Largest Fentanayl Bust in history--254 pounds

NOGALES, Ariz. — US Customs and Border Protection reports its largest fentanyl bust ever, seizing 254 pounds of the opioid in Arizona.

PHOENIX — The Latest on a record fentanyl seizure at the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona (all times local):

11:30 a.m.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they have made their biggest fentanyl bust ever, capturing nearly 254 pounds (114 kilograms) of the deadly synthetic opioid in Arizona.

The Nogales CBP Port Director Michael Humphries said Thursday that the drug was seized Saturday from a tractor-trailer carrying produce from Mexico after it was stopped for inspection at the border crossing.

Agents also seized an additional 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of fentanyl pills and a large cache of methamphetamine.

The Mexican man driving the truck was arrested.

9:15 a.m.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Arizona say they’ve made their biggest fentanyl bust ever.

The agency says it will provide details Thursday during a late morning news conference at the Mariposa border crossing in Nogales, Arizona.

Authorities say illicit fentanyl in recent years has become the biggest source of fatal overdoses in the United States.

Mexican traffickers are increasingly smuggling the drug into the United States, mostly hidden in northbound passenger vehicles crossing at ports of entry in the Nogales and San Diego areas.

Law enforcement says the illicit version of the painkiller is now seen mostly as a white powder that can mixed with heroin for an extra kick and as blue pills that are counterfeits of prescription drugs like oxycodone.

  1. There's lot of other drugs, that get through the border checkpoint everyday, and that president says built the wall. It sure won't work.

    1. More comes in between the Ports-of-Entry (POEs) and through tunnels than people realize. The wall won't fix everything, but it'll help plug another hole and funnel shipments through areas that are easier to patrol/monitor. Plus, you can attach sensors to detect tunnel drilling. Walls with sensors is how Israel finds tunnels built by Hamas. Walls are also responsible for massive drops in crime in border city areas, which I have personally witnessed in two different areas of the country. They are not useless, but they are not the total solution that people are marketing them as either.

If people really wanted to fix the issue they would be for a total solution, rather than expecting one single item to fix everything. Walls, sensors, and drones in harder to traverse areas need to be coupled with increased agents at the gaps and tools to more efficiently detect loads at the POEs.

  7. This drug should be considered a weapon of mass destruction, over 200 pounds of that shit could probably kill all of Texas. Anyone on either side of the border caught selling this shit and meth as well should be given a lead slug to the head.

    2. It’s not Americans that love drugs, it’s humans that love drugs. Always have, always will. Drugs are just more precvalant in America because we make more money.

  10. CHINA is the origin of fentanyl precursors. China does not have enough people to audit what goes aboard ship? I am wondering what the genuine list price of the chemicals versus the Mercado Negro price the Cartels are willing to pay the Chinese. There has to be a money trail. Probably through an intermediary country. Taiwan? Hong Kong? I am willing to believe the precursor chemicals have little or no other commercial use. Make them illegal internationally, then ships that haul them, and their crews can be seized on the high seas. Mexican aduana, port captains, can ask for military assistance to verify cargo and be charged with violating international law. I can only wonder why I, myself, have these pipe dreams about control. Fascinating.

    1. Most fentanyl precursors have only one use, to produce fentanyl. And yet China allows the production of both with near impunity, until the US government can prove that one of their facilities was the source. Even then, all that occurs is that one facility may be shut down or have management replaced. The Chinese government is more likely complicit in the production and transportation of this stuff, rather than an innocent bystander like they keep trying to claim. They have long memories, and if people don't think they'd use the same tactics used against them by the British with the Opium Wars then folks might want to study their East Asia history a bit more...
