Canadian Woman Beaten and Raped in her Tulum Hotel Room and Feminicides Have Increased 17% in Michoacán

Leslie York, before and after her ordeal in Tulum.
Mexico City man arrested after Canadian woman beaten in her Tulum hotel. Leslie York underwent nine hours of reconstructive surgery in Cancún.

A Canadian woman’s trip to paradise turned into a nightmare when she was attacked in her hotel room last week in Tulum. Leslie York of Ottawa, Ontario, was beaten so badly while staying at Tulum’s Grand Bahia Principe resort that she required over nine hours of reconstructive surgery.

Leslie York, 29, arrived alone on November 10, planning to meet her mother there the next day.

Around midnight, York left her room to get something to eat. She met two couples also staying at the resort and remained with them in the restaurant until around 3:00am.

After she returned to her room, she heard a knock on her door. It was one of the men she had met at dinner, who authorities have since identified as Ricardo S.P., a 34-year-old chauffeur from Mexico City who was staying at the hotel with his wife.

Ricardo is the suspect in the beating of the Hotel's guest in Tulum.

Through a translation app, he told York that his wife had heard screams coming from her room, and he had come to check on her. She told him she was OK, but the man forced his way into her room and attacked her. She tried to scream, but he choked her and beat her in the face with his fist.

York lost consciousness during the attack and awoke with her eyes swollen shut. She managed to feel her way out of the room to seek help. York was first taken to a private hospital in Playa del Carmen and later transferred to a hospital in Cancún. Local media reported she had been sexually assaulted as well as beaten.

Her mother arrived on November 11, and her brother Matthew York joined them the next day.

“She had nine hours of plastic surgery. She has nerve damage in her face. The swelling is kind of going down now, but at the time it was quite bad,” she told CBC News.

Leslie York remained in Cancún as of Monday, recovering from her injuries and it was not clear when she would be well enough to travel. “Every time she lifts her head up she gets dizzy,” her brother said.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada said the family is being provided consular services and that Canadian officials are working with Mexican authorities to resolve the case.

The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office said Ricardo S.P. had been arrested connection with the attack.
Meanwhile, in the West  Coast state of Michoacán there is an increase in feminicide which, will inevitably reflect this years statistics countrywide.

Of the 113 municipalities of Michoacán in 14 of them there is a Gender Alert and the murders against women continue to grow, says Deputy Zenaida Salvador.

The stats for  feminicides have increased 17% in the last two years in the state of Michoacán , deputy Zenaida Salvador Brígido claimed today before the Michoacán State Congress .

It should be emphasized that since 2014 the Gender Alert was issued in 14 of the 113 municipalities of the entity to work in the fight against violence against women, but this has not helped, on the contrary "homicides are increasing towards women with excessive cruelty and violence in different modalities. In the same way it seems to be related to the involvement of Mexican women in the struggle for their rights, " lamented the deputy of the Morena party.

According to information provided by Salvador Brígido in the Chamber of Deputies, the Attorney General's Office of Michoacán (FGM) registered 138 murdered women in 2016, by 2017 the figure rose to 139; In 2018, the increase was greater until reaching 162 feminicides, which is equivalent to an increase of 17% in this period.

The deputy announced on the subject of feminicides , ie , murders of women,  that this year alone year   from January to June already 53 women were deprived of life who were added to the list.  Feminicides have increased 17% , Salvador Brígido claimed today before the Michoacán State Congress.

He emphasized that since 2014 the Gender Alert was issued in 14 of the 113 municipalities of the entity to work in the fight against violence against women, but this has not helped, on the contrary "homicides are increasing towards women with excessive cruelty and violence in different modalities. In the same way it seems to be related to the involvement of Mexican women in the struggle for their rights, " lamented the deputy of the Morena bench.

According to information provided by Salvador Brígido in the Chamber of Deputies, the Attorney General's Office of Michoacán (FGM) registered 138 murdered women in 2016, by 2017 the figure rose to 139; In 2018, the increase has reached 162 feminicides, which is equivalent to an increase of 17% in this period.

"Feminicide is not an exclusive issue for women, it is a social problem where men should be included and their way of relating to women, feminicide is a complex problem, all as a population we must be aware of what this implies", Zenaida Salvador Brígido explained.

Given these figures, the legislator exalts that there is a legal vacuum in political and activist fields in relation to women, so she asked to add adequate protection through her initiative.

"Given this wave of violence that has been unleashed in recent years, it is necessary that the State pay attention to legislation on this matter, which guarantees security, integrity, equity, equality, protection, justice and respect for human rights to women, " concluded Deputy Zenaida.  She  hopes that this figure does not increase considerably before the end of the year, although they have already reported the murder of other women, even with their children.

  1. Another Black eye for 🇲🇽.

Why would Americans, Canadians and Europeans “vacation” in Mexico?

Saving a few dollars is not worth the risk but people roll the dice.

The poor woman is lucky to be alive.

  4. Disgusting. Ms. York’s family can easily arrange for Ricardo “N” to meet a horrific end if they send a couple thousand dollars to the local municipales.

  5. I probably would’ve been on the first flight out back to a Canadian hospital. Just saying. Travel insurance is quite cheap.

  6. I blame the mainstream media for lying to people. The truth of the matter is that Mexico is essentially war zone and a criminals playground. Just because the US president said some offensive shit about Mexicans eveyone wants to prove him wrong and take a vacation to Mexico just for this to happen. If the mainstream media wasn't such a cock sucker for social justice and actually have the spine and some actual journalists then they would report on the dangers of traveling to Mexico. This is like that one white bitch who went traveling around the middle east to prove that people are naturally good and she got raped by her cab driver...

  7. She thought Mexico was paradise? Lol quite the opposite. Only white people visit these places. I swear white guys kayak in Mexico. Stumble across something going on. Somewhere he should have never been to. Find his abandoned Volkswagen Van. And his people wonder what happened? Like hello, Mexico.

  8. It's terrible, but especially terrible when the victim becomes pregnant after. Happened to my girlfriend's cousin in Venezuela, was raped and became pregnant with twins! She has no money to support them, so everyone is sending stuff. Death penalty for rapists will come from the family and friends of the victim, if the law doesn't step in. Such a cowardly, selfish move that destroys many lives.

    1. Ignorance is a bliss, unfortunately. Mexico should be a no go zone for tourists, this coming from a Mexican who lives in Mexico. That will be the only way cartels will stop fucking with innocent people. Criminals/cartels will get real heat from the authorities for messing with their tourism dollars.

    2. Pues, Sol.....I agree NO NEED for RAPE !......but heyzues, she was gonna meet her mother. Staying in a bar (Naively, I admit) until 3am is not a sin. She stupidly and perhaps drunkenly answered the door. NOT advisable anywhere in the Universe. Unless it's my local bear brawler that killed my chickens AND trashed their coop. grrrrrrrrrr

  20. Pretty disgusting for a married 'family' man!OK he led a 'double life'.Rape is disgusting no matter what but this woman likely trusted being part of a couple and instead of taking her under his wing until her mother got there he brutally assaulted her.On the Canadian networks there is no mention of rape so everyone is perplexed and I thought maybe it was for a 'medical scam'.

  24. How naive is this woman? U open the door ALL THE WAY to a stranger? Knowing very well you are alone? 😣 She MUST'VE been sheltered her whole life! I would've spoken to him through the door. Why ? I hope this teaches her to be more careful and alert of her surroundings. That means DO NOT open the door to anyone tht isn't your mother or brother that will be showing up 😪 God grant her peace and comfort during these times of recovery ♥️

  27. I have worked as a insurance investigator in over 110 different countries and all of the Mexican states. I always purchase medical travel insurance on every trip. I have seen first hand and investigated foreigners being charged well over 300% what would normally be charged in the US by corrupt hospitals and physicians and these facilities usually do not let the foreign patient out of the facility until the bill is paid. Kidnapping? Yep! This young lady's story is horrible but it could have happened anywhere. The only difference with what will happen to the suspect is that if he has enough cash he will be released if the right people are paid. I travel by myself and DO NOT go out at night even in a good hotel. Playa Del Carmen has changed in the last ten years for the worse and honestly Cancun and all of this area is nothing short of a toilet. Beautiful beaches and wonderful hotels but you will pay for it by risking your life and your family members lives until things change.
