WASHINGTON – The Drug Enforcement Administration is alerting the public of dangerous counterfeit pills killing Americans. Mexican drug cartels are manufacturing mass quantities of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic opioid that is lethal in minute doses, for distribution throughout North America.

Based on a sampling of tablets seized nationwide between January and March 2019, DEA found that 27 percent contained potentially lethal doses of fentanyl.

“Capitalizing on the opioid epidemic and prescription drug abuse in the United States, drug trafficking organizations are now sending counterfeit pills made with fentanyl in bulk to the United States for distribution,” said DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon. “Counterfeit pills that contain fentanyl and fentanyl-laced heroin are responsible for thousands of opioid-related deaths in the United States each year.”

Fentanyl and other highly potent synthetic opioids remain the primary driver behind the ongoing opioid crisis, with fentanyl involved in more deaths than any other illicit drug.

A lethal dose of fentanyl is estimated to be about two milligrams, but can vary based on an individual’s body size, tolerance, amount of previous usage and other factors. The full Fentanyl Signature Profiling Program Report on the recent drug sampling and testing is available below.

    2. Imagine the mental gymnastics you have to do to come up with something as stupid as what you just said

  2. The Cartel that figures out how to obtain real Oxycodone would be rich overnight. With all of the resources they have, I am surprised they have not found a way to get the real deal.

    2. They only care about profits. Quality is not always necessary...

    3. Why would they need oxycodone when they have a much cheaper, more powerful version...?

    4. Ugh, mostly because of the ridiculously strict requirements involved in the production of pharmaceutical products. Everything from the active ingredients to the cutting agents are monitored at every step of the progress. The source materials are tightly controlled. If even one ingredient is difficult to source, the entire process falls flat—no substitutes can be used. If you want an example of how this plays out in less-difficult-to-produce substances like cocaine, try buying or importing a large amount of ethyl alcohol to Colombia.

    5. i mean they could just make their own oxycodone/oxymorphone made from mexican poppies. they extract the Thebaine and from there they synthesize the oxy in powder form. It will be more expensive than cocaine or even oil instead of crappy fent that is not even really enjoyable.

    6. @4:54, because Fent is killing their customers, so why would they want to kill their profits?

    7. I understand what @12:16 is asking. I am thinking the post means like can a Cartel open a front Pharmacy in Mexico, order the RX's and then go from there. They were able to open a company and import all of that precursor material to make Meth (with the Chinese guy). But as @4:31 said, they are worried about profits more than quality.

  7. They’re doing this to inject another round of “Mexican Drug Crisis” into 2020 election. After all, fighting any type of “substance” ensures job security for this organization.

  8. Is it still safe for Americans to travel to mexican border towns to buy prescription medications?

  12. 12:16 pm they probably never thought of that strategy but it would succeed. Because a need is going to be met.

  14. I live in California. I know that some people from here go to Mexican pharmacies to buy their prescription medications, because they can’t afford them in the US.
The article states that the cartels are producing dangerous counterfeit prescription meds. Are those meds limited to pain killers ? Just wondering. In the past, I have known of seniors who go in groups across the border to fill prescriptions.

    1. not RX these are street drugs or knock offs of the real thing. Mexico and Canada have always been sources for lower priced pharma. Its twisted because the U.S. funds and conducts the R and D for most

    2. @Chivis, is it true that the Pharmacies in Mexico do not sell Oxycodone? Not sure if you know that but I heard that was the reason people do not go into Mexico and get Percocet to bring to the US.

    3. Yes that is true. Mexico pharmacies do not sell oxycodone
