Parents Find 5,000 Fentanyl Pills in Child’s Toy Bought at Thrift Store in Arizona

A child’s toy bought at a Phoenix, Arizona, thrift store turned out to be stuffed with what police believe was thousands of pills of the dangerous drug fentanyl.

A couple bought the Glo Worm toy for their daughter at a store in El Mirage, according to Phoenix police. The Glo Worm is built to light up and play music when squeezed, and can be opened to remove electronics before washing. The parents were in the process of cleaning the toy when they stumbled across the pills and called police, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune confirmed.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid often mixed with other illicit drugs like heroin and cocaine that causes euphoric-like effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids increased over 16 percent from 2018 to 2019, according to the CDC.

Law enforcement officials used the incident as a reminder for parents to inspect all open and used toys.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, approved for use as an analgesic and anesthetic. It is extremely powerful; it has become an attractive drug for opiate drug users. Fentanyl is also illicitly manufactured in laboratories in China and probably also in Mexico.

Fentanyl is used for its potent opioid properties. It is approximately 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Like other opioids, fentanyl causes euphoria and is very addictive.

Fentanyl is transported to the United States directly from China or China via Canada. It is also introduced via the Mexico-US border, where large volumes of fentanyl have been seized, although, these shipments are of low purity. On average these shipments reach 7 % purity while fentanyl seized from China can have a purity of 90%.

It is believed that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel are the largest traffickers of Fentanyl.

  2. These pills seem to have died down fairly in our area (West Coast), but of course black tar and now fentanyl itself seems to be more available.

It seems like these pills are a prime gateway to get people into fentanyl

Think about it — an addict, rookie or veteran, will absolutely pay for pills that are cheaper and stronger.

Once they realize it’s fentanyl, and start to enjoy it, they will most certainly take the plunge and switch 9 times out of 10..

    2. They're everywhere in Phoenix rn. I can't make it 3 days without someone outside of the gas station asking if I got any "blues" - or need any. At $5-$7 each, they just panhandle and smoke pills all day. Sad, but I don't have the answer to curb demand.
