Culiacán, Sinaloa: The Day We Lost The City Documentary

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

On October 17, 2019, the most shocking criminal event in the history of Sinaloa occurred. The series of decisions that paralyzed Culiacán and caused a wound that has not yet healed, were portrayed in the documentary

"The Day We Lost The City", made by Sinaloan journalists Marcos Vizcarra and Luis Brito and produced by the civil organization, Iniciativa Sinaloa AC with support from the Resilience Fund, a program of The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, GI-TOC.

    2. The Mexican cartels dominance and viciousness is due to one thing and one thing only!! Not because they are criminal geniuses, not because they are criminal masterminds….due to their proximity to the biggest and richest drug consumer base in the world! Without that they would be petty thieves and purse snatchers! Instead of the serial rapist serial killing cartels that they ALL are!
Ask yourself…. They are so powerful why doesn’t mayo or mencho or Chapito come to USA and live and set up shop? They are all funded by the drug appetite of the USA and their close proximity! If pathetic Mexico gov would allow citizens to arm themselves this shit would not be happening on the scale it is. The glorified rape, the glorified savages, and the glorified petty criminals are a huge problem for the Mexican males that engage in such glorification! The average and poor good Mexican males don’t stand a fucking chance to protect their families! It is very sad!

    3. If that was true then why isn’t Canada controlled by Narcos? Sure the us has sone Blane but so does the corruption and impunity in Mexico. Btw, the us drug market is not the only big market anymore as the middle class expands and people can afford it. There are drug fiend as all over Mexico as well so Whitey as your scapegoat is a little misguided.

  2. What about government organized Crime of State?
Let's remember who organized drug trafficking "to help the contras" fight the legally elected government of Nicaragua for example, or "The First 9/11" according to Noam Chomsky...
If the chapito had not been released on the spot then you would have seen a City Loss to really remember and not a fiction tale by sold out bought and paid for "journos"...

  4. Sometimes things are not that easy. I believe it was best to let him go instead of creating an all out war in Culiacán. Sooner or later it would be another opportunity. Even the greatest military loose a few battles.

    1. Exactly. But you have those who don't understand that. You have those that want to see an all out war from the comfort of their homes in the U.S. I can gaurantee you that if the lives of their loved ones or their own lives were at risk of being caught in the cross fire they would be singing a different tune.

    1. Can you tell me witch military in the world have not lost a battle? I can pin point some battles lost by some of the best armed forces against common criminals.

    2. That wasn’t a battle.... just a stand off and the Mexican government is the loser...

    3. GC if it was a stand off as you said then why 8 people got killed ? 1 civilian 1 security guard. An intern and 5 sicarios.

  7. Anytime anyone says anything positive about mexicos goverment and armed forces remind them of the day the punk ass sons of that piece of shit chapo put them in check

    1. How about when they killed el Jefe de Jefes Botas Blancas. Or Tonny Montana or when they arrested Chapo Guzman twice. Or when they arrested El Tres Letras Teo. Or when they killed some of the Zetas cartel leaders. Or when they arrested some of the Zetas cartel leaders. You do realize that it was the armed forces the ones who have inflicted the most damage to the cartels right ?

    2. Correct, the only operation kks launched against a top cartel operative failed, because it was meant to fail. Who launches an urban operation on the middle of the day? Only a dumbass. The operation was meant to fail.

      Delete
    3. And the Mexican armed forces are not the only ones who have done that. Other first class armed forces have failed even when they have the best equipment and training in the world. That’s even worse. But that’s the way it is.

  8. Lets not forget it was called off by grandpa AMLO.
They are lucky chapitos grandma is cool with AMLO, if not it would have been a different story.
Even if soldiers were aotnumbered, they could have turned sinaloa into a warzone and killed all those sicarios.
I mean, culiacan was already a warzone that day anyway. There were sicarios with guns running around all over that city. But of course it all boils down to curruption.
I wonder how much chapitos had to pay for their protection that day.

    1. It's very easy to beat the war drums from the comfort of your moms house in the U.S. get off your "call of duty" mindset, this isn't a video game Mexica 1. If the soldiers would have "killed all of the sicarios" as you say, the sicarios would have killed a lot of the innocent military families that were being held hostage. When you're confronted with that dilemma what does a person in their right mind do? Exactly what AMLO did, release Ovidio. those innocent families are not worth the capture of 1 guy. If one of your family members was a part of that hostage group, your elderly grandparents, your mom, your dad, your wife and kids, brothers or sisters, would you have said, " You can kill my family, arrest Ovidio ..." I'm telling you Mexica 1, you're logic is retarded to say the least. Estas pendejito, you think like a kid. You're so blinded by your dislike of the president that you fail to see the bigger picture... You always come on here ranting about how bad AMLO is but what have you done to help mexicos situation. What makes you better qualified for the job of Army General, or president of Mexico for that matter? What is your field of expertise? Economics? Infrastructure? Education? National security? Diplomatic relations? Please share with us you're strategy for making "Mexico great again".

    2. 7:48 ok i see you are a pro AMLO guy and also believe in hugs for thugs, i mean "abrazos no balazos".
Like a guy from michoacan said "that president needs to come out here in tierra caliente and see for himself, all that abrazos and no balasos aint going to solve anything when sicarios are running around with guns"
Only pendejos belive in such logic.

Common sense will tell you to get the millitary and go after those cartels, mexican millitary have the capacity to do it.
Then again, that will never happen because cartels have too much influence and have government in their pockets..
The only way that would change is if they legalized drugs, if drugs were legal in U.S the DEA wouldnt need the mexican cartels to do the dirty work anymore and cartels would be a eliminated. I dont see that happening either so the cartel problem will continue onn with pendejos like you saying "abrasos no balasos" lol

    3. Mexica 1, cuando dije, "Abrazos no balazos?" Re-read my comment 1,2,3 times, I never said that, you tonto. Keep in mind, sicarios died that day.. The funny thing is you never mentioned what you would do if your family was placed in that hostage group. You also didn't tell us what makes you qualified to lead Mexico...
So hypothetically speaking, if you were a soldier that day, taking part in the Culiacanazo and you learn that your wife and 2 kids are being held hostage and will be killed if Ovidio isn't released. Would you be OK with the President sacrificing your family and the other 200 hostages at the price of arresting Chapos son and killing some sicarios?

    4. 2:43 i dont need to read your nonsense again. Its ovious you are a fan of AMLO the way you attacked me lol
I am only being critical of his aproach to the cartel situation. First of pendejo, im not in his shoes nor am i a politician but i guarantee i would do a better job than grandpa AMLO. I was in the U.S millitary for 10 years and i know first hand how easily those cartels could go down if the comander in chief had balks and wanted to eliminate them.
Of course my family was not in culiacan tonto. I know for a fact your family was not involved either so i dont know why you get so upset over this conversation lol
My point is AMLO protected those chapitos and went out like a coward.

What would happen if say san diego california had sicarios running around with guns threatning people and military families? You think the president would have called the soldiers off? Hell no! governor would have called for more reenforcements. Ok, lets say they did negotiate with them for sake of the innocent hostage. You know damn well the next day they would be in the news and everybody and their m9m would be looking gor those chapitos and they would all take heavy loses until they captured those chapitos.
Ut like i said before, AMLO down to the local cop is in the pockets of those capos.
If you dont believe the only way to take them down is to catch them using guns to achive that, then you believ3 in abrazos no balazos aproach, wich is not going to solve anything.
I ask you smary pants, what should AMLO do then?

      Delete
    5. LoL. I don't understand how you see it like AMLO protected Chapitos instead of AMLO protected the hostages. It's not always about your ego or how much balls you have, you have to have a brain. AMLO put himself in the shoes of the soldiers who's family members were being held at gun point by the sicarios that day... hahaha, you said it yourself,, you're not a politician therefore you have no political experience but you have 10 years of military experience and you think that's enough to be president of a country?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 te la mamas solito mi chavo. I asked you twice how you'd feel if it was your family being held hostage and you danced around the question. We both know why. You don't want to admit AMLO made the right decision. You're out of touch with reality Mexica Juan. You talk about "common sense will tell you" but this is not a common situation we're talking about. You're talking about sacrificing hostages to put some dick heads in jail, hahahaaha. Shows how much common sense you have. No mames, Get outta here bro, you're retarded.

    6. 8:22 you know damn well AMLO is cool with chapitos so stop you nonsense..
In Any other civilized country those chapitos would be PUBLIC ENEMY #1 for that.
What has your grand oa AMLO said or done about it?
Not a damn thing. Im used to dealung wuth fans all my life and i knowone thin is for sure, you can't beat them because they are full of exvuses for their team, polilical party, president and on and on..
You have a closed mind and like my pops tild me, d9nt argue with a pendejo or a drunk because you will never win LOL
Have a good day. You believe what you want to believe and stay in the dark.
      Abrazos no balazos lol

    7. Lol, I don't know if AMLO is "cool" with chapitos, but apparently you do. So please share with us whatever inside information or evidence you have on the relationship between Guzmans and Obrador... Obrador has actually taken action as a result of this incident, but I wouldn't expect you to know because the only close minded person here is you... as a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure your dad told you, " I don't argue with drunks or pendejos" as he was arguing with you. LoL. It must've went over your head.

  9. I thought the whole reason it was a blunder is because they weren't even planning on grabbing oviedo and just stumbled onto him hence the looks of surprise. Amlo did the right thing releasing ovidio and saving the soldiers families they weren't trying to capture him to begin with so they weren't prepared and Sinatra was to quick to respond.
