Puebla Lawmaker Sandra Nelly Cadena Arrested for Arms Dealing

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

A Puebla lawmaker was arrested on Wednesday in possession of a collection of weapons, including at least one semi-automatic machine gun and grenades.

Sandra Nelly Cadena Santos, a Morena party deputy in the state Congress, was detained by police in her home in Tecamachalco, a town 70 kilometers southeast of Puebla city. Her husband, a former Federal Police officer, was also taken into custody.

The Puebla Attorney General’s Office (FGE) announced on Twitter that it had raided the home of Cadena and Jesús Portilla and seized long and short firearms as well as grenades — whose legal use is limited to the army. One of the weapons is a semi-automatic machine gun made by the United States gun maker Barrett Firearms Manufacturing.

Puebla Governor Miguel Barbosa, who also represents Morena, told a press conference that it was an open secret in Tecamachalco that Cadena and Portilla were selling weapons. “They weren’t using them for target practice. They were for sale; a homeowner doesn’t buy a Barrett,” he said Thursday.

Some of the weapons authorities confiscated at Morena Deputy Sandra Nelly Cadena’s home.

“… They presumably dedicated themselves to the sale of the most powerful caliber weapons. Now we have to see who supplied them, it’s a whole chain,” Barbosa said, adding that the investigation into Cadena’s alleged criminal activities was not new.

Cadena, who was formerly the secretary-general of the Tecamachalco municipal government, and Portilla, who was dismissed from the now-defunct Federal Police for “disloyal practices,” were taken to FGE offices near Puebla city after their arrest. A date has not yet been set for their appearance in court.

The newspaper El Financiero reported that the weapons were confiscated and turned over to the Defense Ministry (Sedena) and then eventually taken to a military facility in México state where they were destroyed.

  1. There is no such thing as a "semi-auto machine gun." And Barrett is known for its .50 cal semi-auto, although it does manufacture the M240 machine gun (FN MAG).

    4. An M240 SLR does exist that is a semi-auto version of the M240 machine gun. I am looking for more info/articles to see if that is what was seized or if the reporting was incorrect.

    3. @443 I'm sure Obrador didn't know she even existed up until this point. I'm also pretty sure he's not going to step in and pardon her for breaking the law. Now as far as imagining what the president is doing you can imagine all day long, doesn't show us proof of anything other than you have a pretty wild imagination.

  3. It’s so nice that the governor decides what a homeowner should own. Meanwhile he is protected by automatic weapons wherever he goes. Guns for Me NOT for thee. Kinda like when Biden said all a homeowner needs to defend themselves from intruders is a shotgun and a few shells. Typical government telling a citizen what they need meanwhile they get the thing they say u don’t need! God bless the 2nd amendment!! God bless the USA and the constitution! I’m guessing the lady&husband were mainly selling to criminals. Poor and average Mexican citizens arm yourselves with whatever firearms u can afford and die defending yourselves and your family! The government and every version of the cops WILL NOT protect u when it’s time. And fuck the law and people that say u don’t need this firearm or that firearm.

  5. AMLO . . screamed false election results when he lost. Reminds you of someone else. But Moreno comes into power, so have a new party collaborating with Cartels. Semi-automatics are available for sure. Don't get out of whack when someone corrects the news, don't think they are doing it personally. Today, more guns are confiscated in Laredo. El Diario el Laredo couldn't upload, but interesting to watch if it gets easier to obtain.

  8. Yes s homeowner would buy a Barrett 50 caliber rifle. It would be used to shoot the big fat rats, that roam garden. Selling arms would only be a slap on the wrist.
