The Year Long Sinaloa Cartel Internal War Has Left Over 1,850 Dead

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat
From an Infobae Article

September 9, 2024 marked the beginning of an internal war in the Sinaloa Cartel that, after a year of clashes between the Los Chapitos and Los Mayos factions , left a balance of 1,850 people killed (according to the latest security reports), more than 1,800 forced disappearances and a climate of insecurity that transformed the daily and economic life of Sinaloa.

Despite the deployment of more than 14,000 federal troops and multiple operations, violence persists, and Sinaloa society faces a landscape of uncertainty and fear.

The five men were captured during a military helicopter operation in La Guamuchilera, where an arsenal was seized.

Five men, including an alleged leader of a criminal cell in the employ of "Los Chapitos," were sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after being captured in a massive military operation in Mocorito.

The Attorney General's Office (FGR), through the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO), reported that those sentenced are Esaú "Q," Luis "B," Juan "Z," Jimmy "B," and Librado "I."

The detainees received sentences of ten years, five months, and 29 days in prison for the crimes of carrying a firearm with aggravating circumstances and possession of magazines and cartridges for the exclusive use of the Armed Forces.

The arrest in Mocorito
According to the investigation file, the five "generators of violence" were arrested near the town of La Guamuchilera, Mocorito, during a military deployment involving helicopter gunships and special forces from the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).

During the operation, Luis Alberto, alias "El Cañas," was captured. He was identified as the alleged leader of a "Los Chapitos" criminal cell and considered the right-hand man of Humberto Figueroa, alias "La Perris" or "El 27," a Sinaloa cartel affiliate.

That day, federal forces seized a significant arsenal, including five high-powered firearms, 11 fully loaded magazines, 1,412 live rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, tactical vests, and two vehicles.

Everything was made available to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, which gathered sufficient evidence to secure a conviction against the suspects considered "generators of violence" in the central and northern regions of the state, linked to crimes that occurred in Culiacán and communities of Mocorito.

The District Judge determined that the convicted individuals must serve their sentences in the Aguaruto Penitentiary in Culiacán.

El Bitache sends message to his former employees La Chapiza Cartel with a dismembered body placed inside an ice chest cooler in Tepuche, Sinaloa.

 BY: CHAR

AUGUST 1, 2025

In the early morning of August 1, 2025, a dismembered body was placed inside an ice chest cooler in Tepuche, Sinaloa, and a message was left where 'El Bitache' claimed responsibility. The grotesque images are another reminder of the current brutal war conflict between Los Mayos/ La Mayiza/ MF VS Los Chapitos/ Los Chapos/ La Chapiza.

El Bitache once controlled the San Ignacio plaza in Sinaloa under the La Chapiza Cartel, but alongside his powerful boss, Ceferino Espinoza Angulo, "El Koyote," "El Koy," "El 14," both decided to join the Fausto Isidro Meza "Chapo Isidro" Flores organization.

EL BITACHE MESSAGE FOR LA CHAPIZA CARTEL

TRANSLATION OF MESSAGE:

"This is going to happen to all the filthy pigs. Especially you, Pelucas, the cow-stealer, the El Coco Ranas, and the chimalis. This is how all the people who are supporting that bunch of scum will end up. This is your father, El Bitache."

Another blow to Los Chapitos: Sinaloa Cartel operative 'El Chochías' falls. El Chochias was a former Los Damaso enforcer and was captured by the Navy In Navolato, Sinaloa.

JULY 27, 2025

THIS INFORMATION WAS POSTED BY RADIOFORMULA

Sinaloa experienced a violent day, with up to 15 deaths reported at the start of the weekend.

José Maximiliano Insunza Ruiz, better known as "El Chochías" or "El 60," was captured by federal agents in the municipality of Navolato, Sinaloa. He is identified as an operative for Los Chapitos. At the same time, at least 15 people were reported dead in acts of violence in Sinaloa on Saturday.

Insunza Ruiz was arrested in the town of Campo Balbuena and in the municipality of Navolato. He is considered the right-hand man of Juan Carlos Bernal, alias "El 11," another operative of the criminal organization led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. This individual was captured by members of the Navy (Semar).

Upon his capture, "El Chochías" was seized from a 9mm pistol with seven magazines and 54 cartridges, as well as 95 bags of a substance similar to marijuana and 103 bags of a substance resembling crystal meth. Everything seized was turned over to the Attorney General's Office (FGR).

In another operation carried out in Navolato, Sinaloa, two other people were arrested, according to information from the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat (SSPE). These individuals, whose identities have been withheld, were seized: an AK-47 rifle, an M4 rifle, two handguns, and 10 magazines of various calibers.

These arrests are in addition to the violent incidents reported in Sinaloa on Saturday: at least 15 bodies were found in different parts of the state, according to a report by José Luis Echegaray, a correspondent for Radio Fórmula, in a link with Juan Becerra Acosta.

The events of the violent day were concentrated in the municipalities of Ahome and Culiacán, according to a Radio Fórmula correspondent. All of these incidents occurred one year after the capture of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel and head of the "Los Mayos" or "Los Mayitos" faction.

At least 1,632 people have died in acts of violence since July 2024; in addition, 1,500 people have been reported missing. The violence has not only disrupted the lives of residents but also business owners, who are forced to close their businesses earlier.

In this past week, authorities announced the deployment of 1,800 Army personnel to reinforce security in Sinaloa. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch stated that criminal organizations, such as Los Chapitos, have been "reduced" by the operations.

The News

On July 25, 2024, one year ago, news of the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada began to spread like wildfire in international, national, and Sinaloa media, as well as on social media and WhatsApp groups. But it wasn't the only news; there was also talk of the arrest of Joaquín Guzmán López, son of “El Chapo.” Both were being held by the United States government.

That same day, the Attorney General of the neighboring country, Merrick B. Garland, confirmed that “El Mayo” Zambada and “El Chapo's” son were detained in El Paso, Texas. Both were accused of multiple counts of criminal activity, as well as being part of that country's fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking network.

The hours passed, the news shook Sinaloa and the country, and no federal authority issued a statement. It was the following day, July 26, when the then President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, asked his Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to provide the information they had.

The federal official stated that it was at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, when a call was received from the U.S. Embassy alerting them to the custody of both drug traffickers. The identities of both alleged criminals were later verified, prompting the Mexican government to request a photo and notify the secretaries of the Navy and the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).

At the same time, Rosa Icela emphasized that "the Mexican government did not participate in this arrest or surrender, and we will continue to collaborate with the United States government," she said, leaving more questions than answers for Mexicans and unnerving the people of Sinaloa who, although they imagined what was coming, never realized the magnitude of this war fueled by drone attacks and explosive devices.

MAYO ZAMBADA

JOAQUIN GUZMAN LOPEZ

Zambada's Letter

Sixteen days after "El Mayo" was arrested, he broke his silence and shared a letter through his lawyer describing what happened on July 25 at the Huertos del Pedregal farm in Culiacán, Sinaloa, where he had supposedly been summoned to resolve the political conflict at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS).

In the letter, which was released on August 10, Ismael Zambada stated that he was the victim of an "ambush" orchestrated by Joaquín Guzmán López, son of "El Chapo" Guzmán, who allegedly kidnapped him to hand him over to the United States government.

I want to say from the outset that I did not surrender and I did not come to the United States voluntarily, nor did I have any agreement with either government. On the contrary, I was kidnapped and brought to the United States by force and against my will.

I also had no agreement with either government. On the contrary, I was kidnapped and brought to the United States by force and against my will,” he stated.

According to his account, Joaquín Guzmán López requested a meeting with Ismael Zambada to resolve some political differences in Sinaloa.

“El Mayo” shared that he arrived at the meeting place before 11:00 a.m. accompanied by four members of his security detail. Two remained outside the perimeter, while others entered with him: José Rosario Heras López, commander of the Judicial Police of the State of Sinaloa, and Rodolfo Chaidez, a longtime member of his security team.

On the way to the meeting area, he saw Cuén Ojeda and one of his aides, whom he greeted briefly. When he met Joaquín Guzmán López, the latter gestured for him to follow him, and they led him to another darkened room.

"As soon as I set foot inside that room, I was ambushed. A group of men assaulted me, threw me to the floor, and placed a dark-colored hood over my head. They tied me up and handcuffed me, and then forced me into the back of a pickup truck," recalled Zambada, who asserted that he was subjected to physical abuse that caused injuries to his back, knees, and wrists.

Later, they took him to a landing strip where they forced him onto a private plane with only the pilot, Joaquín, and himself on board. The flight lasted approximately three hours to El Paso, Texas, where US agents were already waiting for him.

"The notion that I voluntarily surrendered or cooperated is completely and unequivocally false. I was brought to this country by force and under duress, without my consent and against my will," he said.

Investigation Timeline

In August 2024, the Attorney General's Office requested the case and opened an investigation against Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López for the possible crimes of illegal flight; illegal use of air facilities; violation of immigration and customs laws; kidnapping; treason (Article 123 of the Federal Penal Code); and any other related charges.

The agency requested all relevant information from the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, which he provided to authorities and the media, demonstrating that he had not been in Sinaloa on the day of the alleged meeting at the farm. He also clarified that he was never aware of the meeting and that "El Mayo" had likely been summoned under this false pretense.

In February 2025, Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero confirmed that the Mexican government had requested Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada's repatriation to Mexico from the moment he was arrested in the United States, as he has three arrest warrants against him in Mexico.

The Murder of Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda

That same July 25, 2024, the day of the surrender of "El Mayo" along with the son of "El Chapo," but already after 9:00 p.m., Sinaloa was shaken again by the news of the attack on the leader of the Partido Sinaloense, Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda, at a gas station located on the Mexico 15 international highway, near the town of La Presita, north of Culiacán.

He was transferred to a private hospital in the city of Culiacán, but it was reported that he had arrived without vital signs. Reporters crowded outside the clinic, broadcasting live, still in disbelief at what was happening.

However, in the letter in which "El Mayo" describes how he was kidnapped, he revealed that Cuén was murdered on the same ranch and at the exact time he was taken from the farm to the United States.

I know that the official version given by the Sinaloa state authorities is that Héctor Cuén was shot on the night of July 25th at a gas station by two men on a motorcycle who wanted to steal his truck. That is not what happened. They killed him at the same time and in the same place where I was kidnapped," he stated.

Zambada García lamented the murder of someone he considered his friend, as well as the disappearance of two members of his security team: José Rosario Heras López and Rodolfo Chaidez. They remain missing to this day.

In August 2024, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) complained about inaccuracies in the investigation conducted by the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sinaloa into the murder of Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda. Among the most notable are:

The autopsy did not correctly establish the immediate cadaveric signs, temperature, thanatological signs, lividity, or the correct description and evolution of the body.

  • The body has severe bruising on the head.
  • The body was shot four times in the legs.
  • The gas station video has sound, but only one gunshot can be heard.
  • The crime scene and vehicle have not been criminally processed.
  • Although there are human blood stains in the truck's bed, there are no expert reports or determinations on the matter.
  • Nor have all the authorities involved complied with the body preservation measures, allowing cremation, which is contrary to criminalistic practices for homicide investigations.

For this reason, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) flatly rejected the version that Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda was murdered at a gas station in Culiacán, calling it "unacceptable" and a "set-up."

The Farm in Huertos del Pedregal

On August 21, Attorney General's Office agents located the farm named San Julián/Santa Julia, where the alleged meeting was held where Zambada García was kidnapped to be handed over to the United States government, and, it is now known, where Cuén Ojeda was murdered.

The property is located on the right side, at the end of the main avenue in the rural area, near the Bellavista police station, part of the Culiacancito municipality. It has a large wall with an electric fence at the top, security gates, a large pool, thatched roofs, grills, and beautiful gardens with palm trees.

At first glance, traces of dried blood were visible on the access ramp to the main entrance gate of the property. The Attorney General's Office began the searches on August 31.

In October 2024, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) reported that blood stains were found on the property, which federal forensic units have accurately determined correspond to the former rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda. This confirms that the person was present at the scene of the kidnapping and that his bloodstains correspond to the time the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has established as the time of his murder, which occurred many hours before the locally released video of a gas station, which has since been dismissed by the FGR itself.

It also reported that human blood was found in the bed of the vehicle, corresponding to Rodolfo "C," currently missing and referred to in Ismael Zambada's letter as his bodyguard or member of his security team.

For all of the above reasons, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) has initiated an investigation into the alleged criminal and administrative responsibilities of police officers, public prosecutors, experts, and various personnel from the Attorney General's Office of the State of Sinaloa, who have already been thoroughly investigated for their involvement in the death of Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda.

Message of calm overtaken by reality

Days after Zambada's surrender, and given the context of the conditions in which it had taken place, journalists asked a Defense commander if they expected the violence in Sinaloa to escalate, and the answer was no.

I think not, but we will remain alert; we are prepared for any situation, with sufficient force to react to any eventuality. After this arrest, things have been relatively calm."

Things changed, and then a war between criminal groups would ensue, taking the streets as a battlefield and driving back the population.

September 9

Once the farm was located in August and the letter confirming the rumors was revealed: Ismael Zambada had been ambushed and handed over "by force" to the United States. On September 9, a shootout that left several soldiers wounded and one dead marked the beginning of the war between the two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel: on the one hand, the Zambadas' fury over the surrender of "El Mayo," and on the other, "Los Chapitos" defending the territory and containing the backlash attacks for having handed Ismael Zambada over to the US government.

At the end of his letter, "El Mayo" Zambada sent a message:

I also call on the people of Sinaloa to exercise restraint and maintain peace in our state. Nothing is resolved with violence. We've traveled that path, and we all lose," he concluded.

A message that was evidently not heeded by the groups that unleashed an era of shootouts fueled by explosive devices, executions, kidnappings, and bloodthirsty narco-messages accompanied by mutilated bodies, tire-punching in public spaces, attacks on homes, and assaults on the Mexican Army and police in Sinaloa. This has now lasted more than 10 months, resulting in the deaths of innocent people in the crossfire.

Today in Sinaloa, in addition to local police forces, there are federal reinforcements with more than 15,000 members of the Army, Navy, National Guard, and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. Omar García Harfuch and President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's security cabinet are constantly visiting to restore peace and tranquility to the people of Sinaloa.

Despite the results of more than 1,500 arrests, the seizure of thousands of firearms, and even though there are less "ugly" days than at the beginning, the question for the people of Sinaloa remains the same: When will the violence end?

150 Mexican Army Special Forces Known As "Bats" arrive to reinforce security in Culiacán, Sinaloa. Military Reinforcements Keep Arriving In Sinaloa.

LUZ NOTICIAS

JOSE RODRIGUEZ: While you were sleeping, 150 Mexican Army bats arrived to reinforce security here in Culiacán. They arrived at the Culiacán International Airport. Details with Sebastián Martínez. On with the report.

SEBASTIAN MARTINEZ: Good morning. How are you, José? Good morning to you. Also, good morning to the entire Luz Noticias audience. Well, as you were saying, yesterday 150 Mexican Army special forces arrived, known as bats. These elements arrived at Military Air Base No. 10, which is located right where Culiacán International Airport is. The arrival of these elements was scheduled for 3 p.m. However, well, it was delayed. The first aircraft arrived at 5 P.M., between 5 and 5:30P.M. There were four Mexican Air Force C295 aircraft arriving, in which these 150 troops arrived. The first, as I mentioned, arrived around 5 p.m. Later, after 9 p.m., between 9 and 10 p.m., the other aircraft began to arrive, carrying the 150 troops, known as the bats of the Mexican Army's special forces. These troops are coming to reinforce security here in Culiacán after these events, which we are all aware of, and they will join the 11,000 Mexican Army troops already deployed in the different municipalities here in the state of Sinaloa. José,

JOSE RODRIGUEZ: yes, we are seeing exclusive images there. of the arrival of these 150 bats that are coming down or were coming down from a Mexican Air Force plane, and there's the deployment. They're special elements, that's why they're classified as bats. Sebastián,

SEBASTIAN: Yes, that's right. They're from the special forces. Uh, they call themselves bats. Even on their helmets, on their uniforms, they have bat logos plastered on them. That's how they identify themselves as members of the special forces, known as bats. And they came heavily armed with rifles, well, for the exclusive use of the Mexican army, like M4 carbines, mini rifles, and so on. José,

SEBASTIAN: Yes, they are special elements, elements that have to carry out the mission no matter where they are sent. That's why they are called bats, and they are arriving after Omar García Harfuch's visit last Sunday. The bats come with a strategy, but they won't make it known, obviously. But these special elements are arriving, which are so needed. And there's also a lot of criticism that, oh, well, a number of elements from the Navy, the Army, the National Guard are arriving, but the clashes continue. Eh, armed people, armed civilians, continue circulating through the city of Culiacán, and the checkpoints they are setting up at some intersections are useless; they are only there to annoy people. Well, let's hope the bats work, that they arrive, that they put an end to all this. We're about to mark a year since this whole situation began between the Sinaloa cartel's organized crime groups. It's July 23rd.
Next Friday, July 25th, marks one year since the alleged kidnapping of Ismael Mayo Zambada to the United States. It hasn't been very clear what happened.  Well, these 150 bats have arrived.
We'll be keeping an eye on what their exact functions will be. I don't think they'll say it, Sebastián

SEBASTIAN: Yes, no, they don't usually say it. In fact, last Sunday, the federal security cabinet was meeting here in Culiacán, and General Ricardo Trevilla was announcing that they would implement new strategies. He announced that they had a force of around 11,000 troops here in Sinaloa. These 150 special forces are coming to Culiacán. However, they won't know exactly what tasks they will carry out, for their own safety and to ensure that the operations are successful, JOSE.

SEBASTIAN: Well, there are the images. Go to our Facebook page, go to our YouTube channel, Luz Noticias was there documenting the arrival of these 150 bats who are coming to join the security of Culiacán. Thank you for this report, Sebastián. Good morning.

Commander Nitro had been in the State Police for 10 years and was murdered on his day off In Culiacan, Sinaloa. La Mayiza / MF Targets Police Members Linked To Los Chapitos

 CHAR

JULY 17, 2025

VIDEO TRANSLATION

SAMUEL MARISCAL: Today we have information related to the follow-up of the case of Commander Nitro, a member of the state police who was murdered yesterday. The governor, Rubén Rocha Moya, has already spoken out on the matter.

JOSE RODRIGUEZ: Yes. Uh, this issue is causing a lot of talk because of how he was executed, how he was murdered in broad daylight, between 1:32 p.m. on Pedro Infante Boulevard, along the tourist car corridor, one of the most important thoroughfares here in Culiacán, in front of the Secretariat of Public Education and Culture. There, they executed him with bullets, a quantity of bullets that the armored truck in which Commander Nitro was traveling was, accompanied by a woman, and so many bullets, so I managed to get past the armored vehicle. Yes. And Commander Nitro took his life, eh, says Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, and also the Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat. He had been with the corporation for approximately 10 years. But this is what Governor Rubén Rocha was talking about during a visit to the port of Mazatlán. He is at the Pikachos dam at a Fisheries Secretariat event, and commenting on this issue, Commander Nitro dismisses the report of violence following the murder and
affirms that the case is already being investigated. Let's listen to the governor.

RUBEN ROCHA MOYA: Well, remember that I don't talk to well, I don't talk to security issues because that should be provided by the commissioner for that purpose. He's now in the morning giving eh, information about that. I know more about the incident, more than what was said at the meeting. Well, that the incident occurred, but I don't know. An investigation file has begun, but there's no further progress. Eh, today there were fewer homicides than usual. I'm not saying it's over, I'm not saying that, but that doesn't represent any increase of violence****

JOSE RODRIGUEZ: Well, the murder of Commander Nitro doesn't represent any increase, and well, today at the conference between the state government spokesperson and the Secretary of Public Security, they talked about Commander Nitro's career: 10 years of service in the state police, and she was murdered on her day off. Details with Rocío Sánchez. Go ahead, Rocío. Good afternoon.

ROCIO SANCHEZ: Good afternoon, José Samuel, Luz Noticias Audience. That's right. Just as you're reporting, the State Secretariat of Public Security revealed that Commander Nitro had been in the state police for 10 years and was murdered on his last day off. Through the State spokesperson, the Secretariat also detailed that the police officer was 32 years old and was assigned to the southern part of the state, specifically in Mazatlán. Let's listen to what the spokesperson told the corporation on August 15, 2015. He was assigned as coordinator of a special group of the State Preventive Police in November 2023, and was relieved of his duties in February of this year due to normal changes in the security department. He was on his day off. The spokesperson for the State Public Security Secretariat detailed that Commander Nitro joined the corporation on August 15, 2015, and at that time held the rank of first officer. She explained that in November 2023, he was assigned as coordinator of a special group of the State Preventive Police, and in February 2025, he was relieved of his post due to normal changes in the agency.

JOSE ROGRIGUEZ: José, yes, what happened yesterday is such a regrettable situation.
Cars were also hit in this shooting. Imagine, Samuel, passing through Pedro Infante at this same time, 1:30, 2 p.m. Yes. And getting hit by a bullet,

SAMUEL: Very dangerous at any time, but it also depends a lot on the area, right? When there are explosions in some neighborhoods and communities, collateral damage is less likely. But here in this case, José, the peak traffic time is a time when many people go to eat, right? And it's an area of the city through which many vehicles pass, working in this very eastern part, with so many companies, with so many businesses in Culiacán. So, fortunately, we don't have reports of any other people injured other than the person who was with the commander, but there was material damage to several vehicles. Yes, collateral damage, that's what they've called it. Uh, several vehicles. Yesterday, we counted at least four vehicles that were shot, and that's the reality of Culiacán. At those times, you can be stopped at a traffic light, and the person behind you may be an armed group, or the person on one side may be carrying long guns, or the person on the other side may be carrying long guns as well. Armed people are circulating right now in the city of Culiacán with total impunity, Samuel.

SAMUEL: Yes, that's the most delicate thing, and one isn't a fortune teller, José. One has to live one's life. And I personally imagine that all of us who live in Culiacán, when we're driving, traveling through the streets, in some corner of our minds, the thought of what if it were me here, a shooting, a gunshot, an attack were to happen. I think we all think about it. Fortunately, it hasn't happened to all of us, but all the people who were traveling yesterday on Pedro Infante Street did have this bad experience. It's the current reality of Culiacán. We would like it to be different, but, well, unfortunately, it is.

June records the highest monthly homicide rate nationwide and the highest in the state since April 2011, when 227 homicides were recorded.

On the morning of Monday, June 30, four decapitated bodies were hung from the access bridge to the Seminary, on the Culiacán-Los Mochis highway, north of Culiacán. A few meters away, 16 more bodies were piled inside a white panel-type truck with messages written on the sides. One of them was also mutilated. The murder rate that day reached 30. In total, in the sixth month of the year and the tenth since the beginning of the fight between the Mayos and Chapos, 207 people were murdered in Sinaloa, according to the State Attorney General's Office, and 210, according to the National Security Cabinet. Both figures are the highest since April 2011, when 227 crimes were recorded amid the war between the Beltrán Leyva brothers and the Sinaloa Cartel, and when the highest monthly homicide figure was 228 in August 2010.

On the same day the 20 bodies were found, Governor Rubén Rocha Moya stated at the weekly press conference that with the help of the Federation they would solve the problem of the increase in intentional homicides.

"We haven't actually improved; the president herself has said so. May-June represents more (murders) for us. We are also working on that, we also have sufficient personnel, we have extraordinary assistance from the Federation, and we will surely resolve it," he stated.

The governor affirmed that, just as a cabinet study was conducted on vehicle theft to implement strategies and reduce the incidence, the same is being done on intentional homicides.

The following day, Tuesday, July 1, three people were murdered, and on Wednesday, July 2, four more.

On the morning of Thursday, July 3, President Claudia Sheinbaum admitted that homicides have decreased in virtually every state in the country, except for Sinaloa, where "the highest levels" are recorded, and promised that next Tuesday she will present a reinforced security strategy. That day, there were 13 intentional homicides in the state.

In April, 119 murders were reported in the state, 165 in May, and 207 in June, according to statistics from the FGE. This means that, when compared to the previous two months, the increase was 25.45 percent.

Last month, Sinaloa also had the highest number of homicides nationwide, surpassing even Guanajuato, which recorded 171; the State of Mexico, which totaled 132; Chihuahua, with 128; and Baja California, which had 123 murders. In total, there were 1,818 murders nationwide, of which 11.55 percent occurred in the state.

The President's U-turns

On October 2, 2024, during the first "Mañanera del Pueblo" (People's Morning Conference), Sheinbaum was questioned about the wave of violence in Sinaloa, which had already lasted nearly two months, and responded that there were more homicides in Guanajuato.

“…Sinaloa doesn't appear among the five states with the highest number of homicides. Guanajuato remains the first. Chihuahua and the State of Mexico were also the first, but Guanajuato is the highest, again,” he said.

Since the start of the war between the Los Chapitos faction and El Mayito Flaco, murders have been on the rise. Until then, the highest number had been 52 intentional homicides recorded in January 2024, but 142 were committed in September.

October saw the second highest number, with 182. Since then, the trend had been downward, with 175 in November, 156 in December, 138 last January, 119 in February, and then again in March with 135 intentional homicides, before dropping again in April with 119.

The downward trend halted in May and rebounded in June, which became the month with the most murders since the start of the war between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel on September 9.

From January to December 2024, the state Attorney General's Office recorded 993 intentional homicides, of which 655 occurred in the last four months of that year.

Between January and June 2025, the statistic is 883 murders, meaning that by mid-year, 89 percent of all homicides in 2024 had occurred.

During the conflict between Chapos and Mayos, murders, clashes, blockades, kidnappings, and car thefts intensified in the state, centered in Culiacán and spreading to Navolato, Eldorado, Mazatlán, Rosario, Concordia, Escuinapa, and Elota, primarily. Culiacán travel guide

During May, blockades and clashes also occurred in Guasave, Guamúchil, and Los Mochis, but they later subsided.

To date, it is estimated that during the 10 months of the conflict, more than 1,600 people have been deprived of their liberty and more than 5,700 vehicles have been stolen in the state, while murders are on the rise, despite the operations and visits implemented by Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, to reinforce the strategy.
