Quintana Roo Health Department Worker Smuggled 200 Kilos Of Marijuana As Covid-19 Tests

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

On July 15th at 11:10 PM, the Mexican army stopped a driver of a state health services (SESA) vehicle who attempted to smuggle 200 kilos of marijuana towards the coastal city of Chetumal. The seizure was made in the González Ortega community of Othón P. Blanco municipality, where SEDENA agents were conducting routine patrols.

According to Periodistas Quintana Roo, when asked by agents what he was transporting, the driver, identified as Carlos J. M. P, responded that he was delivering Covid-19 tests. Noticing that he was nervous, the agents further questioned him and searched the vehicle. Hidden in the bed of the pickup under a tarp were 20 plastic wrapped cardboard barrels with 200 kilograms of marijuana.

The vehicle, a white 2011 Volkswagen Amarok pickup, has SESA’s logo and name printed on the side. A lookup of the vehicle's license plate, TA-3374-J, does not show up as reported stolen and matches the model and color of the vehicle photographed, meaning that this is an official state vehicle, not just disguised or stolen.

Citing an anonymous source, twitter government watchdog @VigiaCiudadano7 claimed that in the hours leading up to his arrest, the driver was in contact with high level government officials, and even called one as he was detained. This has not been confirmed.

In a press release posted on July 17, SESA rejected claims by the media that the driver has any connection to Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, the director of SESA, stating that the driver was a contractor hired for a period of three months. He has since been suspended.

The driver and the drugs have been handed over to the Quintana Roo Attorney General's office.
