Tijuana, Baja California: Six Killed, No One Arrested

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

In just 24 hours, six premeditated homicides were recorded in different areas of Tijuana, in none of the cases are there any arrests reported.

At 5:40 a.m. on Friday, February 3, a male body was reported found on the Tijuana-Tecate Highway, next to the La Tentación Bar in the Maclovio Rojas community neighborhood of the Presa Rural district.

According to the preliminary report, through an anonymous tip, a citizen reported that he heard gunshots and observed three vehicles leaving the bar, a dark jeep and two sedans, also dark in color. He also said he saw the body of the man, approximately 35 and 40 years old, being taken to the side of the bar.

When the authorities arrived at the place they confirmed that the body of the victim, whose identity is unknown, was in the patio of the Car Wash San Judas. The body presented wounds in the cephalic region, thorax, abdomen and dorsal region.

Later, at 09:00 hours on the Rosarito-Tijuana Scenic Highway Km 14+500, in the La Joya subdivision of the Playas de Tijuana delegation, a deceased man between 30 and 35 years old was reported found halfway up the bridge, in the traffic lane.

The man's face was covered with gray adhesive tape and he was in a dorsal decubitus position and had a wound in the neck area.

Hours later, at 7:48 p.m. at the Tijuana General Hospital, the death of Hector, 49 years old, who was admitted on January 24 with injuries caused by a firearm in events that occurred in the El Florido first and second sections of the El Florido neighborhood, was reported.

In the soccer fields between Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez boulevard and Zarsamora street in the El Florido first section neighborhood at 22:13 hours of the night a male person was found injured by a firearm projectile, according to the reporting party those responsible fled towards Tamarindo street.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Juan Manuel, originally from Guanajuato.

The fifth murder took place at 00:22 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, on Hamburgo street in Altamira neighborhood in the Zona Centro district, where a citizen reported that gunshots were heard at the corner of the Claudia grocery store.

Upon arrival, authorities found a male victim with gunshot wounds. The man, between 20 and 25 years old, was pronounced dead by Red Cross paramedics.

Almost three hours later, at 02:58 in the 2000 corridor, specifically at the entrance to the Tomas Alva Edison industrial park in the Natura district, a municipal police unit that was on patrol in the area located a deceased person, who was wrapped in a blanket inside a black bag, the victim showed signs of violence.

It is estimated that in Tijuana there have been 16 premeditated homicides in February and 172 so far in 2023, however, the figure may not be accurate because the official report provided by the Attorney General's Office of Baja California did not present the number of homicides in the month and year.

    2. Too many. Tijuana has been taken over by criminals and it’s sad. It would actually better things if just one big group controlled all of TJ and made strict rules. I don’t think things will change. I think it will continue to be like this for many more decades.

    1. It’s actually a lot more than 2,000 a year but the government won’t admit anything more than around 2k / year for homicides
