CDN Tries to Shoot Down a Military Helicopter in Nuevo León; 5 Sicarios Killed

Suspected gunmen of the Northeast Cartel (CDN) clashed with the Mexican military last weekend at a ranch in Doctor Cross, a municipality in Nuevo León that borders Tamaulipas. At least five sicarios were killed. The clash took place 2 km (1.2 mi) away from Camargo municipality, where 19 people were killed last month.

The shootout started when a military helicopter noticed that there was a suspected 'narco-camp' in the area. As they approached the area the soldiers were shot by CDN gunmen using Barret rifles and AK-47s. The helicopter evaded the attacks and called for ground reinforcements. A military convoy arrived at the scene minutes later and was attacked by the CDN upon arrival. However, the soldiers were able to neutralize the attack and kill five gang members.

Last November, CDN members killed the Doctor Coss police chief, Francisco Leonides Cruz, and two of his aides. Local reports said that the CDN used monstruos (literally "monsters"), a term used by cartels when referring to armored cartel vehicles, when they ambushed them.

Borderland Beat analysis

Doctor Coss is close to La Frontera Chica (also known as La Ribereña), a border region along Tamaulipas. In the context of the Mexican Drug War, it is a lucrative drug corridor currently under dispute by the CDN and the Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel (CDG). Doctor Coss is an important turf to control because it has highways that connect it to Reynosa, Miguel Aleman and Camargo, three border cities with legal ports of entry to the U.S.

The municipalities of Guerrero, Mier, Miguel Aleman, Camargo and Diaz Ordaz make up "La Frontera Chica"

The CDN, based in Nuevo Laredo, is trying to expand east into La Frontera Chica, which has historically been controlled by the CDG. Reports say that the CDN commanders in the area are Ricardo 'Ricky' Chapa and another individual simply known as 'El Amarillo'. The CDG commander in the area is Cesar Morfin Morfin ('El Primito') and his brother Alvaro ('R-8'). They are among the top ten most-wanted cartel figures in Tamaulipas, as reported by Borderland Beat.

  1. CDN seems to be being obliterated in Nuevo Laredo. Do they bring it on themselves by challenging authorities frequently or are they being targeted by authorities more than other cartels?

    1. They have orders to shoot at all rivals on sight no matter if its military or cartel.

    2. The CDN gets more attention for sure. Idk exactly why, it may be because they are more brazen. ZVE has the empresarios too, and a better long term strategy by forging partnerships.

Lots of the top ten Tamps criminals listed last month were CDN. Only one from Matamoros... shows you who the quiet ones are. And everyone knows Matamoros has some heavy hitters.

    1. CDN pulls too much feria by controlling the I-35 corridor. They don’t care about Frontera Chica as much. Their eye is on Reynosa. To get there they need the previous chess piece.

    2. 11:57 if primito can't stop cdn on the NL side what makes u think he will handle los escorpiones/metros in Reynosa?

    3. 8:47: first, there are no Escorpiones in Reynosa. Those are from Matamoros.

Primito is a Metro and has ties to Reynosa. It is in reynosas best interest to protect La frontera chica or else CDN will gain ground and be a bigger threat for them.

    7. The only way CDN is able to go into la frontera chica is from Dr Coss Nuevo León. They usually just heat up the plaza and get ran out of LFC by primos crew. That area south of LFC has always been CDG fragile area.

    8. @5:26 you are correct. Also los Comales is the farthest they make it before they run out.

    9. 11:08 You got to recheck your intel. There sure is Escorpiones/matamoros aligned elements in Reynosa. From my understanding, La Mierda and his brother (La Mimi if I remember correctly) are both with Matamoros now cause a faction of the Metros was trying to take them out. Don’t know if things have changed again, but that’s from my understanding.

  3. I agree it’s always cdn cdn cdn everyday now yeah the military kill a lot of them but it seems cdn has an endless army of sicarios none of their leaders el tori el cadete el huevo have been caught soo they are continuing to grow you don’t ever hear of cdg convoys in Nuevo Laredo it’s always the other way I don’t think metros can keep holding them for much longer

    1. It’s more likely that 10 sicario aged 20 get killed and were replaced by 10 new sicarios aged 16. and then the game starts again.
It’s just practice for the Mx army.

  4. @ to the guy that comment about N Laredo extortion

It’s low level thefts that are extorting individuals coming from the US side and they aren’t even armed.
They’re just using intimidation to get money out of “paisanos”.

    1. Busiest commercial crossing worth hundreds of millions in wholesale and CDNE will allow low level "thieves" to extort, carjack and sometimes kill paisanos because it's worth it to heat up the plaza huh? NO MAMES
