leadership of kingpin Osiel Cárdenas Guillén. However, Don Zefe largely avoided law enforcement scrutiny and media coverage over the years up until his death and was believed to have retired for several years.

The incident occurred early in the afternoon on Tuesday, December 23, when the State Investigative Agency (AEI) reported the presence of armed men near an estate in Santiago. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities came under gunfire, resulting in a shootout.

Two men were killed during the exchange, and local media quickly reported that one of them was Don Zefe. The other victim was David Calderón, a former military officer. Investigators later confirmed that Don Zefe was suspected of managing drug trafficking operations in Nuevo Leon, reportedly under a new criminal organization he was attempting to establish in the area.

Sources consulted by Borderland Beat indicated that Don Zefe had been spending a considerable amount of time in Nuevo León since the pandemic. His activities remained largely unknown for years because he had retired for an extended period. Upon emerging from retirement, he maintained a low profile while attempting to form a new criminal organization, possibly operating as an independent drug trafficker.

JULY 19, 2025

On Monday, July 14, 2025, several banners were hung in strategic points in Culiacan, Sinaloa, in which La Chapiza/ Los Chapitos/ Family Guzman claimed responsibility. The banners were dedicated to the turncoats who were once  Los Chapitos or La Chapiza key members and decided to join the Los Mayos-Guasave Cartel alliance. The banners were placed at points of high vehicle traffic, like Avenue 68 in Culiacan, on top of the bridge located in Malecon Viejo, to name a few.

Needless to say, the Los Chapitos/ La Chapiza lost key members who decided to join the La Mayiza-Guasave Cartel alliance. Fuerzas Especiales Avendaño were key in the fight against Los Mayos/MF in the city of Culiacan, but opted to desert from the Los Chapitos organization to join the Fausto Isidro Meza Flores "Chapo Isidro" organization. Same with the cousins El Koyote and El Yuko, both powerful criminal figures in the Mocorito area who supported the Los Chapitos, also deserted. Saul Paez Lopez, who was considered a key member of the Ovidio Guzman Lopez faction (Mr. Saul, cousin of Ovidio), who was baptised by Joaquin Guzman Loera and Griselda Lopez Perez, also deserted.

Both Ricardo Paez Lopez and Saul are brothers who were indicted in July 2023 for running an illicit fentanyl network for the Los Chapitos Cartel.

El Armadillo for Borderland Beat

In early February, during a party in Tijuana, 26 year old Jesús Sebastián Moreno Olivas - known as "El Sebas" or "El Cebollas" (The Onion) - was fatally shot, police found 30 shell casings at the scene. In the weeks following the incident, several images related to El Cebollas circulated on social media.

Was One of Europe's Most Wanted Drug Traffickers, Marco Ebben, Killed in a Culiacan Shootout?

"Socalj" & "HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Marco Ebben, one of the most wanted men in the Netherlands, had reportedly joined up with the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico after fleeing a shooting earlier this year in Turkey. In recent years, Ebben had lived in Dubai, Spain, Russia, and Italy, in addition to Turkey and, finally, Mexico.

The Schiedam-born criminal Marco Ebben is said to have died in cartel violence in Mexico. This has been reported by various sources, but none officially yet. Ebben was reportedly seen bleeding after a shootout between rival Sinaloa Cartel factions La Mayiza/MF and Los Chapitos in September. This recent battle in Sinaloa is only a small part of the internal war in the region with reportedly over 300 killings and untold numbers of kidnappings having taken place in the last 2 months, with 81 arrests having occurred so far.

Two CBP Agents in San Diego Arrested for Working with Mexican Cartel

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat
With Contributions from "HEARST"

From a San Diego Tribune Article by Alex Riggens

Before their arrests in May of this year, two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers appeared to be living large, according to prosecutors.

One had dropped thousands of dollars on luxury items from Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Burberry, owned a stake in a horse racing stable and was building a large home on a Mexican ranch.

The other had taken multiple European vacations and was about to attend a pricey boxing match in Las Vegas when he was arrested.

Prosecutors allege that it wasn’t their federal government salaries funding those lavish lifestyles. Instead, Jesse Clark Garcia and Diego Bonillo are accused of working for an unnamed Mexican drug trafficking organization to allow vehicles loaded with fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine to pass unchecked through their inspection lanes at the Otay Mesa and Tecate ports of entry.

The LeBaron Massacre and the G3 Factor

 By Buggs for Borderland Beat

Note: I am going to revisit the events of the LeBaron massacre that occurred in 2019 in Sonora and the background on how it happened. A lot of the details in the information were never made public. I chose not to post this information back then because it would have put some people at risk. But things have changed since then as most of the principals have either been killed or arrested. Be aware that most of the information in this story was told to me by sources that were in positions to know, but also it has not been collaborated or confirmed.

On November 4, 2019, at about 4:40am my phone started ringing with pending messages. I was asleep and initially, I ignored the messages but then decided to check them. The messages were from a source out of Sonora that I had been talking to about the war between Los Cazadores and the Caborca cartel. This source was based out of Altar, Sonora and was one of the Lugar Tenientes (Lieutenants) of Jesús Humberto Limón López, "El Noveno" or "El Cazador." He had told me that he, along with three other men, had been sent to the US border town of Agua Prieta (AP) to monitor the situation. There had been some internal war in AP between two cells that had been operating there on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS). Things had calmed down when he was sent there but both factions were providing conflicting information as to what was actually happening in AP. My source was told not to intervene or get involved by taking sides but just monitor the situation and report back.

In the message he told me several trucks had entered AP around 3:30AM and got into a shootout with some of the people of Los Paredes/Los Salazar. He told me he thought it might be the Caborca cartel of Los Quinteros. He told me 4 men of the Los Paredes/Los Salazar were killed, but the Mexican authorities later reported that 2 sicarios were killed and some were injured. There was no sign of police or military presence during the shootout. Many people could see the trucks and hear the sounds of gunfire that disrupted the silence of the night.

The Mysterious Flight of El Mayo & Joaquin, What We Know and Don't Know

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

With Contributions from "HEARST" "Enojon" & "Some Dude"

Three days after the arrests of "El Mayo" and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, some details remain murky. While the most unanswered question is if Mayo came into the hands of US authorities willingly or if he was setup or kidnapped still remains unclear. Also unclear is the location that the pair of Sinaloa cartel figures took off in the plane from before landing in New Mexico at the airport in Santa Teresa, just outside of El Paso, Texas.

This has further been confused with statements made the following morning by the Mexican Security Minister and President AMLO, which contradicts local news and witness reports. As well as new footage obtained by Borderland Beat of the plane that the pair arrived on.

The Life and Death of Cheyo Antrax, Mayo's Nephew & The Ban on Sharing Images of His Murder

"HEARST" and "Enojon" for Borderland Beat

Sinaloa Cartel figure Eliseo Imperial Castro, alias “Cheyo Antrax”, was killed in Culiacan - in a city which the cartel group entirely controls, which means someone from the Sinaloa Cartel had Cheyo Antrax killed.

So was it a Sinaloa Cartel faction which works under rivals like Guano or Chapitos? Or was Cheyo’s own Mayo faction involved in his murder?

And why is the Sinaloa Cartel trying to prevent pictures of Cheyo’s murder from being shared online?

Warning: Some graphic images below this point.

Sinaloa Cartel's La Rana Linked to Murder of the Surfers and Other New Information

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

The Attorney General's Office (FGE) has found that “La Rana”, from the Sinaloa Cartel - Mayo faction, controls the region where the three surfers were killed and he is likely using it to unload drug shipments from South America.

La Rana and his brother Aquiles are also known to control the drug dealing in El Maneadero, where one of the perpetrators was found with a dealer-level of meth.

So no matter how you slice it - it comes back to La Rana and El Aquiles.

The Daily Beast published Sinaloa Cartel propaganda which alleges 5 the cartel group found and turned in the people who murdered the surfers.

The Daily Beast ran the allegation as the article's headline despite there the claim being so implausible that it borders on being outright false.

Note: This is a continuation of a story published last week. Please read the previous story which covers the murder of three surfers in Ensenada, linked here.

Three Surfers Camping in Baja California Were Executed, Mexico Claims Case is Atypical, Denies Cartels Were Involved

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Three surfers - two from Australia and one from the US - went on a road trip from San Diego into Mexico, planning to hit up all the prime surf beaches in Baja California.

A few days into their trip, the surfers went missing after a night of camping on the beach. Authorities found their camp abandoned, with blood stains and a tooth showing a struggle had occurred.

Three Mexican citizens have been arrested in connection with the case and three dead bodies which are likely the surfers have been found.

This week Mexican authorities have been insisting the murder of the surfers is unrelated to the cartel groups which rule over the state, downplaying the fourth dead body that was found with the victims but the circumstances surrounding this fourth victim may be key to unraveling the larger criminal ties of the perpetrators.

"HEARST" & "Char" for Borderland Beat

A judge has ordered that Mencho’s brother Abraham Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Rodo”, be released from federal custody.

The reporter Manuel Espino Bucio writes that Rodo is currently still inside Altiplano prison which means Rodo may be re-arrested for another charge immediately upon his release if the FGR is able to scramble together another charge.

Tribuna writes that Rodo “who is in the Altiplano prison, could leave in the next few hours.”
