Fresnillo, Zacatecas: The City of Fear

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

Video translation is as follows:

An anonymous call had alerted them that an armed criminal cell had torched a house. And that the fire threatened to spread through the San José subdivision community. The firefighters went to the address who gave them that trembling voice.

And they followed the protocol that was installed years ago  in the municipality of Fresnillo, Zacatecas. Wherever firefighters go they must be escorted by the police. Because fire in this city of 148,000 inhabitants is almost never an accident, it’s the way in which the narco trafficker signs his crimes.

And so fire trucks and the police accelerated towards the fire. Only to find that it was not one, not two, but three houses that were burning. And in front of them there were 6 recently murdered corpses of people with blood damp scalps.

The Fresnillo municipal policeman, an expert in murders from seeing them daily, quickly connected the dots.

Some armed criminal cells entered the houses, took those people out, kneeled them to the ground, shot them dead, and burned their houses. So that not even their families were left with anything.

That day, February 16, three people were murdered in Fresnillo. A city that welcomed President Andrés Manual López Obrador’s visit with a desperate clamor. "Please do something for us, they are killing us."

Fresnillo, Zacatecas, once a mining town with a quiet, almost boring life, is the new epicenter of national pain. Homicides have grown at a rate of 300 percent in the last year.

And no one is safe. In the last few days they have assassinated policemen, municipal workers, professionals, students, workers, children, and even a trainer from the national electoral district who was seeking to recruit functionaries for the upcoming elections.

Organized crime doesn’t rest. One day it burns houses. Another day it left corpses in the streets. They install narco laboratories, extort jewelry salesmen who live off of the sale of silver. And even places that sell religious articles of the Santo Niño de Atocha.

Too much violence for a municipality with the soul of a small town. The reason why Fresnillo is a war zone today is the same story that has been repeated frequently for several years.

One damn day in 2018, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación entered the city. They wanted to claim her as their own and the blood began to flow as if the dead were infinite.

Zacatecas is criss crossed by El Mencho’s gunmen who want to wrest control of the state from the Sinaloa Cartel. Those who feel that they are the historical owners of this key region for moving drugs towards the United States, the Gulf, and the Mexican Pacific.

Ever since both cartels have clashed with each other. Fresnillo lost its luster of the vibrant city that had a large corridor of mining, automotive, and industrial manufacturing. Very little is now left.

When the sun goes away, so do the people. A species of forced confinement against the epidemic of murders that has destroyed the local economy. And for which they find no cure. A report from the government's security cabinet portrays the drama in Zacatecas.

More than half of 58 percent of municipalities are threatened by organized crime. They pay extortion to criminals or distrust even their own police. More than a half.

And the other half tend to say in a macabre joke: They are so afraid that the mayors preferred to lie in the survey because in the state the drug trafficker has ears and eyes everywhere.

But the situation is especially critical in Fresnillo. The municipality where people feel most insecure throughout the country. This according to a national urban public safety survey conducted by INEGI stands above the city of Ecatepec or Ciudad Juárez.

There is a a fear to roam through the streets and not have your life affected by any of this.  Any sudden noise makes people tremble. And any fire in the distance is interpreted as someone's luck has run out. They burned his house and probably his body is already lying on some dirt road somewhere. This is the city with the most favor in Mexico. Fresnillo, the city of fear. The one that cries out for help, but isn’t heard from much.

    1. The Zetas left a school of vanditey and motherfackers, senator and candidate for governor of Zacatecas david monrial was a municipal presidente, because brother ricardo said so, and their brother saul who nobody wanted is presidente municipal now, their former ally "hambriento
medrano" used to say "the gorro don't make you a man" became a PRI congressman selected by EPN and then secretary of the present governor, after a career as gay entrepreneur serving cartels and politicians in Nayarit or colima and Cd Juarez, they formwr allies are not friends anymore and they do not give a fuck about Zacatecas, and there is a chance that ricardo wants to be the next presidente of México,

  3. You can argue that even when the CDG took over the main regions of Zacatecas afterward, that things were even MORE peaceful..

I would imagine that people these days in Mexico must absolutely hate and be disgusted by Mencho far more than when then Zetas were the macabre center of attention during 2008-2013..

Yes, the Zetas had their own period of multi-state expansion as well, but it didn’t seem last nearly as long as what CJNG has been doing recently.. nor has it been nearly as particularly gruesome.

Who would have thought back in 2011-2012, when everyone was cursing the Zetas and Z-40, and rooting for “Los Matazetas”, that these same guys would end up becoming a cartel far more bigger, dangerous and brutal than the Zetas ever were.....

It’s thoughts like that really concern me about the future; as we all know, the past can tell us everything about the present, and the present can give us a good glimpse of what is yet to come..

    1. CJNG seems to be getting stronger. They killed two bosses in the last week. The government needs to take them on directly, but they are in everyone's pockets.

    2. 1:33 AM What ever you say Secret Management. Looks like you are starting to realize that everything you said in the past was air coming out of your ass.

The Zetas have never disappeared and their downfall started in 2015-2016 when they lost Nayarit. The Sinaloa Cartel would sell them the raw material to produce meth, heroin. They were able to grow cannabis in the hills and were also able to get shipments of cocaine delivered then moved them into Laredo and onward. They went from totally balling out to losing 90% of their drugs shipments.

    3. What happens to CJNG is all in the hands of the Mexican and American government. Do they decide to splinter the group or keep it how it is. Do they want it to take full control of Organized crime in Mexico or do they want chaos and destruction. Do they let the snitchaloas and CJNG fight it out and see which one win then destroy the winner.

    7. Secret management is a scumbag CDS CDG anything but CJNG groupie. Foreal, had to block his stupid ass on Reddit because I couldn't stand seeing his biased ass opinions (claiming they were facts and non biased) . I'm not a CJNG groupie nor CDS, none. But CJNG is obviously not entirely ALL hype. I wonder what sad excuse Secret Management had about CJNG "Cholo" CNP.."the cops turned him over" .. how do u think these cartels usually get enemies? They have law enforcement do it so these men surrender then they get a little surprise lol.
I honestly think CJNG hasn't even reached it's peak BUT what goes up, must one day come down. And lo que recio empieza, recio termina.

This year's elections are going to change alot as far as the narcos territory

    8. 11:12 thats not what i hear from people in Guanajuato and veracruz, just because you are a groupie who thinks they are the saviors of Mexicos problems doesnt mean they are being honest in most states they are in.

    9. @3:03 I wonder if these CJNG fanboys are some teenagers from the other side of the globe thinking this is "cool". CJNG causes peaceful places to become the most dangerous cities of the world, Celaya Guanajuato had been a quiet super safe place for the last I don't know, one hundread years? And suddenly is on the list of most dangerous places globally. Same shit happening to Zacatecas state and the rest of Mexico thanks to these individuals. CJNG has an expansion plan and backing from a side of the Mexican government, that's the only reason of their standing, anyone who doesn't understand this is not from the country.

  5. I remember when Zs were in control in fllo, it was more like them against the military, few clashes here and there, but now it’s been more than 10 years everyday 1,2,3,4,5 executions..! I remember when the only problem were los cholos de la Zapata y La Pancho Villa.

  6. Some of the reasons why the CJNG expansion has been going on for so long is due to the ties they had before they were started. Los Zetas had many connections around the republic but not compared to CJNG. They are giving mencho the same treatment as Chapo but are not looking at the other regional bosses that FAR more violent. Is not rare to see mencho around La Ruana, Tonaya, El limon, Los Asmoles and other small towns especially during the fiestas in January. The regional bosses are the ones people fear the most because they get away with more shit before anything reaches the top. A couple years ago in Teca with the whole deal with the Italians, a representative of mencho showed up and asked around and people complained about what was going on how the sicarios were “sangrones y no son respetuosos” and next thing you know it like thanos and the snap of the finger the entire cell in teca was gone and replaced by new people. This cartel is highly organized and is not shy of chopping off a finger to save the hand.

    2. @10:33 While I like that you are from the same region I'm from, I have to tell you that Mencho only exists in this shape because of the PRI. Z were the same, ask your elders, the ones you know involved since the 80s. It's all about the "global" mob. And you know gabachos run it in the end.

Mencho is just a tool like Lazcano was.
