Three-Year-Old Child Hurt During Battle Between Tropa del Infierno and the Army in Nuevo Laredo, Tamps

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Army soldiers battled against alleged Cartel del Noreste (CDN) hitmen from Tropa  del Infierno in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. During the initial gunfire, a stray bullet injured a three year old boy who was at an outdoor marketplace with his parents.

The Battle

At approximately 3:20 pm on October 31, 2022, soldiers from the Army (SEDENA) spotted a convoy of vehicles driven by armed men near an open marketplace in the Hacienda Longoria neighborhood of Nuevo Laredo. This neighborhood is located in the northwestern section of the city, as marked on the map below.

According to Excelsior newspaper, the fight began when the hitmen, in turn, spotted the soldiers and opened fire on them from inside their vehicles. The soldiers repelled the attack and two sides traded bullets near the market, which was full of civilians at the time.

Two young parents grabbed their three-year-old son in their arms and ran towards a wall for cover. Once behind the wall, they noticed that their son was bleeding. The child had been hit by a stray bullet in his right leg during the first volley of shots. His parents rushed him to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

The bursts of gunfire were heavy and could be heard throughout other sections of the city. Residents from the neighborhoods of Militar, Buena Vista, Nueva Era, and La Palacios reported the sound either to the emergency phone line or to social media.

Below are videos locals posted online in which the gunfire can be heard.

At a certain point, the hitmen tried to flee the area, speeding away inside their vehicles; however the soldiers gave chase and followed them east to the Palacios neighborhood.

The soldiers managed to stop two of their vehicles, both Tahoe SUVs, and another gun battle broke out, this one leaving four hitmen dead. The four dead hitmen - three male, one female - were allegedly found dressed in tactical gear.

Multiple pickup trucks driven by hitmen managed to escape the area while the soldiers were preoccupied with the hitmen inside the SUVs.

Official news sources such as Excelsior and Linea Directa do not name which cartel group the hitmen belong to however blogs such as Frontera Al Rojo Vivo and Twitter accounts such as La Voz Del Pueblo allege it was hitmen from the Northeast cartel (Cártel del Noreste, CDN) subgroup Tropa del Infierno, or the Troops from Hell.

The allegations seem quite plausible because CDN is believed to be the dominant cartel force in the city and hitmen confirmed to be from Tropa del Infierno were battling soldiers in Nuevo Laredo a few months ago, in July 2022 as covered by Sol Prendido

The blog Frontera Al Rojo Vivo tells a slightly different version of the events than Excelsior, however. They allege that the Army soldiers involved were from the special forces division Dragones Urbanos and doing ground reconnaissance on the Nueva Era neighborhood.

In this version, a leadership figure within Tropa del Infierno with the alias “El Milo” had planned to ambush the Army soldiers that afternoon near the market, rather than the hitmen merely spotted them and responded.

They also allege that the hitmen inside the two SUVs were told to lure the soldiers into a gun battle in order to cover the escape of El Milo and his bodyguards however their attempt failed and Milo was still killed by the soldiers.

There are currently no photos depicting El Milo online although some may emerge in the coming days.

  3. If the FARV version is correct and CDN intentionally ambushed SEDENA at the marketplace, it sounds as if CDN's intent was to create civilian casualties. Good work by SEDENA repelling the attack and bringing these clowns to justice in Satan's courtroom. It sounds like one tough 3 year-old. Sign him up with the Dragones Urbanos.
