Mexico's Roman Catholic Church Suspends Priest Who Advised Carrying Guns

Mexico’s Roman Catholic Church has suspended a controversial priest who has advised parishioners to carry guns to fight off drug cartels.

Better known as “Father Pistolas,” Rev. Alfredo Gallegos is a priest in the violence-plagued western state of Michoacan who has himself sometimes carried a weapon. A circular from the Archdiocese of Morelia, the state capital, instructed other priests not to allow the Rev. Gallegos to celebrate Mass.

While the archdiocese did not answer phone calls seeking to confirm the order, a priest in a neighboring diocese who was not authorized to be quoted by name confirmed the authenticity of the order Wednesday. The order, dated Sept. 21, did not specify a reason for the indefinite suspension imposed earlier that month, saying only that Gallegos “had been admonished on several occasions” for something.

Even for Michoacan, it was surprising when the Rev. Gallegos called from the pulpit in 2021 for parishioners to arm themselves against warring drug gangs. “The cartel gunmen come, they take the livestock, they screw your wife and daughter, and you do nothing,” the Rev. Alfredo Gallegos said in a sermon. ”Well, get yourself a gun, the government can go to hell.”\

“We have to defend our lives,” Gallegos continued.

Mexican law forbids most civilians from owning almost all firearms, except for extremely low-caliber hunting rifles or shotguns. But Michoacan has a history of armed civilian “self-defense” vigilante militia movements dating from 2013 and 2014. Back then vigilantes managed to chase the dominant Knights Templar cartel out, but rival cartels like the Viagras and the Jalisco cartel have moved in. Kidnappings, killings, and shootings have prompted thousands to flee their homes.

At the time, Gallegos was backed by some fellow Roman Catholic clergy. The Rev. Gregorio López, a priest known for once wearing a flak vest while celebrating Mass, has spent the last few years running shelters for people who have fled their homes due to violence. He has also tried to help get asylum or refugee status for Michoacan residents in the United States.

López called Gallegos’ sermon “the cry of the people.” “He is trying to be the voice of the people, and that is the feeling of the community, that they should be armed,” said López, who served as a sort of spiritual adviser for some of the self-defense groups in 2014.

The church’s Catholic Multimedia Center said seven priests have been slain during the current administration, which took office in December 2018, and at least two dozen in the six years of the previous president.

  2. Mexico needs more brave priests like Padre Alfredo and courageous citizens like Don Alejo. We all need to stand with Padre Alfredo on this one. I will be writing a letter to the diocese.

    1. Even the church prohibits honest hard working citizens and priest from carrying guns. In other words lots of innocents will continue to die, without defending themselves.

    2. Weapons is not cure but a causal factor in generating violence.

The Catholic Church recognizes a just war for self defense. An obvious corollary is defense of your home and family. It's about time these "Catholics" abide by Catholic principles. We all need to stand behind Padre Alfredo. He has sworn to uphold Catholic principles and this is what he is doing.

I was born in Mexico and went to church as a kid, I really dislike that religion

I'm not atheist but religion is onother form stupidity. It's like believing in a government entity that are all in the stealing money business.
Pan, pri. Morena are all places of sh!t sell out crooks.

I'm with this brave priest, I passed through that area a few years ago in his ranch. I should have gone to church, would have been a great experience.
This priest doesn't look like the rest of the pedophile nasty lying Catholic priest.

  8. Any evil ever committed by someone in the church were just wolves in sheep’s clothing and not real priest or lay person.
The Spaniards who used the Word to commit heinous acts on the Indigenous doesn’t make the Church bad or it’s teachings false it’s just bad people using it to their advantage to fool others.
Also, the Spaniards and the rest of the European colonizers were also pagan at one point in history.

  10. The archdiocese will stand up for and protect pedophile priests, but they admonished a priest that has his congregation’s safety at heart. They are the same group that started the Crusades, and made their victims choose to convert to their foreign religion, or burn. Organized religion is the most evil and hypocritical society I the world.

  13. That's the Catholic church you're all wrapped in down to South America. What i mean is that from a little space somewhere in Italy behind a wall even there Jesus does not exist. I mean look at you and ask yourself as you do the sign of the cross, look up, from upon knees and say. What prayer are they talking about? What is it this Jesus they speak about who they cannot themselves comprehend after Jesus being born 2022yrs 10 months and 24hours and 32 minutes. Thank you for this Jesus you Roman motherfucker. Ima lay'em down for your ass.
