Mexico's New President's agenda includes amnesty for drug growers, kingpins

op-ed by Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Trump speaks with AMLO:

Trump reveals this morning he spoke to AMLO saying "we had a good conversation about a half hour long”.  They spoke about border security, NAFTA, trade and the possibility of a separate trade treaty between Mexico and United States.  Trump said he had a conversation with AMLO during one of his previous campaigns, at which time Trump told him, “someday you will be the president of Mexico”. . Something that AMLO remembers.  Trump thinks they will have a good relationship but says “we will see.”

Mexico’s new president "AMLO" views that are radically different that the past:
*It is not the problem or responsibility of Mexico to help the United States fight its “Drug War”
*Amnesty for drug kingpins and growers of marijuana and opium poppy plants
*Greatly reduce Mexico’s military in the fight against cartels
*AMLO’s suggestion regarding the U.S. border; he  says the United States should send its military to guard its borders.
*Open Borders:   He is in support of “Open Borders” and has no interest in helping the United States in its “illegal immigrant” problem
Mexico has a new president, at the end of its bloodiest campaign in history with over 130 murdered candidates. [22 of Mexico's 31 states have seen a political assassination since campaigning began in September. According to according to Etellekt, a crisis management group]

The newly elected leader, a leftist populist whose long political marathon,  has finally crossed the victory marker, in impressive fashion.  He had stated, this was his last presidential campaign.

For Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 64, of the more commonly known as “AMLO”, third time was the charm.  In his previous presidential attempts, [2006, 2012, 2018] AMLO failed to win the hearts and minds of the wealthy.  In this go around, the Morena political party candidatewas able to connect a broad group of supporters, even wealthy voters. Citizens who perhaps, are exasperated at the failed policies of the past, and the inability of previous administrations to curb deepened violence and corruption in Mexico.

In 2006, he refused to accept his narrow presidential election defeat, calling the election as fraud.  This triggered mass protests in the Zocalo in Mexico City that lasted a month.

The new president whose agenda has always had its focus on poverty, and corruption, which he feels are tormentors that are joined at the hip.  However, how he will be able to amend those issues remains  unclear.

As the former head of Mexico City, he was unable to achieve those goals.

As for drugs and kingpins, AMLO is thinking maybe a deal with the devil is the path to stride.  Saying perhaps that is the way to peace in a country that has lost 100’s of thousands of lives in its war against cartels. He must have forgotten that types of deals were what got Mexico to place it now finds itself in.

He wants to sit down and negotiate.  Even release the kingpins from prison.  A caveat being, saying, “If it is necessary … we will talk about granting amnesty so long as the victims and their families are willing,” he said.

And immigration?  Let’s look at the hypocrisy of Mexico.  Mexico has some of the toughest immigration laws on the planet.  Some align with what President Trump is hoping for.  It has a point system, stringent requirements, such as a personal connection to Mexico, and over a certain age, financial proof requirement, or a large business investment.

And let’s not forget the harsh treatment of immigrants while travelling in Mexico from its southern border.  According to Amnesty International some 12k economic migrants “disappear” each year, thousands of others are forcibly taken into servitude by the cartels.  Few care about migrants in Mexico, clearly not Mexican citizens, or its government.  There is little protection for migrants in Mexico other than religious based shelters like “Casa Migrante”.  And the government has deemed it illegal for migrants housed in shelter to stay for more than two days or be arrested.

So, the government “dismay” and those wealthy kids protesting at Zocalo against the U.S. and its immigration policies, should not fool anyone.

It’s difficult to determine what this new presidency will affect the United States.  On its face an AMLO presidency appears the antithesis of President Donald Trump.

But if one takes AMLO at his word, AMLO realizes, although there are major ideological differences, it is imperative that he works with the U.S., especially because of its geographical connection.

And there are alike comparatives between the two neighboring leaders.   They both have hair trigger reactions to criticisms, and are skillful at name calling and retaliatory hit-backs.

AMLO says he thinks he will get along with Trump, viewing Trumps rhetoric as political bombast targeting his base.  He says treaties with the U.S. such as NAFTA are of the utmost importance.

To the NYT; “I mean, the Brazilians, the French can fight with the U.S., but Mexico, for geopolitical reasons, we simply cannot,” he added. “We have to come to an agreement.”

Time will tell what will happen between these two presidents.  Who knows, maybe they will discover a brother from another mother…….but with such huge differences in desired policies, it would be wise to secure your seat belt, the ride looks bumpy ahead.

    4. The amnesty is not aimed for drug lords, did you think that the 53% of mexicans are dumb enough to buy that?. It's aimed for farmers that their only way to survive in the worst living conditions is to grow poppy or maijuana, to sell to drug cartels, not because they want but 'cause theres no other thing to do. Check the PIB of San Pedro Garza García, for example, and any town in Chiapas or Oaxaca. The tittle is totally wrong, really thought that there was objective investigators in here, at least the one who wrote this.

    5. Thats the way you control organized crime. You give them strict limits. If you do this we will come after you. The Mafia is good at following rules. What is asinine is continuing the militarized approach. Lets look back 10 years and see how that has worked out.

    11. If AMLO does start releasing mass mudering drug Lord's, one by one, they'll be picked off by CIA, or a host of mercs. This would most likely include the new president. No way the US will let that go. The guys that are locked up are used up. That's why they're locked up. z40 wouldn't make it 50 yds from the gate. Drone Strike. The gloves would be off at that point. Any resistance from Mex gov would be laughable. Farmers, non sicario type workers family, and white collars would be fine. But mass mudering sicarios, shot callers, kidnappers, rapists etc...they will be eliminated.

  10. The PRI House of Cards began to fall with the Iguala Massacre.

In Spring of 2014, Time Magazine had a cover showing EPN as "Saving Mexico." It was the "Mexican Moment," when Mexico was to join the First World, with a booming economy brought about by the "reforms."

By the end of the year after the Iguala Massacre, EPN's approval began to decline. The Casa Blanca scandal then hit. New independent media, such as SinEmbargo and Animal Politico, wouldn't let the corruption slide this time.

The "investigation" into the Iguala Massacre revealed hopeless incompetence and obstruction of justice, torture and planting evidence. This led the stubborn PRI team to begin losing fights with international and non-governmental groups around the world.

By Summer of 2015, PRI lost big time as the mid-terms. Since then it's been a non-stop string of corrupt Governors, Estafa Maestras, spying scandals and poor economic growth and inequality.

All of this led to the AMLO wave, but it began with the Iguala Massacre, covered expertly by Chivis right here.

Now they are behind once again in a legal billion dollar business. We need to remove the IV of venom the US is pumping Mexico with! Cartels have to be violent, but amnesty of OGs can reduce the innocent .blood shed. If you work and you steal or rob or kidnap, cartel justice will happen. You don't get the opportunity to pay your way out like you do with the current corrupt government. Legalise marijuana,do not allow us companies to invade. In 20 years it will be a different Mexico.

Why would America worry about the bloodshed in Mexico? Mexico is not concerned with the problems that drugs bring into America....it works both ways. Yes there are lots of addicts in America and so far, the Mexicans that supply the drugs to America are too stupid to understand the gold mine they are next to. Instead of working together, establishing boundaries, communicating weak points or partnering....the cartels are just greedy and fight among each other, not to mention....taking advantage of the innocent people of Mexico. When they started killing each other and killing innocent people in record numbers....that is when it became a problem!! Call Americans greedy all you want...but that greed has also affected the cartels that so many Mexicans cheer for.

I've seen Mexicans turn whole neighborhoods into barrios selling everything Mexican on the corners including their drugs. Not many here are aware of the political situation facing its citizens nor the worrisome uncertainty for other countries.
Points of view are clearly different depending on which side one sits on.
Mexicos citizens do benefit from his agenda to a certain degree. While a controversial and skeptical view is taken contrary by others (morally speaking).
Added with Business investments and trade agreements.
Question is? Will Mexico continue to uphold it's own immigration policies from those entities entering from its south. After all it's been U.S. financial services and support protecting its borders?
Geographically speaking; Mexico and U.S. are intertwined not only economically but culturally. It makes sense for both nations to come to agreements and solutions.
    Nice job Chivis.

I hope he does well and it improves the lives of the average Mexican citizen. I’ve never understood the trump derangement in the US, in that I don’t like most of what AMLO represents, but I would never wish him to fail. Failure means negative effects on human beings lives, and just as I wasn’t an Obama supporter, I didn’t want him to fail. 72. Well we can see that Mexico is off to a great start ! Why not just turn the entire nation over to the Drug Cartels and MS-13 gangs and have done with it ? This is what happens when you elect Leftists to high offices !

  73. It seems these people are playing americans against americans. That's the way it has been since the civil rights act; the blacks are doing the same to us and reaping the rewards with the mexicans joining in. Stick together americans (real americans) like the above mentioned people are doing and watch the different outcome. You can tell from our politicians how fighting each other is working out. When this country is finished we are all finished.
