The Cartel Connections to the Querétaro Soccer Riot (Updated)

"Itzli" and "HEARST" for Borderland Beat

A soccer match taking place in Querétaro is stopped due to violence between rival fans and in its wake rumors emerge of cartel rivalry being part of the trigger.

Querétaro vs. Atlas

Saturday evening, March 5, 2022. Among the games being held during Matchday 9 of the Mexican professional soccer league is Querétaro, hosting the match at their Corregidora Stadium, against Atlas. At the 29 minute mark Atlas, also known as Los Zorros, scores against the Gallos Blancos (White Roosters), as Querétaro is called.

The two teams have a bitter rivalry that dates back to April 29, 2007, when Querétaro found themselves needing a win on their final match of the season to avoid relegation, that is being demoted to the secondary league while the best team in the secondary league would take their place in the premier league the following season.

All Querétaro had to do was win the match against Atlas, who was hosting the game at their home stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, but that would not be the case. Following Querétaro’s defeat, their barra brava, a soccer fan organization, known as La Resistencia Albiazul clashed with Barra 51, the barra brava of Atlas, outside the stadium leaving several people injured.

Over the years violent confrontations between La Resistencia and Barra 51 would occur off and on, the latest of which had been in November 2021 when a Querétaro fan died in the fighting against Atlas fans in Guadalajara.

The risk of violence is such on March 5, 2022 that fans are separated in the stands by barbed wire fences and gates. At 7:24 PM, at the 60 minute mark, Atlas takes possession of the ball. Chaos erupts.

The following videos are all graphic in nature.

Two Teams, Two Cartel Connections

Over the years both of these soccer teams have been in the public spotlight due to alleged connections to cartel figures in Mexico.

Tirso Martínez Sánchez, alias “El Doctor”, a member of the Sinaloa Cartel who was arrested in 2014 and would go on to testify against Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, earned the alias “El Futbolista” due in part to his purchases of soccer teams, which he used to launder cartel money, as previously reported by Borderland Beat.

Among the teams he bought was La Piedad, in Michoacán, which he moved to Querétaro in 2002. It was alleged that members of the team, and other teams owned by El Doctor, were paid in stacks of $100 bills.

As for Atlas, their star player and captain from 2015-2018 was Rafael Márquez Álvarez, who was among the 22 Mexican citizens listed by the United States Department of Treasury on accusations of ties to Raúl Flores Hernández, alias “El Tío”, an independent drug trafficker that was tied to both the Sinaloa Cartel and the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), as previously reported by Borderland Beat, although Márquez  would deny this to be the case.

The Alleged CJNG Factor

The violence that took place on Saturday could easily be seen as an escalation of conflicts between La Resistencia Albiazul and Barra 51, a tragedy stemming from out of control soccer fans.

Yet there is another angle that has quietly made the news. In an interview with Reforma, one of the injured fans claims that amongst the people attending the game was an individual known as “El Beto”/”El Betito”, leader of a fuel theft (huachicolero) organization based out of San Juan del Río, Querétaro, who is rumored to have had ties to the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRDL), and members of his group.

“He brought his sicarios, the people that he uses to rob fuel and liquified petroleum gas, they participated in the beatings”.

It is also alleged that a mysterious figure known as “El Herón”, who is either a member or affiliate of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, CJNG) was also at the game.

“Everything was because of these two; they saw each other, they brought their gangs and did it with them, everything else was just a gift”.

In the days following the riot, the following video began the subject of attention:

It is being alleged that, based upon the voice and a glimpse of a tattoo, the individual who appears throughout this video wearing shorts, a sweatshirt, and green hat is an individual known as "El Gordo", a subordinate of "El Beto" and known Querétaro soccer fan.

Furthermore, another line of investigation indicates that Barra 51 had CJNG members in its ranks, specifically individuals who had worked under Salvador Reséndiz Hernández, alias "El Rex", who was arrested in October 2021.

El Rex was a leader of a huachicolero organization, known as Los Hades, which which was formed in 2018 and was also known as Cartel de Las Palmillas. Los Hades operated in Querétaro, Hidalgo and México, where in addition to fuel theft, they were involved in kidnappings, drug trafficking, and drug sales at a retail level.

While the links between Los Hades and the CJNG are unclear, El Rex signed narco messages under their name starting in 2020, indicating some level of affiliation. It is also worth noting that Los Hades had a bitter dispute with "El Beto" for control of fuel theft in San Juan del Río, Querétaro.

    2. @741 just because they are laying on the floor motionless in a 30 second clip video doesn't necessarily mean they are dead. You really would have needed to be there and witness it for yourself to make that call.

      Delete
    3. There are numerous witnesses that have said there were deaths. People getting stabbed in the head with ice picks, getting their heads bashed with 7 lb steel pole holders etc... this was similar to a prison riot/fight between rivals, where inflicting death, serious damage was the goal

    1. It wasn't always like that, try to keep that in mind. The cartel shit might've tainted society some, but I do think there was some cartel element involved. And don't group all Mexicans in the same catagory as far as when it comes to this type of sh@#! If that's how it was you wouldn't have heard people in the video telling them that that was it, to stop it, that that was enough, to leave them alone, etc.

What you fail to see that Mexico tops #1 in Homicides in the world, in 2021 35,000 then some in here say some go unreported to triple it. No one can top the high yearly murder rate of Mexico.

    3. Anon 8:39 am. Would that be a relief to those who got murder during those events in the places I mention? Would it help to say Mexico is more dangerous? I have friends and relatives in Mexico who live there and nothing has happened to them. Actually my God father was killed in the 90s during a robbery but a few friends of mine got killed here just because they were confused to be gang members. But it’s cool. We still go back and forth between Mexico and USA.

I also know truth hurts so I understand you being defensive about the situation in Mex but face it some parts of this planet are way more dangerous than others and right now,today,3/8/22 Mexico it at the top or very close to it.
