One Candidate Murdered Every Four Days in Mexico Elections: OAS

A spike in assassinations in the run-up to Mexico's regional and national elections is "absolutely unacceptable," the Organization of American States (OAS) warned on Friday, March 16.

"It is an average of one murder of a candidate every four or five days: that is a margin of violence absolutely unacceptable in an electoral process, we are very worried," said OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro.

Mexico's next president – as well as numerous senators, federal deputies, governors and mayors – will be contested in July when millions of voters head to the polls.

"We are concerned about several elements in the Mexican election: the first is the assassination of candidates and political leaders in the country," Almagro said during a conference at the Casa America in Madrid.

On Friday morning, news of the murder of Gustavo Martin Gomez Alvarez, a mayoral candidate with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), reached the department of Puebla.

Local media is reporting that Gomez Alvarez was eating breakfast in Metlatoyuca at about 11:30 a.m. when a group of men drove up and shot him six times. The death is being investigated by the Puebla Public Prosecutor's Office as a homicide.

Earlier this month, mayoral candidates Homero Bravo Espino, with the Mexican Democratic Party (PRD), and Aaron Varela Martinez, with the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), were both shot dead.

Antonia Jaimes Moctezuma (PRD) and Dulce Nayeli Rebaja Pedro (Institutional Revolutionary Party), both precandidates for local elections in Chilapa, Guerrero, were killed on Feb. 21 and Feb. 25 respectively. Rebaja was also head of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Affairs for the state of
Guerrero.

According to the PRD's estimate, about 12 members of the party have been assassinated since the beginning of the election campaign in September.

Local media report that at least 54 pre-candidates from various parties have been murdered during the same period, while 83 have been assaulted.

Since 2006, more than 100 mayors have been killed, according to a report by the National Association of Mayors.

The OAS plans to send observers to the July elections in an attempt to safeguard electoral transparency.

  1. This is Cjng and EPN making sure they never lose the power. Your either with them or you die. Cjng knows as soon as they lose their president they will be ambushed by all other groups. This election is there survival. And if they win again. It’s over for CDS and pretty much every other Cartel. Because they will be highly inbedded into the government.

  2. Is this to insure business as usual for the angels? How do you fix this? First protect the judges and high level political officers, then lower level, and reporters. Doubt you can cover all at once? Start with one and work your way to others... Would this help? Scary stuff...

Italy beat benito mussolini to death and hung his nalgas from his palace, same fate of Nicolai Ceaucesscu.
Muhammad Khadaffy only got beat up and stabbed to death in the ass, El Chayo "El mas loco" just got beat to death...

    1. Democratic government? "Democracy" would be furthest from my mind were I considering words to best describe the embattled country. Mexico has been best described as "the perfect dictatorship," and the United States just loves it.

    2. “Merriam- Webster dictionary of democracy “

      a) A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.

Clearly a democratic system is displayed here.
It’s the controlling powers of a political system who are trying to maintain order and it’s continuous structure.

Dictatorship would best be described by the new ruling of China’s presidential powers. Moreover, as indefinite like that of Maos era.

    4. Democratic Mexico has never existed, just like democratic Russia and democratic republics of North Korea, China or a myriad of Banana republics in Latin America, but don't blame the mexicans, it is the local politicians practicing their local feudalism to keep their grip on power, the murdering must go on until the people cries for the return of El PRI just as it helped to get EPN get to power coupled with election stealing and shit...

  7. They should accept the truth. The Mexican government is corrupt and inept to protect and secure its own country. Murderers walk while freedopm fighters are incarcerated with unlimited term sentences. There is no justice in Mexico. EOS

  13. Well, what can ya say? The cartels are all powerful, wouldn't surprise me if they one day completely take over Mexico and enslave/exterminate the entire Mexican population in order to further expand their global drug and arms black market operations. Meanwhile the US turns a blind eye to all this. Truly shameful.

America would love to get involved, but the currupted government of Mexico will not allow it, since they are in cullusion with the Cartels. People will continue to die year after year.
