SEDENA Catches Sinaloa Plane With 338 Kilos of Drugs in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora

The following is a direct translation of an article by journalist Manuel Espino for El Universal newspaper that was published on January 26, 2022.

A pilot and his passenger who were transporting approximately 338 kilograms of various drugs in a Cessna 206 aircraft were detained in Sonora by members of the Army (SEDENA) and Air Force in an air interdiction operation.

After the air surveillance system radar detected that an aircraft was coming from Culiacán, Sinaloa, the aircraft suddenly deviated its route for no apparent reason, causing Air Force personnel to take action.

According to SEDENA, three T-6C+ aircrafts were sent to take off and from the air they observed the Cessna aircraft land on a dirt road in the municipality of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, which was immediately abandoned by its two crew members who continued to be visually tracked.

To prevent the aircraft from taking off, soldiers from SEDENA deployed a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter with an airmobile reaction force onboard.

On the ground, SEDENA personnel managed to secure the aircraft, which was carrying 180 kilograms of cocaine, 65 kilograms of fentanyl, 51 kilograms of heroin, 39 kilograms of methamphetamine, two kilograms of benzodiazepine and one kilogram of narcotics.

Those arrested were in flagrante delicto. The aircraft and the seized drugs were handed over to the corresponding authorities, reported SEDENA.
