Morelia, Michoacán: 14 Years After The Grenade Attacks, Godoy Asks That The Case Be Reopened

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

The former governor of Michoacán called on the powers that be to request that the case be reopened on the grenade attacks of September 15, 2008

Fourteen years after the terrorist attacks that took place in Morelia, Michoacán, during the Cry of Independence ceremony, the federal deputy, Leonel Godoy Rangel, asked the victims and other main actors to request that the case be reopened and that the those responsible for the grenade attacks of September 15, 2008 in the Plaza Melchor Ocampo be held accountable.

Leonel Godoy, who served as governor of Michoacán during the attacks of that September 15, said that he does not have the power to request that the case be reopened, but that he would have no objection to it being done and even requested that it be so, when considering that he owes it to the victims of the grenade attacks.

The legislator assured that the file has not prescribed and it would be ideal if the case were reopened and those responsible for what he called "reprehensible acts" are apprehended. “I am doing it at this moment, but not formally because I don’t have that attribution, other authorities have it. I say it again that this file is open, the criminal action has not resolved and it would be good for justice for the victims if the file is reopened because at this moment that cowardly attack is unpunished.

Regarding the facts, the former Michoacan governor recalled that there were three detainees by the government of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, who was president of Mexico; who were released when it was shown that they were tortured to plead guilty. "That is absolutely reprehensible, but one cannot expect anything less if Genaro García Luna, who is now accused of links with the Sinaloa cartel, was Calderón's right arm in matters of security."

For the context of our readers, it was on September 15, 2008 when the first terrorist attack was recorded in Mexico. It happened in Morelia, during the ceremony of the Cry of Independence. While Leonel Godoy sang the harangue and rang the bell that gave way to the pyrotechnics for the celebrations of one more anniversary of the beginning of the fight for the Independence of Mexico, grenades were thrown directly at the Morelians who were celebrating in the Melchor Ocampo plaza.

The attack left a total of 8 fatalities and more than 100 injured; many of them have both physical and psychological consequences. Some lost a member and others are unable to work. For them there were pensions, some for life and others temporary. But the majority were not recognized as victims and it is a day in which they continue to “fight” for this “recognition”, since, as a result of the events, they are prevented from carrying out work.
