Four Los Rusos Gunmen Killed in Shootout in San Juan Cacahuatepec, Oaxaca

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

Four Los Rusos gunmen, including a local commander, were killed by state and federal security forces in a shootout in San Juan Cacahuatepec, Oaxaca near the Guerrero border on Sunday.

According to authorities, agents of the State Investigation Agency (AEI) and Tactical Operations Group (GOT) were conducting an operation against Los Rusos when they were ambushed on the road to the town of Los Naranjos, at the exit towards Pinotepa Nacional. In the ensuing gunfight, four gunmen, including Eduardo "El 09", previously identified as an officer of Los Rusos, were slain, according to Oaxaca journalist Tomás Martínez J.

Local authorities say Los Rusos are a criminal group involved in homicides, kidnappings, drug dealing, and drug trafficking in eight municipalities in the coastal region of Oaxaca and 15 in the state of Guerrero. The group was behind the July 13 killing of Pedro Martínez Barroso, former municipal president of San Juan Cacahuatepec and member of the PVEM. In early August, “El 07”, a Rusos commander was arrested in San Juan Cacahuatepec for the killing.

A Mexican military leadership chart of Los Rusos shows Jose Gil Caro Quintero, alias "Pelo Chino", the nephew of Rafael Caro Quintero, as the groups national level boss.
