CAF's El Pablito Executed in Tijuana

"HEARST" for Borderland Beat

The following is a direct translation of an article originally posted on June 9, 2022, by weekly magazine Zeta Tijuana

On the afternoon of Thursday, June 9, 2022, a former ministerial police officer named Próspero Medina Avilés, alias "El Pablito", was murdered near the Garita de Otay neighborhood in Tijuana.

The Moto-Execution

According to documents reviewed by ZETA, at around 6:28 pm on Industrial Boulevard, in front of Parque de la Amistad, a man driving a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck was injured by gunfire.

Tijuana Municipal Police and Red Cross paramedics arrived at the scene and confirmed that the victim was a male with multiple wounds, however by this time, the victim no longer had vital signs and was pronounced dead.

Photos appear to show the pickup truck crashed into another vehicle when the driver was shot.

Witnesses told the authorities that the pickup truck was circulating on the aforementioned road when people aboard a motorcycle pulled up to the victim's vehicle and shot him at point blank range.

Some Details about the Victim

Sources consulted by this weekly magazine revealed that the deceased was named Próspero Medina Avilés, alias "El Pablito", who was about 50 years old. He was a former ministerial police officer and allegedly a member of the Cártel Arellano Félix (CAF).

In 2001, Próspero Medina Avilés had an arrest warrant put out for him on charges of abuse of authority, and, in November 2006, he was suspected of having participated in an armed attack against municipal police officers.

His name appeared on narcomantas, one of which was hung on a bridge in Tijuana in February 2016, where alleged leaders of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) demanded that the now deceased and 13 other members of the CAF recognize them "... as partners and members of the plaza unless they wanted a new war.”
