Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sánchez, alias "El Coss" or "XX" and 51-year-old former Gulf Cartel leader, was sentenced to life in prison in the United States this Thursday, September 15, amid Mexican Independence Day celebrations.

The former Gulf Cartel leader, better known as "El Coss," was arrested by Mexican authorities in 2012 in Tamaulipas, as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) offered five million dollars for information leading to his capture.

It was not until 2015 that he was extradited to the United States, where he was tried for drug trafficking.

In 2017 he was convicted of conspiracy in a Texas federal court for possessing, with intent to distribute, 10 tons of cocaine and 140 tons of marijuana.

El Coss" was also charged with two counts of assaulting a federal agent and a US DEA agent in 1999 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, but the agents were released by the criminal group.

In March 2000, the first of two indictments against him was filed in a federal court in Brownsville.

"El Coss" must return 5 million dollars for his drug trafficking operations.
According to the first reports, "El Coss" will have to return US $5 million for his drug trafficking operations to the United States.

"El Coss" was not the first leader of the Gulf Cartel, his predecessor, Osiel Cardenas Guillen was in charge when Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez was right behind him, however, due to the arrest of his former boss, the also named "Dos Equis" took his place in 2003.

For now, "El Coss" will remain in custody pending his transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons where his future will be determined and where he will spend his life sentence.

Although since 2018 "El Coss" had already pleaded guilty for drug trafficking, but until September 15, 2022 he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

  1. El Coss was the right-hand for Sr. Osiel Cardenas, and took over along with Tony Tormenta, Lazcano, after the arrest his boss Sr. O

After the death of Tony Tormenta in November 2010, El Coss and Samuel Flores Borrego "M3" basically became bosses of the Gulf Cartel, but we can all agree that M3 overshadowed El Coss. El Coss ordered his former lieutenant R1 who was now right hand of M3 in Reynosa to be killed. The rest is history.....

    1. Wrong, Zs negotiated M3 death because of el condors murder. Metro 3 killed him personally, zetas asked him to turn himself in he refused, the rest is black water.

    4. What happened to R1 Juan Reyes? I read some post that say he is alive and others say he is dead but no proof. The US still shows R1 Juan Reyes as alive and wanted? Does anyone know if he is still alive? I would love to see a new BB article about R1 is anyone has info on him and would be willing to write it

  4. He spent four years in custody since his plea. I wonder what all he gave up and who he gave up. Bosses snitching on their underlings for leniency is pure BS. If he walks in ten years and joins the growing list of narcos living in Atherton, I'm going to be pissed.

    1. Unless prosecuctors filed a rule 35b motion he will die in prison. I believe the prosecutors have 120 days, though it can be sealed and later acted on (Javier Arellano-Felix had a sealed rule 35b for 6 years untill he got a reduction from life)

    2. Don’t be surprised. This guy is a big fish. What sucks for him is he may not have relevant information of the CDG anymore. That’s the beauty of getting arrested early — you can snitch and get leniency bc you info is relevant.

    3. There is absolutely no beauty getting arrested PERIOD!! Obviously you’ve never been arrested dumb ass.

    4. How can you snitch when you're not offended a deal?

You would be amazed at how many people snitch when they are arrested by the police. They should keep their mouths shut and use their knowledge of criminal activities to reduce their sentence, but many don't.
There's something in human nature where they try to avoid unpleasant consequences. There is also something in human nature where they feel that by ingratiating themselves with the police that things will go easier for them. The police are used to this and take advantage of this human weakness. Whenever the police gets someone who is willing to volunteer information they always encourage them to talk. In the majority of cases where someone cooperates with the police, they are volunteering information of their own free will, not as part of a deal.

Well thank you Detroit, tonight we celebrate our Independence, by firing Ak-47s, 50 caliber machine guns.

    8. @Detroit, you didn't answer my question. How can someone snitch when you're not offered a deal? You can provide all the info you want but if the government doesn't want to hear it the it has no legal bearing..

    1. Osiel cooperated heavily and was caught way earlier. Sang first so got to get out earlier. Pretty much a lot of the OG Zetas members were unknown prior to him collaborating. If he returns to Mexico there will be a huge target on his back.

    2. Yeah that’s a crazy story I read where they were riding around in matamoros it was an informant , fbi, and dea. They pull up and box them in trying to make them give up informant have a real Mexican standoff. That’s crazy. But they let them go.

  6. That 1999 standoff with US feds in Matamoros changed the fate of the Gulf Cartel. That was Osiel’s biggest mistake. Many of those involved were ex municipales and state police. That was when Osiel got back to Matamoros after being in Miguel Aleman, where the first Zetas circle started with Zefe and Z1. This capture is the chatter of town in Matamoros this morning. Thank you, BB & Ivan. - MX
