Blast From The Past: Police Dismantle Record Number Of Meth Labs

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

Police are very concerned about the rise of crystal meth. A record number of labs have been dismantled this year, and fronts of the notorious Mexican Sinaloa cartel have visited the Netherlands.

Dutch synthetic drug criminals are making inroads into the world trade in crystal meth. For the past year and a half, they have been converting their labs to produce the highly addictive - and lucrative - drug. While nine crystal meth labs were busted last year, sixteen were busted in the first half of 2020, plus two more in July and August.

Presumably they work together with Mexican cartels, according to a tip the police received from Mexican investigative agencies. Two leaders of the Sinaloa cartel allegedly visited the Netherlands with tourist visas last summer.

Police are linking this to crystal meth and have put a nationwide team of 100 detectives on the case. "If you let this run its course, the Netherlands could just become one of the largest meth-producing countries in the world," said Andy Kraag, head of the national criminal investigation department.

Competition

"There could then be competition with Mexico, where the cartels are known to be extremely violent. It is our top priority to prevent that kind of violence, intimidation and liquidations."

Pill farmers from the Netherlands already regularly join forces with Mexicans, global market leaders in crystal meth. Drugs made in Mexico undergo a final production step in the Netherlands: crystallization. Mexican lab technicians are flown in for their expertise, and Dutch criminals are making the switch now that there is less to be earned from trafficking xtc or speed. Crystal meth quickly earns ten times as much in countries like Australia.

  1. @Sol interesting article, thanks

I disagree though. The global demand for MDMA has not diminished at all, but grown. The capabilities for the Netherlands to supply the entire planet with MDMA is limited.

Cocaine use in EU and Russia was not prevalent in the earlier 2000s but now more than ever.

Now, the use of meth in the Netherlands and Germany has always been around but not as popular as regular amphetamine sulfate and other phenethylamines, tryptamines, plant based psychedelics, and substituted cathinones.

People who think that meth and fentanyl are more in demand are sheep. These chemicals are just easier to produce and cheaper to manufacture.

Cocaine, heroin, amphetamine, MDMA/MDA/MDEA, mescaline, etc. are harder to produce, more labor intensive, and more costly.

    1. To add to this, The federal mandatory minimums for Meth is similar to the old crack laws. 5 grams or more of highly pure Meth is an automatic 5 years at minimum. Over 50 grams is 10 years at minimum. The younger generation will see the toll Meth has on the body and will avoid this drug, similar to crack. Heroin addiction was the main problem from early 2000’s til now (Pill over prescription started this).Cocaine and Shrooms are once again moving up in popularity as history shall repeat itself. In 20 years it will switch again as the next generation will see the harm Coke does and go to Heroin and whatever else we create. Weed will never change as legalization is 5 years or less away.

  3. It is expensive here in Australia. It’s $100 for .1 of a gram. So $1000 a gram if you break it up into points. Lots of disposable income with high demand and the low inconsistent supply makes it the NO.1 target for imports in terms of profit.
