On Monday, March 11, Jaime Barrera, a journalist from Jalisco, was reported missing, as announced by his daughter, Itzul Barrera, a Morena national advisor. It was later announced that he had been deprived of his freedom.

Itzu Barrera announced the disappearance through a publication on X, formerly Twitter, and at the same time asked for support to locate her father, for which she published an image of the journalist accompanied by a telephone number.

Itzul Barrera on X "My dad, the best journalist in this state.

He is missing. I need you to please help us find him.

Help us get to him, please spread the word."

The Governor of Jalisco, that same day, assured that the authorities were already looking for Jaime Barrera.

Today, March 12, the Attorney General of Jalisco, Luis Joaquín Méndez Ruiz, confirmed that the journalist had been violently deprived of his freedom.

According to the prosecutor, what is known so far is that Jaime Barrera left yesterday from the radio station for which he currently works, in the Jardines de San Ignacio neighborhood in Zapopan, at around 2 p.m. towards his vehicle, and that is when the deprivation of liberty took place, although this is the first line of investigation, which is being verified.

It was also confirmed that he was deprived of his freedom by four men. So far, it is not known if Jaime Barrera has been previously threatened.

In addition, around noon today, the Jalisco prosecutor reported that a van allegedly involved in the disappearance of the journalist was found during a search operation in the Haciendas del Valle neighborhood.

Due to the above, Jaime Barrera's family together with the journalists' union called for a demonstration, which began at 5:00 p.m. this Tuesday.

In addition, the State Human Rights Commission of the State of Jalisco (CEDHJ) informed that it has opened an ex officio investigation into the disappearance of the journalist, and also requested the Undersecretary of Human Rights of the General Secretariat of Government, The Administrative Liaison of the Government of the State of Jalisco with the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, by the provisions of the state legislation on the matter, to analyze the relevance of requesting the intervention of the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.

In other words, it seeks to implement preventive and protective measures "that guarantee the life, integrity, freedom and security of the direct or indirect victims", informed the CEDHJ.

    1. Because he most likely reported something negative against CJNG.

    2. 440 not necessarily. Could be political retribution or just a plain ol kidnap for randsom because he's well off. It's not always cartel related. There are groups through out Mexico that strictly stick to kidnapping.

  2. A journalist getting killed hitting major news media is a horrible look … brings major spotlight and unwanted attention from the government.
