'El Tony', CJNG Plaza Boss in Los Apaseos, Killed by Rival Cartel Members

"MX" for Borderland Beat

Apaseo el Alto, Guanajuato, where El Tony was attacked, is about a thirty-minute drive from Queretaro City, Queretaro.

Yesterday the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) plaza boss in Los Apaseos, Guanajuato, was attack by rival cartel members. He was sent to a hospital in Queretaro where he succumbed to his wounds.

According to security forces, the attack occurred in San Antonio Calichar, a rural community in the municipality of Apaseo el Alto. The victim's name was Antonio Zuñiga Garcia (aged 53), commonly referred to by his aliases El Tony, Tonina, and/or Antonino.

The victim was found by paramedics inside a gray vehicle while still alive. However, he was severely wounded and has a gunshot wound on his dead. He died hours later in the hospital. At the scene authorities confirmed that another person was killed. He was not identified by press time and his body was taken to a morgue in Celaya, Guanajuato.

Local media reports say that El Tony was the plaza boss of Los Apaseos (a name that refers to two municipalities in Guanajuato: Apaseo el Grande and Apaseo el Alto). He ran the plaza alongside Leonardo Navarro Escutia, also known as El Tio, Pollo, and/or Abuelo. Both were responsible for all organized crime activities in the area, including: drug dealing and trafficking, kidnappings, illegal oil extraction, extortions, and vehicle theft.

El Tony (second row) was on the Guanajuato's most-wanted criminals. This list was leaked by Excelsior newspaper last year and reshared by Borderland Beat.

El Tony was classified by the security corporations as one of the main generators of violence in the state of Guanajuato. He ranked second on the list only below Emilio Rosas Martínez, alias El Manitas, who controls Salamanca municipality. El Tony became a CJNG plaza boss during a restructuring carried out by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, the top leader of the cartel.

Reports from the intelligence unit of the Mexican Navy indicate that El Tony was seeking to create a drug corridor that would connect the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Querétaro, and Guanajuato with Jalisco, as reported by Borderland Beat.

On 12 March 2019, El Tony was nearly killed in an attempt on his life in Vista Azul neighborhood in Queretaro. Two of his bodyguards were killed in the attack.

    1. @ MX

I sent you the link to info infobae you left out some important info regarding the videos on social media of the attacks on CJNG that left some Jalisco Cartel members dead by members of Grupo Flechas Operativa MZ this past weekend.

    2. @10:47 - Thank you. Durango has nothing to do with this incident in Guanajuato/Queretaro, hence why I didn't include it (out of scope). I sent a link to Sol Prendido about the Durango shootout. If he cannot take it I'll write an entire separate piece on that event. Can you post more links here if you have them? Thank you!

    3. Why MX ignores comments challenging his information???

How was this a rival cartel hit? Please elaborate.

      Delete
    4. 1:32 - One of the cited sources says "grupos antagónicos", translated to rival (cartel) groups. If you have a source that has identified the perpetrators, please post them here. Info can evolve and change as more is known.

    5. @MX isnt that what majority of headlines read without full and certain information? It was a hit, yes we know. From who? That remains a mystery for you and I. Dont jump to conclusions buddy.
If it were a rival cartel, I'm sure they're that desperate that they wouldve made it know? Dont you think? CSRDL is tryna make a comeback, not leave their murders anonymous?

For all we know it was an internal hit???

Cjng operators dies; it was certainly a rival cartel.

Cds operator dies in jalisco; its probably recycled news?

Do you see the double standard here?

    6. @4:08 - As a reporter, I write material here that has been previously published by *reliable sources*. I do not add my own views simply because I believe them to be correct, and I do not remove sources' views because I disagree with them.

The threshold for inclusion is verifiability, not truth. Truth is not always clear or unquestionable as we may desire.

The CDS operator who died in Jalisco (was it El Polo?) was not widely reported by reliable sources. I asked you or someone else to provide more for me other than La Opinion but you didn't. I explained why I need more *reliable sources*.

I'm still waiting for you to provide them. And while you're at it, please provide links that say El Tony's death may be internal. I'm happy to amend the article as more information is known.

  4. So do the ambulance drivers need to know who's who, to know which ambulance to bring these guys to?

imagine being shot by some cartel, and then they bring you to the hospital that the cartel built.

    1. There are a lot of private ambulance and medical services in Mexico. His people probably called for an ambulance to take him to Queretaro since that plaza is way cooler.

    3. You’ll be surprised how many private hospitals in major cities like Guadalajara, CDMX, Monterrey, and Tijuana cater to cartel members. Usually the opposing cartel members attend the same hospitals, they typically don’t do anything stupid because once that hospital goes down they will ruin their operations. It happened once in Zapopan. (Too long of a story to tell the whole thing).

    4. You're talking about when Mencho was shot and the people of Zapopan saved his life and hid him from law enforcement? And law enforcement was so mad they kidnapped and disappeared a whole shitton of ppl trying to find where they took him? I believe that's why Zapopan is and has always been a stronghold if Mencho, his Family and close associates
