Sol Prendido has decided to part ways from BORDERLAND BEAT for personal reasons**UPDATE
I (Char, Mike 7, Ivan) have nothing but great things to say about Sol Prendido, and I wish him the best.
SOL deserves lots of recognition for his arduous work at Borderland Beat his daily post will be missed.

ReplyDeletewhen I posted stories, I was like 25 years old, had the time, I liked to see what was happening in TJ and Sinaloa, and show that to more people. read the comments. it kept me sharp and informed. but after awhile, it's a lot of work - and it's draining. it's killing after killing and I tried to do something more, rather than "2 bodies found on highway, with hands tied" but it affected me after awhile. somehow writing about it and personalizing it is different than just talking... staring at the degradation after awhile....
I liked analyzing too. you can even see in my stories when I was personally romantically heartbroken or whatever, and the stories would take on this really dreamy romantic quality- lol- but it would be about like a handcuffed body.

@ J. I remember the reaction to that Barbie arrest, and the starry eyed responses- I just re-read the whole thread- but there are other discussions from a decade ago that just don't happen anymore. If that Barbie story came out today the responses would be just as dumb.

Sol had his moments, and the site has had its ups and downs. Some of the recent work by Hearst and Char and a few others is incredible, almost like investigative reporting. When the Forum went down for legal reasons, the nature of comments changed. But there’s always been humor in the comments - profanity and too many people with the same joke or crass remark so it gets boring. A lot of people kind of live vicariously through the characters - Chapitos, Mencho, Mayo all of them- forgetting that the bloodshed and strife is real and disgusting. Maybe the comments can’t really be more than they are - if the readers actually try to make connections and pool their knowledge to figure things out - like they used to do in the old Corum - you get all the way to… a lawsuit against BB and shutdown. Or maybe worse.

ReplyDeleteFor those of you that don’t know me, I have been around Borderland Beat from nearly the beginning, more often than not quietly doing my thing in the background or on the forum that was once a part of this website. As 15 years is approaching, I have seen many people come and go over the years.
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree with the points that J made. We are all volunteers, we receive no financial compensation for our articles, ultimately it can be looked at as a shared hobby. From an outside perspective it may look easy but from my point of view those of you that want to criticize Sol as a copy and paste writer that uses articles written in Spanish fail to take into consideration how much time and effort that takes. Love him or hate him, on any given day Sol was dedicating multiple hours to Borderland Beat, time he could spend doing other things in life.
Those of you seeking the “truth” are searching for something that doesn’t exist. There’s no grand conspiracy theory, Sol decided to leave for his own reasons. I, along with others at Borderland Beat, continue to stay in touch with him as there is an open line of communication. This website is greater than any one person yet big personalities like Sol are particularly noted.
