DEA Lab Testing Reveals 60% of Fentanyl Laced Counterfeit Pills Contain Lethal Amounts

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is alerting the public of a sharp nationwide increase in the lethality of fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills.

The DEA Laboratory has found that of the fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills analyzed in 2022, six out of ten now contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. This is an increase from the DEA’s previous announcement in 2021 that four out of ten fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills were found to contain a potentially lethal dose.

“More than half of the fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills being trafficked in communities across the country now contain a potentially deadly dose of fentanyl. This marks a dramatic increase – from four out of ten to six out of ten – in the number of pills that can kill,” said Administrator Anne Milgram. “These pills are being mass-produced by the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Cartel in Mexico. Never take a pill that wasn’t prescribed directly to you. Never take a pill from a friend. Never take a pill bought on social media. Just one pill is dangerous and one pill can kill.”

Last year, the DEA issued a Public Safety Alert on the widespread drug trafficking of fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills in American communities. These pills are largely made by two Mexican drug cartels, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco (CJNG) Cartel, to look identical to real prescription medications, including OxyContin®, Percocet®, and Xanax®, and they are often deadly. In 2021, the DEA seized more than 20.4 million fake prescription pills. Earlier this year, the DEA conducted a nationwide operational surge to target the trafficking of fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills and, in just over three months, seized 10.2 million fake pills in all 50 states. Through its One Pill Can Kill campaign, the DEA is working to alert the American public of the dangers of fake prescription pills.

Fentanyl remains the deadliest drug threat facing this country. It is a highly addictive synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Just two milligrams of fentanyl, the small amount that fits on the tip of a pencil, is considered a potentially deadly dose. According to the CDC, 107,622 Americans died of drug poisoning in 2021, with 66 percent of those deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco Cartel in Mexico, using chemicals largely sourced from China, are primarily responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl that is being trafficked in communities across the United States.

  1. The worse element on the fentanyl epidemic is: the victims trust their friends who only want their money.

  2. Dont get why dealers risk those customers so much... Not even in most places in Mexico, except where CDS runs tienditas. Killing your own customers is bad for business.

    1. They dont sell that shit in the tienditas here in Culiacan foo. In tijuana they do. Idk about mexicali. But guasave, mazatlan, and culiacan the shit they sell the most is meth. That shit is rampant. I was outside one of their stores and there was doctor, nurses, college kids, and all the way down to middle school kids buying that crap. That shit has become a problem here. The coke they sell is garbage. Super garbage.

    2. 3:14 Not in Culiacan, but how about Sonora and other towns?... Same with meth...

In Juarez, Cartel only allows cocaine and marijane... heroin and other drugs on a smaller scale in specific tienditas. But meth (crico), piedra, tachas, and fent is a CDS business.

    3. Juarez sells mostly good quality cocaine and lavada.

    5. 4:45; Yes - about the same as the US inner city drug markets; there’s 100 ready to sling on the corner seeking the possibility of rising up in the ranks.

    6. I agree with 3:14 but in Mazatlan. They’ve had the cristal on the streets for 10+ years that the homeless and prostitutes have long used. Unfortunately it replaced glue with homeless kids and beggars a long time ago; pero no hay fent peddled on the streets from Nayarit to Culiacán b/c I ask what my window washers poison of choice is when I pay them and they all say cristal o glue.

It will be great to sue , everyone is suing each other. ALMO is not doing a good job, he went after Sinaloa drug labs in the beginning, but now labs are back and running.

      Delete
    3. 6:58 Then ask them to sue, what are they waiting for? ☺
AMLO is doing great. Impossible to destroy every single improvised lab they make in hours. But keep whining!

    5. The funny thing is that ALMO s speechwriter, wrote when ALMO retires from being president, he will live off his pension. he did not mention the Daily bribes that come in, so cartels can continue to do business. While the government looks the other way. So of course he will have lots of money.

  4. I call this bull shit, if it was true just imagine how many more deaths there would be, its like when the drug war started and the Regan was exagerating about marijuana, i would say about 5% or less of the fent is deadly, but to be honest i would never take that chance, why? Cause if you do a little be of math that means that if you do this drug 100 times you will die for sure, 60% its like saying more than half of the users are already dead, like saying you can do it only once and the second time you will die for sure, does not add up

    1. You need to learn to read articles and not headlines son! I suspect they’re correct but notice there is no definition as deadly for…50 kilos user, 75 kilo users etc.

      Delete
    2. 6:59 and you need to learn some math bra

      Delete
    3. 6:59 i did read the article, 20.4 million pills seized, 6 out of 10 of them can kill, thats 12.24 million out of the 20.4 seized pills that can kill a person, imagine how many more pills went trough and sold and used? Do we have at least 12 million deaths? To put it in perspective i bet more than 100 million pills have gotten trough, been sold and used and do we at least have 60 million deaths? Now you get why i call their percentage bull shit? Maybe they got a bad bage and are going with it but there is just no way 60% of them are deadly like they want to make it look, like i said probably about 5% or less are really dangerous, still wouldnt want to play with those odds

      Delete
    4. 6:18 don't micromanage the pills, manage the death toll.

    5. First of all there’s a little thing called TOLERANCE and secondly, “lethal doses” aren’t always lethal for everyone, even without tolerance. Plenty of people will die before the LD50 rate and plenty will take more than the LD50 rate and live.

      Delete
    6. 12:58 Sir your favorite cartel is selling poison, how do you feel about it?

      Delete
    7. 6:18 Are you assuming everyone only takes one pill? You probably have users who, at this point have taken hundreds of them over the past year or two.

      Delete
    8. 06:13 I think you're missing the point. The DEA is testing seized pills.

2021 an average of 4 out of 10 pills tested had a lethal dose of fentanyl (~ approximately 2mg or more and you die).

The opium poppy is an evolution product that provide pain relief without the lethality of synthetics like fentanyl

Now, the current pills in the streets are testing at 6 out of 10 pills are containing a lethal dose.

So, if you get pills out the streets instead of buying them at Walmart there is pretty much a 60% chance you will be dead after injection.

Fentanyl can be manufactured for less than 500$ per kilo and sells for $50K pure in the USA.

1 kilo will yield over. Million dollars US profit when broken down into pills

    9. 8:36 Yes to most of that and 2mg IS the ‘estimated LD50’ in humans but it doesn’t mean by principle you are automatically dead at 2mg or that many people can’t die before that. LD50 is simply the amount you have to give each subject to kill half of them. So it doesn’t mean you have a 60% chance of dying it means that there’s a 60% chance that it will contain more than the estimated LD50 amount in humans. But all LD50 rates in humans are estimated, because they have to be. You obviously can’t literally test something like that unless it’s on rats or something.

As for opium not providing the ‘lethality of synthetics’ lol.. I’m not even sure what that’s supposed to mean. There’s nothing wrong with “synthetics” like hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, etc. Synthetic isn’t what’s the problem. The problem is that fentanyl and its analogues (chemical cousins) are active in MICROGRAMS instead of milligrams. And the fentanyl-like group of chemicals also just happens to have a propensity for abnormal depression of the respiratory system and its functions relative to level of euphoria achieved. Fentanyl is the problem, not synthetics. Just like amphetamine is perfectly acceptable and feasible despite being no less ‘synthetic’ than methamphetamine. Cartels are just idiots. Their problem isn’t leaning too heavily into synthetics, the problem is that they’re leaning into the worst kinds of synthetics. Plus I may be wrong on this but I don’t think all of opium’s alkaloids are so “gentle” even for opiates. Thebaine for example I believe can be kind of harsh and fairly toxic.
