SEMAR Helicopters Spotted in Huatabampo, Sonora, Rumors That CDS El Pirata Was Arrested

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Special Forces SEMAR soldiers and at least two military helicopters were spotted carrying out an operation near a private residence in Huatabampo municipality, Sonora. It is being rumored on social media that Los Salazar leader Jesús Francisco Sarrazín Lohr, alias “El Pirata”, was arrested during the operation.

The SEMAR Operation

During the afternoon of July 26, 2022, a number of residents of Huatabampo municipality spotted two SEMAR helicopters maneuvering in an operation nearby. Huatabampo municipality is the most southern municipality within the state of Sonora and borders with the state of Sinaloa.

It is believed that this area, along with Álamos and Navojoa, are under the control of the Sinaloa Cartel subgroup Los Salazar, who are Chapitos aligned.

Multiple residents of Huatabampo captured and uploaded footage on their smartphones of the helicopters flying low and landing in the small coastal town of Huatabampito near a private residence.

Diario Nueva Expresión writes that “a strong ground-air operation implemented by the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR)” and “they have not yet confirmed the reason for the deployment.” Social media account El Ojo writes “there are unofficial reports of the arrest of a person by the Navy this Tuesday afternoon in Huatabampito.”

Meanwhile another social media source Blanco y Negro Sonora writes “a group of Special Forces soldiers detained El Pirata, leader of a criminal group in the municipality of Huatabampo. His alleged arrest was during a quick operation, which would have been carried out without a single shot fired.” Huatabampo Y Alrededores and Sin Pelos en la Lengua reported similar rumors.

Some Background on El Pirata

About half a year ago, on December 7, 2021, a narco sign was hung in the city of Guaymas which exposed the full names and aliases of three Salazar lieutenants. The sign claimed the three men were the “main generators of violence in the state of Sonora.”

It is likely that Rafael Caro Quintero’s Caborca Cartel were the creators of this sign and it is also likely that it was created as an act of retribution for a Sinaloa Cartel sign which exposed the top Caborca Cartel leaders in a similar fashion earlier that month. For the full details on this sign and what we know about the three men named in the sign, please see this previous story

Jesús Francisco Sarrazín Lohr, alias “El Pirata”, a well-known Salazar operator with an established history in the region, was one of the men exposed in the sign. Not much news surrounding El Pirata has come out within the last few years but the sign seemingly confirms that he is still an active force, leading part of Los Salazar forces in the state of Sonora.

Some articles have described Pirata as a head of hitmen for the group, others write that he is in charge of managing day-to-day operations on behalf of the leader of Los Salazars, José Crispín Salazar Zamorano, alias Tío Pin (Uncle Pin), as well as its secondary leader Jesus Alfredo Salazar Ramírez, alias "El Muñeco", who is Tío Pin’s nephew and who still allegedly gives out orders from prison.

One of his narcocorridos, titled “El Pirata” from the artist Francisco Fourcade, includes the lyrics:

And in Huatabampo, with the gun in my waistband

I'm from the ranks of the people from Navojoa

I am Gente Nueva, let those scumbags know

I'm walking around with the support of El Senor

And they call me Pirata, I am of Salazars

[...]

Napoleon, let's go and do this, brother

[...]

I'm an armed man of the famous Muñeco.

We continue on 100% even though El Senor is in jail

Napoleon may refer to Salazar operative Sergio Alberto del Villar Suarez, alias “El Napoleon”, who was allegedly killed on August 4, 2019, although some on social media allege that was a different man.

The song also references the aforementioned second-in-command of Salazars, Jesús Alfredo Salazar Ramírez, alias "El Muñeco,” who has been in prison since 2012.

Pirata has a cousin named Edgar Alonso Villegas Sarrazín, alias “El H”, who reported under him. El H reportedly is in charge of organizing and planning out kidnappings and extortion collection. El H was killed inside a barbershop in July 2020.

Pirata was alleged to have ordered a kidnapping of a family which was unsuccessfully attempted on April 5, 2019.

It's worth noting that just recently a Salazar-associated leadership figure named Francisco Torres Carranza, alias “El Duranguillo”, was arrested in northern Sonora. El Duranguillo is notably the brother of the arrested Gente Nueva de Altar’s head of hitmen named Jose Bibiano Cabrera, alias “El Durango”.  Duranguillo was allegedly leading a part of Gente Nueva de Altar’s remaining forces at the time of his arrest, on July 2, 2022.

  6. Have you noticed that they are hitting CDS for many months, as you can see they have the military power to take down Cartels, yet they fully concentrate on this one.

    1. CDS is the only cartel left that was not hit for the previous twelve years prior to AMLOs administration. This is why Sinaloa grew so powerful for the last two Presidential administrations. No President arrested anybody of their leaders.

    2. When will they go for CJNG full throttle? They have created a lot of bloodshed.

    3. 9:05 its easier to fight a cartel that is scared to shoot back like cds

    4. They are hitting CDS affiliated groups in Sonora. Not Sinaloa. Major difference. My thought is that Sinaloa bosses are giving up people from Sonora in order to divert attention from themselves. As much as people like to say that los Salazar and other well established groups from Sonora are crucial to overall operations, in my opinion they are not. Someone else will be sent to replace them and business will go on as usual.

      Unless you mean his spirit.

    7. @1051 I know a guy who used to be a mid level trafficker in California .He got his meth from the templarios. He had a lot of family ties to tierra caliente, and always knew what was going on over there.one day “El mas loco” came up in conversation. I mentioned his death. He told me “ ese cabron no está muerto, ayi anda”. I took that comment with a grain of salt, as I do with with most things that people tell me. Sure enough, x amount of years later “el mas loco” died again. Point being, if a big Narcos death doesn’t go from hearsay to eventual consensus, then I don’t believe it.

    8. Here I thought it was Sinaloa labs that they were hitting hard, so it turns out to be Sonora. I learn something in here every day.

    9. I was told Chapitos want Los Salazeres out no more Chihuahuas running things & making a muck just look at how bad the infighting is getting. They want to replace Sonoras capos with people with direct contact to los Chapitos/Culiacán.

      Where have you been?
Mencho died many months ago lung issue and COVID. They had kept the hospital under wraps, to avoid the capture of his dead body, it was leaked and quickly covered up.You could imagine anyone that said the truth would be killed. I learned it from an uncle in Mexico, I won't mention his name or state, as don't want him harmed.

    11. 4:35 if its true they are gonna fail and its gonna be their demise, locals dont like taking orders from outsiders, specially if they (the locals) have been in the game for a while

    13. @731 I heard the opposite during my recent trip to Mexico. A family member informed me that he was staying in a Sierra town in Jalisco where he built his own hospital for treatment. Not discrediting your source or mine for that matter , but I’ll reiterate my original point. If it’s just hearsay and not general consensus, I’ll go with he’s still alive.

  9. Yes it’s true the government is hitting CDS, it’s because CDS is the biggest organization. Other smaller organizations like AFO, BLO and CJNG have nothing to hit. AFO and BLO have been out of the picture for a while, those days Mencho was the CDS gopher. Mencho was busy with his shoe shine box, washing cars and cleaning stables. Mencho had a dream of taking over but ended up kicking the bucket. The Mexican president is putting in work and getting a lot done.

It's good he is putting effort, but mainly concentrating on one group.
This came about the meeting he had 2 weeks ago with President Biden.
AMLO had received a memo from VP Harris on topics that were going to be covered(4 months in advance), so he started hitting a few Sinaloa labs in May, alot in June.
Biden wants AMLO to curb fentanyl from coming to USA.

    3. 11:16 they always hitt the cartel thats not gonna fight them back, the reason they didnt hitt cds back in the day is cause they had cjng (milenio) working along side, now the government is hitting cds cause theres a inside fight going on, but dont worry, once cjng starts splitting up the government will hitt them too, but as of right now cjng is the most solid cartel so they wont mess with them for the time been

    7. 9:21 yea he was a farmer, went to work for the Guadalajara cartel as a car washer for the big bosses, moved up to a sicario and finally a cartel boss, mencho went from police man to sicario to now the biggest boss in mexico right now

  10. Memos are still in Sonoyta or did they get ran out! Been yrs since hearing any real news regarding them folk

    1. My current understanding is Memos are basically absorbed within Salazars and no longer a relevant or distinct presence in their own right. The same goes for Paez Soto, who are absorbed within Caborca Cartel.
