"Levantones" reported in Piedras Negras, Coahuila

Reports of levantones, or abductions, have been surfacing since Monday (4/29/2010) from various locations of this border city. According to witnesses most those abducted are members and associates of the Zeta cartel including business owners, drug dealers and even "halcones" or lookouts. None of the missing people have been located, whether dead or alive.

It is rumored that the cartel del golfo (CDG) have arrived in Piedras Negras and that "comandos" , paramilitary groups of gunmen, belonging to this cartel are responsible for the upsurge in violence.

Home invasions are ocurring during the night and in the morning these houses appear abandoned with open doors and lights on, the gates into the properties destroyed. No one enters these houses as the neighbors are too intimidated to investigate.

The local police are refusing to investigate any missing persons reports and only family members search for those abducted, in constant fear of reprisal. As of Thursday checkpoints had been setup on all roads leading into Piedras Negras in an attempt to halt the growing violence by gunmen from Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and southern Coahuila.
The news abstract above was translated from a credible Mexican blog site. "LAS NOTICIAS SOBRE NARCOTRAFICO EN MEXICO"

Verification was impossible from local news sources, in this case the "Zocalo de Piedras Negras ", as self censorship by the press is the practice of the day outside of the large main cities. Being a news reporter in Mexico covering organized crime can be lethal.

I'm posting this story because I was able to obtain a partial confirmation of the occcurences described above via e-mail from a local citizen of Piedras Negras.

"Estoy perfectamente bien, Gerardo.

For you non-spanish speakers this person states that abductions of zetas are taking place with minimal shooting and that the Zetas in Piedras Negras are basically on the run. For any reader of this blog with family and friends in Piedras Negras I hope this post clarifies what is occuring.

  1. This is the scariest part of it all. People should at least feel secure in their own homes, but not even. This people don't have respect for anything.

  8. The thugs from the Cartel del Golfo are as bad as the Z's. It's like deciding who was best, Hitler or Stalin? The fools that thank them for eliminating the Z's are in for an ugly surprise.

  9. Mexican Army wins Guiness Prize. Delates 14 hours to attend a bomb emergency in Reynosa and nobody of the media publicate this event. Even Televisa omitted the information in their boring local news program transmited from Matamoros. Who can help us as citizens?

  10. no matter which way we look at this drug war going on, i think the public just wants it to end - and for that to happen there needs to be a winner and a loser. The CDG are blaming the Zetas for all the wrong doings, and the majority of the people buy into it because at the end of the day, all they really have is hope. Hope that all these bad things come to an end (the imposed taxes by these narcos, killings, rapes, etc), hope that there really is a good guy (though i doubt it), hope the bad guy loses...hope for a better tomorrow.

  12. actually in coahuila doesn´t exist any credible press news (zocalo it´s the worst) -they only say good things and say how humberto moreira (coahuila´s governor)it´s a great person ---he is very confabulated with criminal groups, one of his most intimates friend´s (su compadre) is ariel leza maldonado-a kidnapper, his brother ruben moreira aka zerevro (brain but writed with some distortion as his own mental distortion) has like his good neighbor sigifredo najera a.k.a el canicon - one of the worst evil torturers from the zeta´s
when the federal troops finally get him (el canicon) the moreira´s feel so angry with the federal goverment cuz they didn´t tell them about his capture --uhu but they didn´t report him cuz he was his friend

  14. Everything is calm in piedras negras for the honest people that have nothing to do with this, la nueva federacion is just going for whom ever is involved. Just stay away from clubs and head home early, drive calm, no burning rubber or so because you could be mistaken. Don't drive late at night and no problems will be your way, take care gente de piedras:)

  15. I have family there and a cousin of mine has been a police officer in piedras negras for almost 9yrs and has never had an incident with drug cartels. but its different now i hope he stays safe. but out of all the border towns i've visited piedras negras is the safest by far. as long as you dont cause trouble and think your better than anyone else there you should be just fine... VIVA MEXICO!

  19. I am a Texan who has visited Piedras monthly since 1999. When Senor De Los Santos closed down Modernos last year, I knew it was time to exercise extreme caution. They had been open continuously since the late 1920's. Presidents and digintaries from all over the world have been to Modernos and now it has been closed by this because of the violence and era of the Narcos. I pray for Piederas Negras and for Mexico. It is a rich country both in beauty, charm of its people and in natural resources. One day Mexico will be returned to its greatness and happiness, and I will then travel back to Piedras on the weekends to see friends and others whom I got to know and love. Please Pray for Piedras Negras. Muchas Gracias

  32. why do you think everybody posts as "anonymous". nah, nothing is going on...they are like the 3 monkey's ...hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil....the evil is all around. get your heads out of your butts and do something. your country is losing a lot of money on their tourism. right now money is tight everywhere so instead of worrying about who sell the most or who is the biggest (drug lord) do something positive for your country.

  33. Es parte del trato para obtener la paz entre el CDS y CDG de eliminar a los z de sus filas y exterminarlos asta el ultimo. En sinaloa los unicos que extorcionar y secuestran son los zetas. Animo cdg duro con ellos.

  36. What we need to do is let the US military just go invade Mexico. And let the marines takecare of all these punks. America will knock their block off. Once again its time for the US to make the world a safer place.

  38. I have been going to piedras for the last 2 months and this last time stayed in piedras and rode the bus to monclova with my husband and I have the greatest time. No one bothered us we walk around shopped , even at night no oNe bothered us. I didn't hear not one gun shot the whole time. In America if you look for trouble you will find it just as in mexico we here in us have drug problems as well but you don't hear of it. There are a lot of unsafe places here as well as in Mexico. I have students that go to mexico city and monteray every weekend and nothing happens.

  39. if you are american: 1904 American deaths in Mexico since 2003-only 1/4 were homicide. That reflects safety for Americans, check with your State Dept and follow recommendations.
