Ex-Tamaulipas Governor Tomás Yarrington Pleads Guilty and Will Receive Soother Sentence

Yarrington was accused by several key witnesses of having ties with former leaders of the Gulf Cartel, Los Zetas, and the Beltran Leyva Cartel. These charges were dropped by US authorities. It remains to be seen if Yarrington will become a protected witness later on.
Tomas Yarrington Ruvalcaba, the former Governor of Tamaulipas from 1999 to 2005, admitted in a US courtroom today to have accepted over $3.5 million in illegal bribe money and using it fraudulently to purchase property in the United States.

As part of the plea, Yarrington also detailed how he accepted bribes from individuals and private companies in Mexico to do business with the state of Tamaulipas while he served as governor.

Originally, Yarrington faced up to life in prison if he had been convicted of the racketeering or drug trafficking conspiracy charges the U.S. government leveled against him eight years ago.

In more than 15,000 digital documents consisting of 100,000 pages, US investigators detailed how Yarrington took bribes from the Gulf Cartel, Los Zetas, and the Beltran Leyva Cartel, and actively participated in drug trafficking operations.

Authorities from multiple law enforcement agencies had pictures, information about warrants, seizures, and protected witness testimonies framing him as a top cartel figure.

Borderland Beat reports show that Yarrington was a key figure in the Gulf Cartel's ascension as one of Mexico's leading criminal groups in the late 1990s and early 2000s. During that era, the cartel was headed by legendary kingpin Osiel Cardenas Guillen.

US prosecutors walked away from the allegations and dismissed these serious charges after Yarrington pleaded guilty.

U.S. District Judge Hilda G. Tagle accepted the plea and will set sentencing at a later date. At that time, Yarrington faces up to 20 years in federal prison, although prosecutors expect it to be much lower. Yarrington has also agreed to forfeit the Port Isabel, Texas, condominium that they discovered was bought with drug money.

  1. Biggest cartel boss of the Gulf Cartel since Juan N. Guerra is this guy right here: Yarrington. What a sad day for all the Tamaulipecos who suffered from the actions and inactions of this man. Shame on the US, but after all this War on Drugs is a goddamn game where everyone — even US government — know it’s about filling their pockets.

  3. Cartels work for the Mexican government how is this fact not known.. a bribe would be a large payment in exchange for favours.. Extortion is receiving a percentage of revenue continuously enforced by threat of repercussions.. CJNG is allied with the Mexican government at the highest levels they have been tasked for the elimination & consolidation of the smaller independent cartels of central & southern Mexico.. These organizations are largely made up of the local indigenous populations where the federal government has no authority.. CJNG on the other hand is mostly made up of hired mercenaries with military or police backgrounds with leadership made up of ethnic Spaniards who have business & family links to the most elite untouchable Mexican families who control things from behind the scenes.. Mencho became a cop even after being deported for heroin trafficking in the USA than roos to the top of CJNG almost overnight.. unlike el chapo Mencho is educated can speak English has spent time in US & realized early on that the future of drug trade is synthetics while decertification of Cocaine smuggling to Europe & Asia..

CJNG will continue to expand until they completely dominate the North American & European drug trade securing billions more for the Mexican elite & American banking system..

2021 Mexican election means that no matter which political party wins EL SENOR MENCHO IS THE KING OF MEXICO!!

    1. Are you from Tamaulipas? This rumor was strong back in the early 1990s when he was running for mayor of Matamoros. There was a suspected ex-boyfriend of his, last name Torres, that was murdered in a motel in southern Matamoros. Right before his mayoral campaign in 1992 or something. I have the newspaper with me. I have it somewhere. No mention of Yarrington but can confirm through various reliable sources that they were rumored to be lovers. After that we never really heard much from this.
