La Union de Tepito: Culprits Who Extorted and Tortured Merchants are Apprehended

Female Reporter: On Tuesday Imagen Noticias presented this video where you can see the beatings that alleged extortionists from the criminal group La Unión de Tepito give to a couple of merchants from the Centro Histórico of Mexico City.

With these videos they pressured several merchants so that they would be obligated in paying them fees in order for them to be employed there. Those responsible for recording these videos are already detained.

These 3 subjects are 21, 25, and 31 years old. Two of them have been identified as Manuel Escobar and Eric Morales. On Friday they were apprehended by elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City.


When they were allegedly selling drugs in Colonia Morelos. During the arrest they were found to have 36 bags of marijuana, 211 doses of cocaine, and a black motorcycle.

From this arrest they followed up on intel to locate others involved in the sale of drugs and extortion to merchants. In La Merced area, the Centro Histórico and the Colonia Morelos.

In this manner they identified that around the Mercado Granaditas a group of people extorted merchants. Asking for money in exchange for not hurting them.

And a few hours ago, 8 others were arrested. 6 on Calle Manuel Doblado and Calle José Joaquín Herrera in the Centro Histórico. 4 men and 2 women.

1 of the females is a minor. They were apprehended because they were intimidating vendors in the area. They tried to flee but after a brief chase they were arrested.

They were found to have in their possession 2 firearms and a digital scale. They are identified as Jefferson and Vladimir, Renatada Sae, Tale Ivón, Michael, and Oscar Saúl.

6 hours later in the same Centro Histórico but on Calle Rodríguez Puebla, another 2 were implicated pertaining to the gang of alleged extortionists and drug dealers. These are 2 young individuals who identified themselves as Brandon Kevin and Johnathan Jaír.

Ciro Gómez Leyva: 2 of the 8 detainees today had already been imprisoned before for another crime. For transit theft.

  1. Dr. Sol they usually look the other way, did CJNG tell police to catch them, so they then can take over and extort the plaza?

    1. With CJNG it seems like anything is possible. But La Union de Tepito have had that area on lock for too many years now. I think they just pushed their luck to far on this one.

  3. I agree with you; especially about a revolution "within". IMO, MEXICO is doomed to continue as it has for at least 30 years. Why? Because the violence and corruption problems take at least a couple of generations to eradicate.
