Mexico frighteningly unprepared for Coronavirus, as president AMLO seems unfazed clutching "Good Luck" charms

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

Mexico continues to insist they have only 1 death from the virus-Mexico’s president says he’s putting trust in good-luck charms, as he continues to give his famous hugs.................
Mexico continues to hold massive events, this from last week

It is extremely difficult to glean coronavirus stats from Mexico.  Official these are the numbers, suspect as they are:

The Ministry of Health confirmed 25 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total to 164 infected in Mexico.

He explained that there are 314 suspected and 787 negative cases registered.

In addition, it reported that of the total of confirmed cases, 2 percent is serious and 7 percent stable.

According to the report, 71 percent of the patients have been treated in the Ssa and 23 percent in private hospitals.

Officially one death has been registered.

Mexico is a transition hub for migrants from all areas of the globe, hoping to cross into the U.S.  How can these numbers be accurate?  Organizations must question and investigate Mexico and the CV transmission in the country.

Mexico’s universal health care is a failure; extremely overburdened and underfunded I have interacted with the system while seeking treatment for children in my foundation needing medical.  It is not pretty, and any impression is shocking and negative.

One with money, can access world class care in the private sector, which is where I quickly switched when accessing medical care for my foundation kids.  Monterrey, Guadalajara, Mexico City has high quality private health care.

From Slate:

Last weekend, 110,000 people attended the “Vive Latino” music festival in Mexico City, which took place as scheduled despite several confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mexico’s capital. At the same time, while governments worldwide took drastic measures to slow down the spread of the disease, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as AMLO, traveled to the south of Mexico and met with adoring crowds, shaking hands and hugging and kissing supporters. During his daily press conferences, AMLO has insisted that his honesty and moral rectitude protect him from the virus and that the threat of COVID-19 is greatly exaggerated. “I have great faith that we will move our dear Mexico forward, that misfortunes and pandemics won’t affect us,” he told reporters at a press conference on Sunday.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Mexico may seem low, but it has grown exponentially over the last week, from eight to 118, and the first death from the disease was reported on Wednesday night. Moreover, Mexico has very limited testing capabilities, and the official statistics are not a reliable indicator of the actual number of cases in the country. Although the government’s position is that Mexico is still in “Phase 1” of the pandemic, meaning all diagnosed cases of COVID-19 are people who caught the virus while traveling abroad, most experts agree the virus is already rapidly spreading within Mexico and that the government’s nonchalance about the situation could have disastrous results.

“We need political leaders that are properly advised and understand the gravity of the situation,” said Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University. “A lot of people in Mexico would die unnecessarily unless the government gets very seriously prepared for this.” Getting seriously prepared means taking drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus, bolstering the hospital system, and helping people cope when the economy grinds to a halt.

LA Times:

In recent weeks, as Mexico’s neighbors to the north and south have restricted air travel and closed schools and businesses to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has nonchalantly portrayed his country as one on the sidelines of the global health crisis.

“Pandemics ... won’t do anything to us,” he said on Monday while accusing the media and his political opponents of exaggerating the threat.

He has declined to close his borders or ban travel from afflicted countries and has brazenly ignored recommendations from his own deputy health minister that Mexicans refrain from greeting each other with a customary hug and kiss.

At a large rally over the weekend, López Obrador waded proudly into the crowd, kissing children and embracing supporters. He has made a show of waving off offerings of anti-bacterial gel. And on Wednesday, before appearing at another large event, he showcased a collection of good-luck charms that he carries with him, including Catholic scapulars and a U.S. 2-dollar bill.  “They are my body guards”, says AMLO.

  3. Then if thousands of people get infected and reporters point them out, AMLO will just say that they're neoliberals trying to destroy the country. Then if the country goes through one day of fewer new cases, AMLO will say that the problem is solved.

According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 45 million cases of the flu in the United States during the 2017-2018 influenza season, resulting in an estimated 810,000 flu-associated hospitalizations and an estimated 61,000 flu-associated deaths

Keep in mind I dont usually agree with Chivis but she makes sense to me on this post. This Coronavirus thing is super hyped up. The numbers don't make sense. In a state with 40 million inhabitants, 20 deaths and about 1000 known cases, the percentage of people being infected/ dying are extremely low. EXTREEEEEMLY.

Maybe it's too early to tell but if things get to the exaggerated extremes the media is "predicting" then I'll admit I'm an idiot and I shouldn't of been so naive. 🤷🏽‍♂️ just remember, more people die from the flu than the coronavirus SO FAR.

  11. It's interesting and somewhat appalling to hear people place blame on Mexico's president for everything.
Hardly ever a praise for his reforms he has made since his inauguration. Many here at first cheering his efforts.
From crime to the high level of violence in his country.
Yet, America here if one looks closely has cities combating the same issues with no pointing fingers at its president. From gun violence to drug trafficking and consumption.
A political agenda is being revealed here with political intentions to allow such. Along with censorship.
These practices are why our world today is what it is.
Do I need to remind all, this global pandemic is affecting us all financially and humanity's behavior.

People are blaming AMLO for sticking his head in the sand and refusing to act accordingly to a global pandemic. Stop putting him on a pedestal.

Even if Chivis adopts the opposition's posturing as biblical truth, it is all propaganda aimed at extorting Chayote, 90% of anti-AMLO comments comes from opposite parasites like Denisse Dresser who is hurting without the millions of peisos she used to collect from FECAL and EPN when she would even pose as opposition along with loret de moolah, el pata de ceballo lopez doriga, Carlos Marin and her beloved boyfriend Brozo, el payaso tenebrozo.

Just stating truth to the political hypocrisies that face many globally.
This complexity of opinions and views from opposing parties has divided nations. Creating chaos rather the necessity for change.
Despite the overwhelmingly percentage of votes from its citizens for presidency, change is often met with resistance.
Mexico's financial crisis from past political corruption has contributed to what many are experiencing with today.
Moreover, with a pandemic that has no boundaries financially.
Lets not forget that many commentators here were among those supporters of AMLO.

Just stating facts if one were to look from previous posts and comments.

Peace to all. And God bless humanity.

  14. I live in Chihuahua, Mexico. Just on Wednesday I was coming back from El Paso and was driving on the Periferico de la Juventud at 8:30 heading home. The Costco parking lot was packed. The streets were packed with cars. I stopped at Santander Bank to get some cash from the teller machine. A Wednesday night and all the restaurants were packed, as well as small bars. They do not know what is going to happen here once the virus gets going. Everything is open. The Social Hospital in El Centro has a 2 day wait just to get into a bed. You literally have to sit in a chair in line for two days just to be put into a bed. I know. My wife's 84 year old grandfather just had a heart attack and he had to sit and wait in a chair for 50 hours after they checked his enzymes and confirmed the attack. Eight people died while in waiting. Many just leave because they cannot take it. How many young people could sit in a chair straight for 50 hours. Another reason the reports are low. Where do you get tested and where are the swabs to do it with. It is going to turn into a nightmare here. Not nearly enough beds, hospitals, or doctors. People in the USA have no idea how bad the social hospitals are here in Mexico. They could build a couple of more hospitals here in Chihuahua with the money that government officials rob.

Up until last week he kept saying the pandemic is a hoax. He was still lying yesterday. So many countries have been unprepared and have tried to get other countries to not do what they did. My kids are stuck all over the world, can't come home and there's no way I can go to where they are. My faith has allowed me not panic. Please take this seriously and be safe. God bless each of you. Peace.

as for AMLO. it is only fair that he be given time. he has done some positive social changes benefiting the most in need.

It should not surprise anyone that amlo is not concentrating on narco violence. he has always been honest about his priority and it was not narcos. if mexicans don't like what he is doing they can look in the mirror for blame. that said he still has a very high approval rating that would be the envy of any politician.
