FDA Approves Opiod Overdose Medication Narcan Available Over the Counter

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Narcan, 4 milligrams (mg) naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray for over-the-counter (OTC), nonprescription, use – the first naloxone product approved for use without a prescription.

Naloxone is a medication that rapidly reverses the effects of opioid overdose and is the standard treatment for opioid overdose. The life-saving medication to reverse an opioid overdose is to be sold directly to consumers in places like drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores, and gas stations, as well as online.

Narcan has been widely used by first responders including paramedics and police officers when encountering an overdose victim. It has also become commonplace in schools, especially after the overdoses of several high school students in Los Angeles, California.

Drug overdose persists as a major public health issue in the United States, with more than 101,750 reported fatal overdoses occurring in the 12-month period ending in October 2022, primarily driven by synthetic opioids like illicit fentanyl.

“The FDA remains committed to addressing the evolving complexities of the overdose crisis. As part of this work, the agency has used its regulatory authority to facilitate greater access to naloxone by encouraging the development of and approving an over-the-counter naloxone product to address the dire public health need,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, M.D.

The Narcan nasal spray was first approved by the FDA in 2015 as a prescription drug. In accordance with a process to change the status of a drug from prescription to nonprescription, the manufacturer provided data demonstrating that the drug is safe and effective for use as directed in its proposed labeling.

  1. That’s the American answer for drug use, buy anti-narcotics medicine so you can get high again. American doesn’t know crap on how to solve its drug usage problems.

    1. Without the illegal drug trade many government employees would be out of a job though. Pretty sure they could stop it if they wanted to. They’re a little late on this narcan thing though. Everyone’s kind of already caught onto the whole thing about fent being laced into everything so people are a lot more cautious now and typically test their drugs unless full blown addicts.

    2. It's not that,it's the boneheaded fantasy focused only on the evil that is drugs and all the hyperbole associated with it.Not on the reality of WHY the demand for drugs and the constant reality of the availability of it despite the illegality.

  3. I’ve got these in my bag right now, they hand them out for free here in Australia. If you see someone that has “dropped” overdosed you spray up their nose and it brings them back. I’m a recovering addict and have had my life saved by this stuff. It’s been given out for free for last two years.you have to do a 5min course to establish how it’s used and what to do.
Hi guys! Andy from Australia hope your doing well!

    1. h Andy, i have a question for you - am i right in assuming that if you overdose alone, and have this available, that you would be too out of it to self-administer this?

as in, would you die even though you have the antidote available, just because you wouldn't be aware enough to use it?

    3. Yes, it's my first time hearing over 100,000. Of course I've heard of the opioid epidemic in the US, but never that figure. I'm English and even though it is reported here it is not headline news.

  5. What’s next, big American company working with Chinese chemical company making new addictive drugs then supply anti drug that they just made. Hmmmmm maybe it’s already made and we just don’t know it. It goes the saying “American big pharmaceutical cmpany” cooking out children’s rain for money.

  6. Instead of solving the opioid epidemic they push a drug to allow drug users to keep doing it. Yeah the u.s government sure cares about its citizens. Keep blaming Mexicans for your problems
