Video showing torture of suspect in Torreon

This is well out of my wheelhouse, but this video purportedly shows a suspect undergoing a beating administered by Policia Federal and then presumably signing a confession.

Did Kidnapped Torreon Teen Have Lazcas Baby?

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

I began this post to soley feature the article in Valley Central about a kidnapped teen possibly being Lazca girlfriend and the mother of his baby.  Sergio Chapa did a good job with the video which includes an interview of the girls mother.  The mother does not think it is her daughter, and I agree the facial features are different.

Not only that, I am saying, as I did when I first laid eyes on it, that it is not Lazca.  Way off.  His death photos confirmed my conclusion, features are not a match, even the ears, hairline and his weight is considerably less than his death photos and the photos from the Squirrels wedding.  I post them here including a side by side of the photos.

Secondly the bottom video is the full length video of footage identified by Valley Central as of Lazcas death, they  based their report on one from BDN who ran the video as Zetas in PN then changed it to Lazca.  The video was from the 7th and posted the 8th in the morning.  BB Forum posted it on the 8th early.  It was posted by Tierra, then Zocalo or visa versa.  You can see that it is a Piedras Negras video, not Lazca.

Below is the Valley Central story.

Just clearing out the trash and keeping the facts straight.

In the middle is the person identified as Lazca

Valley Central (sergio chapa):

Her teenage daughter Stephanie, or “Fanny” as their family called her, was kidnapped from the streets of Torreon Coahuila back in 2004.
Kidnappers claiming to be with the Zetas drug cartel demanded a ransom but then the calls stopped.
Fanny was 16 years old at the time she was kidnapped but eight years have passed.
But a twist to case following the death of Zetas supreme leader Heriberto Lazcano-Lazcano this weekend.
Blogs and Mexican media outlets all reported that authorities found a photo in Lazcano-Lazcano’s possession that could be Fanny.
The slain drug lord is seen in the photo with a young woman that many on-line are saying is Ortiz's missing daughter.
Ortiz is skeptical that the girl in the photo is her daughter based on physical traits.
“I can’t say that’s my daughter,” Ortiz said in an interview in Spanish via Skype. “Even less because that photo is just too blurry.”
Ortiz said the family’s search once brought them to Pharr here in the Rio Grande Valley back in 2007.
A prosecutor told the family that Fanny was living in the Valley and had even given birth to Lazcano-Lazcanos's baby on the American side of the border.
The family worked with the U.S. Marshals and identified five possible matches based on records of newborn babies.
Two were eliminated as possibilities but three of the females could never be verified.
“Of those three girls, we couldn’t verify them,” Ortiz said in Spanish. “We really don’t know if one of them could have been her.”
Ortiz said the family is clinging to hope that their daughter is still alive.
And if Fanny is living in the Valley, they hope someone can come forward with information.
“We’re many eyes, many eyes and if you see her, I beg you, implore you to help me,” Ortiz said in Spanish via Skype.
Thank for the heads up BB reader

Federales bag five armed suspects in Torreon

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A Policia Federal (PF) road patrol element encountered several unidentified armed suspects near a farm in Torreon, Coahuila, killing five, according to Mexican news reports.

According to a news item posted on the website of Vanguardia news daily, the shootout took place just after noon Saturday near the Matamoros-Torreon road near the Puerta de Torreon, where a PF patrol designated Grupo Geo observed five armed suspects in Sol de Oriente colony. When shots were exchanged, the criminal group fled into a farm house on calle Toyama.

The armed suspects continued fire on PF agents from inside the house, when agents decided to use pepper gas against the suspects. One suspect attempted to leave the farmhouse but was dropped by police gunfire. At the conclusion, PF agents found four armed suspects dead inside the house.

PF agents found two AK-47 and one AR-15 assault rifles, and one 9mm pistol.

In Torreon, in southern Coahuila state and Piedras Negras in northern Coahuila has experienced what can only be termed a severe uptick in drug and gang related violence especially since the prison break 12 days ago in the border city of Piedras Negras. According to Spanish and English language reports, Piedras Negras has experienced shootings nearly every day since the prison break.

According to Mexican press accounts many of those released from prison were members of Los Zetas criminal group.

According to a report published in last Wednesday's Eagle Pass, Texas Business Journal, the municipality of Piedras Negras has been under martial law.

However, under the Mexican Constitution, martial law can only be imposed by the Mexican president of the republic and only with consent of the Chamber of Deputies and the president's cabinet.

No other Mexican media outlet or even social media have confirmed that the municipality was under martial law, or that a declaration of martial has been announced.

Terror in Torreon: 9 die, 21 wounded in funeral shootout

UPDATED X2 with new information from El Sol de Mexico
By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Nine unidentified individuals were shot to death and another 21 were wounded in a mass shooting at a funeral in Torreon, Coahuila Monday afternoon, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to news stories posted on the websites of EL Diario de Coahuila news daily and a wire dispatch which appeared on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas news daily, the shooting took place at the cemetery Jardines del Tiempo at around 1620 hrs.  The cemetery is located near the intersection of the  Torreon-Matamoros road and Avenida Gilberto Rodriguez.

A news report posted on the website of El Sol de Mexico news daily reported that two more unidentified individuals died of their wounds.  Three others of the 21 who were taken for medical attention were listed in serious condition.  Two of the shooting victims were children, but only one is said to have died.

According to press reports, some of the shooters were within the crowd of mourners and used 9mm, .45, .25 calibers and .38 Super pistols.  Five pistols were abandoned at the scene.  Other spent shell casings were found at the scene prompting speculation in the press that at least some of the mourners counterfired their own weapons brought to the funeral.

According to the El Sol de Zacatecas story, armed suspects arrived at the scene aboard three SUVs, dismounted and commenced firing, presumably prompting some mourners to return fire.

The funeral was for an individual identified as Ricardo Valdez Tacubaya whose body was found in a vehicle Saturday.  Valdez Tacubaya resided in Ejido San Pedro.

Mexican Policia Federal Abandons La Laguna

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

In an unusual speculative Sunday morning report, El Diario de Coahuila news daily reported that Policia Federal (PF) units have abandoned the La Laguna region.

La Laguna region encompasses the cities of Torreon, Coahuila and Ciudad Lerdo and Gomez Palacio, Durango, where since October 2011, a major security operation -- dubbed Segura Laguna -- has been underway including Mexican Army PF units, Coahuila and Durango state police and local police in a comprehensive plan to tamp down on cartel violence in the region.

According to the report, Policia Federal Preventativa (PFP) patrol units have not been seen in the region for at least two days prompting speculation PF units have been ordered to leave La Laguna. The report cites recent violence, the latest of which was the discovery of three dead in Gomez Palacio, Durango three days ago and the murder of the Saltillo, Coahuila police chief -- the second such murder in as many months.

The report also charges PF agents with adding to the problems of violence.

Other violent incidents have taken place as well, but in Saltillo mainly involving Los Zetas cartel operatives. Those confrontations have included firefights between Los Zetas and federal and state security forces, as well as intergang fighting.

Los Zetas maintain a presence, if weakened, in neighboring Zacatecas state, that despite an increase in deployment of Mexican Army troops to that state.

A month ago, a senior commander, General Marco Antonio Gonzalez Barreda was replaced by another field commander, General de Division Roberto de la Vega Diaz, who was assigned as commander of the Mexican IX Military Region, based in Saltillo. That command encompasses Coahuila and Chihuahua states, including the La Laguna region.

The rotating of Mexican Army field commanders is not ordinarily done, because commanders tend to remain at their posts until their mission is complete, or if a sharp reverse has taken place. The ongoing violence in Saltillo prior to the January 18th, 2012 rotation may have been as much a factor in the decision to replace General Gonzalez Barreda, as recent violence in the same time frame in Chilipancingo, Guerrero, where General de la Vega came from.

A total of 4,000 federal and state effectives have been deployed to the region so far.

Last May, 2011 1,500 Mexican Army troops and another 300 PF troops were sent to Coahuila. Last September, 2011, additional troops were deployed to the La Laguna region, in apparent anticipation of start of the Segura Laguna security operations.

Late in December, 2011, parts of the Mexican 15th Motorized Cavalry Regiment were deployed to Saltillo, Coahuila after a two day road march to reinforce security efforts in northern Coahuila, including Piedra Negras. Those troops were earmarked to participate in the ongoing security operations in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon states

This latest report is surprising in light of President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa's remarks in Juarez last Friday when he credited the presence of federal security forces including PF operatives with reducing the violence in that border city.

Hola, soy Iliana

I am happy to announce that I will be reporting for Borderland Beat. There is so much happening right now, especially in the area of Tamaulipas which I will be covering.

Some of you are asking me for some background information, but for security reasons I can't provide my name or  location.

Just so you know, most of the information here at Borderland Beat many times comes from open sources and is not verified. It is for information purposes only and we have found that the Mexican government and Mexican media sometimes are not reliable with their information, so understand that, bueno?

You can go to the "About" page for more information on this. We also need more authors from the Mexican side of the border, so if you have the time to report on events, let the admin know, and we could make you part of the team. The target audience is English readers, so it will have to be in English.

If you have something to contribute, be a story or material, send it my way, I have my email on my profile.

Well that is all and thank you for all the encouragement.

Here is a Youtube video of the incident in Torreon where at least four people were executed. It's never good news here, but it's important for the folks in the US know what is happening here in Mexico.

Chao!

Kidnap Attempts Leaves 8 Dead

Mexico kidnapping attempt leaves 8 dead.

L.A. Times

Torreon, Coahuila - A Mexico federal police officer and seven gunmen are killed after a kidnapping at a mall in Torreon. The two kidnapping victims are freed. Officials blame the Zetas drug gang.

A kidnapping attempt in northern Mexico led to a highway car chase and gun battle that left seven gunmen and a federal police officer dead, Mexican authorities said.

The federal Public Safety Ministry said two kidnapping victims were freed after the late-Monday shootout with gunmen believed to belong to the drug-trafficking gang known as the Zetas.

Federal police in Coahuila state went to a shopping center in the city of Torreon after getting a report that two people had been taken captive. When the officers arrived, the suspects opened fire, authorities said.

One gunman was killed and another seriously wounded in the exchange of fire.
