A total of four unidentified armed suspects died in an exchange of gunfire Monday in Castaños municipality in Coahuila state, according to Mexican news accounts.

A Mexican Army unit on road patrol observed a Chevrolet Cheyenne extended cab pickup truck in the town near the intersection of calles Zaragoza and Matamoros, which then attempted to flee the scene.
Several of its occupants opened fire on the army unit.

The ensuing pursuit passed by Castaños city hall.  The gunfire precipitated the temporary evacuation of about 80 individuals.

Army return fire killed all three passengers and the driver. Following the gunfight, soldiers recovered four AR-15 rifles, one submachine gun, 58 weapons magazines, 1,258 rounds of ammunition, eight bulletproof vests and one grenade.  The truck had been reported stolen.

An unidentified woman was hit by the pickup truck as it attempted to elude the army patrol. An unidentified Coahuila state police agent was also wounded in the crossfire.

Castaños is five kilometers south of Monclova city and is on Mexico Highway 57, which leads to the border city of Piedras Negras.  The site is also roughly 50 kilometers north of the state capital of Coahuila, Saltillo,  which has recently been the site of several repeated confrontations between rival criminal gangs and Mexican security forces in including Mexican Army units.

Castaños is also 50 kilometers northwest of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

Nearly all Mexican federal agencies including Secretaria de Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) which is the controlling agency for the Mexican Army and Air Force, Secretaria de Marina (SEMAR) which is the controlling agency for the Mexican Navy and others,  have completely shut down their news functions in accordance with Article 41 of the Constitution of the United States of Mexico, which forbids government propaganda or news of any kind to be released during a federal election campaign.

Various state agencies, though not all, are observing the Article 41 suspensions.

Article 41 news suspensions are expected to be resume the day after the July 1st presidential and federal legislators elections.

  1. Great job, now listen to ten journalist, three poets, and several nobel prize winners, piss moan and raise Hell that the "Military" is abusing Women Children and dogs. Who writes the Truth that but for the Military there would only be Narcolaw in most places along the US Mex border. WHY is there not SUPPORT for the Mex army, airforce,Marines? Such support would demonstrate a responsible public, what an idea.

    1. Me too, if Pena nieto gets elected Mexico will be robbed and its people left in a state of anarchy, if PAN wins we know of their ties with chapo since he has some is somehow related to Felipe Calderon and almost the whole party is financed by sinaloa so they will try to get the country ruled by him, our best bet is Andres Manuel Lopez obrador, he actually has kept Mexico city working flawlessly, one of the.biggest cities in the world, he is the best chance for mexico

  4. You 2 are dumbasses, maybe people dont like the military coming into their homes, kidnapping, killing people then just saying "oh they all had criminal records". The military chops people up the same as the cartels do. You both obviously dont know too much about real daily life in Mexico, you just read the news and then think you have it All figured out.

  9. 8:07 AM Mexico "will become a hell hole." WTF is it now. Over the past 5 year, Mexico has gone from a blooming industrial nation with tourist trade equaled by only a few nations. Now it is far from either, the only jobs for men are working for cartels, they have 20 % of their tourist trade, and Calderon damn sure doesn't care. Pena will negotiate peace and this war BS will be over Thank God. And maybe Calderon will be prosecuted internationally for his war crimes. He damn sure isn't welcome in Mexico. I will laugh my ass off when it is time for Calderon to pay the piper.

  13. Truly,as a US citizen,i wish the best for Mexico.
But i have to say, that from seeing comments on here, there seems to be an unhealthy dislike for the "gringo"whatever that is meant to imp-lie.
Politicians the world over are generally no good,it is just another way to enrich themselves, but the Mexican situation seems even worse.I truly believe that Mexico, may have to physically oust these no good people who feed on the resources of Mexico.Where is the spread of wealth? Is there not one good man, with balls enough to halt all this shit, and improve the lot of decent Mexicans, work for young men and women, instead of the only employment prospects being cartel related.I hope for better for Mexico, and i am a "gringo".
