The former director of the Cancun jail, Fermin Cortes Burgos, was executed this Monday in Chetumal, by hired killers who opened fire on him.
The homicide took place near the Naval Zone when the former official was riding a motorcycle.
According to the videos released, it can be seen how Cortés Burgos lost control, skidded and crashed into a cab after being wounded by the burst of gunfire.
Cortés Burgos, with a career within the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), served as director of the Cancún prison during the six-year term of then Governor Carlos Joaquín González.
He was currently serving as an advisor to the state's Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC).
The execution was reportedly carried out by hitmen from the Caborca cartel under the orders of "Kike" alias 'LMV'. The victim had already received several threats and was accused of having a Facebook page that publishes information about criminal groups in Chetumal.
The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) informed that it had initiated an investigation to clarify the facts, while specialized experts went to the scene to gather evidence to support the investigation.
The institution confirmed that the victim was an active member of the Secretariat of Citizen Security.
The incident occurred at the same time as the arrival of an average of 200 elements of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) to Chetumal, to reinforce security in the capital, which in the last few days has seen an increase in violent acts, threats and homicides.
Along with the military, an EC225 helicopter from the Mexican Air Force was also received to strengthen operations against organized crime through ground incursions and deterrents in rural communities with high crime rates in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.

Flanked by the head of the SSC, Julio Cesar Gomez, the official pointed out in the press conference that she and other officials gave on the island, that the same situation has been detected in Chetumal; that is to say, that they begin with the dissemination of threatening messages and alerts that call on the population not to go out.
"We do not have any Code Red in Chetumal at this moment", she clarified, when interviewed after the meeting of the Security and Justice Round Table, in which "strategic actions implemented in the construction of peace and security" were announced, attended by more than 40 businessmen from the tourism industry.
There, it was said that 252 surveillance cameras will be installed, representing an increase of 510 percent and the placement of 33 new intelligent monitoring points to strengthen security.

There are hundreds of "reasons" commanders are killed, sometimes just for doing their job when their bosses have taken money on the understanding they won't. Anyway, I am literally driving through Sonoyta in Sonora and there is a huge presence of local policia (more than I have ever seen before). There's also 2 dozen military officers at a set up road block at the edge of town, right at the highway that takes you straight to Puerto Peñasco. In Peñasco a few days ago their were a half dozen military in front of a building on alert. My guess is some kind of fit is getting ready to hit the shan. 😉
