They're Hunting Down Someone in Culiacán, Possibly El Nini

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

They're hunting down someone in Culiacán. Just days after Ovidio was captured, there was a large-scale military operation in the city and it is unclear which cartel figure authorities were targeting - or if they managed to arrest them.

Saturday Night Operation

On the night of January 7, 2023, two days after the capture of Ovidio Guzman, a military helicopter circled a neighborhood in the city of Culiacán.

Eerily, the helicopter utilized no lights, so residents could barely see it as it hovered above in the night sky, but the sound of it was unmistakable. News outlet Punto MX writes that the helicopter remained circling for over 40 minutes and that it was being used “in support of a ground operation”.

Videos from locals, which can be seen below, depict the large convoy of military vehicles which rolled into the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood of Culiacán at approximately 9:00 pm.

What exactly soldiers did within the neighborhood is not clear. El Siglo de Durango writes simply that “federal forces and elements of the State Preventive Police deployed an operation in several streets in Hidalgo.”

In a video uploaded by Periódico Vivavoz, a man with a gun is seeming aiming up in the air, at the helicopter from a rooftop in the area.

At approximately 10:24 pm, Sinaloa’s Head of Public Security, Cristóbal Castañeda tweeted out that:

“At this time, authorities from the three levels of government are carrying out an operation in the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood in Culiacán.

We ask you not to create misinformation.”

During this operation there were an exchange of shots between authorities and cartel hitmen. UniRadioInforma describes this by writing “continuous firearm shots were reported.” Some of these gunshots can be heard in the video filmed by a local, embedded below.

A 84-year-old man, named Isidro "N", who was on Mariano Escobedo street was hit by a bullet. Army personnel escorted him to a nearby hospital where he died hours later from the gunshot wound.

The exact manner in which this man was hit has not been disclosed.

The operation continued past midnight, and at 12:08 AM, the Head of Public Security tweeted out that “As a follow up, it should be noted that, to date, no person has been detained, nor have any body parts been found. We invite you not to spread misinformation.”

The operation seemingly ended unsuccessfully and the soldiers were gone by morning.

Who Were They After?

An article written by the journalist Carlos Velázquez, which was printed by the publications El Financiero, Nacion 321, Novedades de Tabasco, Guardia Nocturna, and Lado, claims that the January 7th operation “sought to arrest Néstor Isidro García, El Nini.”

It should be noted, however, that the writer Velázquez, made no reference to having spoken to sources in law enforcement or the military, nor were there even mentions of speaking to locals in the article. He offers no reasoning for claiming the operation was targeting El Nini.

Meanwhile Hache News, a relatively unknown Twitter account, claims it was to capture Ivan.

  1. Not possibly after el Nini. For sure they are after el Nini. Nini is a bad hombre and Mexico wants his ass. Se busca vivo o muerto. No como al Ratón 🐭 que lo querían vivo. By the way. People around Ovidios hose were complaining that military attacked the house with kids inside it is funny because the criminals know they are targets and decided to have children among armed sicarios. Also criminals don’t care about innocent town’s people when they steal vehicles to burn to create blockades.

  3. Ivan wouldn't be in Culiacan days after his brothers capture, surely? Hope it is Nini, hope they get him too. Nice one Hearst.

You stay still. If He was in Culican when they got his Brother than it might be who they where after.

    2. Yeah, that's true. I suppose they could have been in Culiacan at the same time and Ivan was unable to leave, but it just doesn't sound likely. Maybe they are closer than I realised, don't know much about those boys tbh.

    1. 10:57 guacamole hackers leaked data dumps that implicitly frame American and Mexican politicians in a hit rich pay to play power scheme that we call the drug war...

Everyone is cleaning 🧼 cartels, politicians, police, military

That no no money is everywhere and the real puppet masters aren't about to get caught

Besides, this is internal in Mexico and does not involve the USA or it's federal executive agencies.....

Maybe someone put fentanyl and kerosene in the Presidential Crack rocks in DC and got in trouble???

But I think this is more the Mexican government and the spectacular work of the Marina and supporting agencies to combat terrorism and narco-trafficking and stop the fent for real...

They don't want that shit either, and trust me they're selling fent in Culiacan too

SEDENA has been in Culiacan for seven or eight years now trying to get the situation under control. They have learned a lot over the years and are becoming more effective. It's encouraging that municipal and state police are participating in the operation. SEDENA must have confidence in their abilities and honesty.
Sinaloa is probably the hardest state for an honest cop to survive in and Culiacan is probably the hardest city. It's undeniable that CDS has state and municipal police on their payroll, but there is a good chance that the majority of the police are honest. I think we are finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel for Culiacan. It's only a matter of time before the government is in full control of Culiacan and residents aren't living under the thumbs of the narcos.

    4. @Detroit hey, thanks for the positive encouraging mindset. You have such a beautiful Aura

Check it out, what is everyone in Culiacan is in a Chapitos cult/ criminal enterprise and they all make fentanyl together to kill you

    5. For CDS, it’s better for business if the “more” violent leaders are gone, leaving leaders who are more business oriented and experienced around. Yes Mayo is in Zac fighting Mencho but it’s another cartel as opposed to different factions fighting each other in the same group. Remember when M1(Manuel Torres Felix) got way too violent and fucked up heating up all of the plazas. They let the army go after him. Mind you he went out in a blaze of glory in which most other bosses don’t. Like I said, it’s a better business decision on their part. That’s if MZ gave him up. Most likely it was the Government sending a message right before Bidens visit, to try to make the govt look better after letting him go the first time.

  11. Hey HEARST, off-topic question: you mentioned a part 2 to the Zetas series that you have been working on with MX. I've been wondering, is it still in the works or just on the backburn for a bit since we've been having big news recently

    ReplyDelete

    1. It'll remain on the back burner until news slows down.

I personally prefer to write about news rather than history - especially when it comes to topics like Zetas which have been written about extensively before. But thanks for asking. I'll keep it in mind since there's still interest.

    2. I can imagine it taking a lot more effort. The extensive coverage of what's happening now is great to see, thanks!

Such losses would damage US global standing for many years ," the report said.

In most scenarios, the US Navy loses two aircraft carriers and 10 to 20 large surface ships. About 23,200 American soldiers will be killed in three weeks of war.

  22. Remember how they hunted down Pancho Chimal and Güero Ranas after they ambushed the military convoy that was transporting “Bryan” to the hospital?……. That is exactly what they seem to be doing now vs El Nini. That man is going to get killed, soon. The military want him, because of the soldiers that got ambushed and killed last Thursday. They blame him.

This is officially the begging of the hunt. Now that Ovidio’s off the table there is only $15 million USD remaining bounty for all the Chapitos.

Ovidio would have made the total reward for all brothers Los Chapitos was around $20 million US from DoJ DEA and I believe Biden has additionally targeted Los Chapitos and has increased or offered an additional bounty for their captures.

Sucks to be a Guzman right now.
