Death details murky in BP Agent's death, may have fallen into culvert

By Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Information remains elusive regarding the deaths of border officer, Rogelio Martinez, 36 years old, and his partner. The FBI has taken over the case.

Martinez and his partner were patrolling near, highway 10,  from the Van Horn, Texas station , investigating suspicious activities near the expansive Big Bend National Park.  What exactly happened subsequently, is a mystery to the public.

Initially, far right news outlets such as Breitbart were quick to insist the attack was by “illegal aliens", most reports indicated the attack was from gunfire.  Authorities were compelled to discount gunfire but did not give an alternative method of attack, or even say there was an attack.  Breitbart then reported the Border Patrol Union stated, there was an attack by illegals, by ambush, with rocks.

However, that was proven to be untrue, posted on their website is a message that the cause is still undetermined.

Late yesterday, yet another possibility was given when it was determined that accident had not been ruled out, that the men may have fallen into the culvert by mishap. This would explain why neither officer drew their weapons during this time.  The unnamed survivor has amnesia since the accident; by the time help arrived he was in poor condition and no recall of the incident.
Rio Grande flows through Big Bend
The surviving officer, radioed for help from the culvert.  What was said by the officer has not been made public.

BP patrol officers are require to patrol in pairs, as the number of officers remains inadequate and are literally hours apart from each other.

The area is near Big Bend National Park, whose rugged, flat faced clifts, and steep inclines, make it almost impossible to use as a corridor for immigrant traffickers, although where the officers were sent, there is a narco corridor.  Narcos are well area of  how long it takes when responding to an emergency call out.

Jose Martinez, The father of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who died, says his son suffered serious injuries that left his head “destroyed.”  While speaking with the El Paso Times on Monday, he shared that doctors said his son, 36-year-old Rogelio Martinez, suffered repeated cardiac arrest before he died Sunday.  He said he discouraged his son from working in such a dangerous profession but the father said his son was determine to do what he could in fighting against drug trafficking and potential terrorists.

President Trump, when hearing about the tragedy, reminded lawmakers of the necessity of a border wall.  In this particular area however, a physical wall would be impossible,  any wall constructed in the area, would have to be a virtual wall, using surveillance technology.

The final construction of any “Border Wall”, will be a probable mix of physical and virtual components.

Update @ 1:33AM November 22:

Blasting CNN report,   and not giving any other details, union spokesman says;

Chris Cabrera, the spokesman for the National Border Patrol Union, told Laura Ingraham on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Tuesday that CNN’s story doesn’t make sense if you look at the area in Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas where the agents were found.
Big Bend is apx 120 miles of the border
Big Bend Sector woefully understaffed, response times are in the hours, and officers hours apart.

Below from BP

Release Date: November 19, 2017:

A U.S. Border Patrol agent died this morning as a result of injuries sustained while on patrol in the Big Bend Sector.

  2. Let me point out that there are two sources that can NEVER be believed. One is Brietbart which is an extreme rightwing trash website used to fuel the fires of any incident to make it political and the other is the leftwing socialist real trash HuffPost (formerly the Huffington Post). Funny how both the RIGHT & LEFT websites were formed and originated by the same person. This kind of tells you something. They both are not accredited news agencies and all they are is two websites. No building, no printing presses, no nothing. Glorified blog sites is all they are with reporters who are not reputable and offer fake news from both. Their purpose is no more then political rhetoric and to stir everyones hatred one way or the other. They love to antagonize and instigate. You could read the same story on both sites yet there are two separate outcomes. We need to wait for definitive details like I stated in Otis’s article. The initial investigation should have produced details that would have been released by this time. There is more we all DO NOT know yet, so we can’t jump the gun (no pun intended).

    3. Breitbart was acquired by Robert mercer after its founder died, then it was taken over by the likes of Stephen Bannon after his gaming affairs were exposed for "back channel" trucks, ercer also funded ted cruz and kellynne Conway was the ho in charge until trompas got to lead the reoublicans,
Arianna Huffington acquired her name from her husband, she never lost her thick Greek accent, Huffington Post was on the list of Mercer's properties but may have more independent views, while Breitbart has No Shame at all...
these days they are getting into hot water for secret e-mails and computer trickery and hacks connected to russian meddling in US affairs and the 2016 election of america's first russian puppet president, Robert Mercer's daughter rebekka is a comadre of kelyanne Conway and up to her high heels in shit too, but sinking...
Wonder how an Air Force computer geek got to be a multi-billionaire "hedge fund manager"? Ask Robert Mercer...

    4. 9:12 don’t read and rely on Wikileaks or the other “anti-anything” sites that prey on weak minds like your own and others. Brierbart & Huffington Post were formed and co-founded by one and the same Mr. Andrew Brierbart. He even assisted in the Drudge Report. Arianna Huffington was a original co-founder of the left wing blog as was Brierbart. Your reliance on Wikileaks another fake news blog is not worth a penny and the story you posted has no bearing or truth to it. Both blogs were founded one for the right and one for the left to cash in on opposing views. Real news agencies call them both internet troll sites. Your writing tends to be a liberal socialist one-sided view. Keep your selfish politcal views to yourself this site will not become your politcial venting point and I hope the people at BorderlandBeat agree with me here. The cause of many problems are from people like you asserting hatred of one-sided views when there are two or more aspects to everything. My political views are never spewed in such a non ethical way and everything you stated cannot be backed up by any factual proof. You too are in an attempt to stir the pot with your anti-Trump rhetoric and bigoted remarks by putting names and your opinion of them because it is obvious you are not a Republican or supporter of Trump, of which we care nothing about your opinion and you are following the tactics of Brierbart and The HuffPost. Everyone needs to keep their own personal views out of this blog. These opinions are as dangerous as the professional internet trolls of Brierbart & The HuffPost. I would hate to hear your theory of the border incident, I can imagine it would have something to do with illegal aliens from out of this world kind. Your copy and paste technique needs work too! I do not matter one bit.
YOU need to talk to special consel Robert Mueller out of his left wing persecutions of the latter days alt-martyrs he is railroading while they try to politicize police, unions, defense, veterans and NRA members to save their favorite prezident and his fiasco.
Lastly, we do not need grammar to write here and hang with the créme de la créme of grammarian snobs, how's about that, misspellcheck?

You Google too many fake news sites and rely on the left sad to say by your responses. Sorry to say, Mueller is well known for prosecuting terrorists and for your information. Robert Mercer DOES NOT own or finance Brierbart. He was a part owner amongst others and put forward millions as did Bannon, Milo and many others. He has since sold his stake and left (no pun intended). Mercer DOES NOT OWN Brierbart, NEVER did, was ONE of many partial owners at one time. NO MAS AMIGO! Please research your facts and put forward real info, you are spreading FAKE NEWS. Again, stay off Wiki and get the real scoop on Mercer and Mueller. Your idea of “Freedom of Information” is more like your “Freedom of DISINFORMATION” everything you state is refuted as FALSE.

    9. This is for @ 9:12 & @ 11:13. I have noticed your rhetoric and insane “theories” and blog posts throughout BB. They are so easy to spot with your distinct style of, how do I put this, writing. All of your posts concern the left agenda, bashing of the right, misinforming ppl with errant “facts” and your continual bigoted remarks of which you can support NO proof, evidence and/or facts. Your responses are littered throughout BB and like I said, very easy to spot. Your arrogance shows through your posts and you should really think about what you say before you hit “enter” unless that is your intentions to begin with. Please stop with your own personal political attacks, views or agenda, they are not the same as others on the BB. Everything you post is a personal attack on something.

It worries us very much that illegal immigrants were being held responsible as we are already racially profiled and targeted for wearing the color brown on our skin. We did agree on one thing if it wasn't an accident than it had to be mulas.Coyotes and illegals crossing aren't known to do this however mulas will protect the merchandise if given the opportunity. One of my colleagues did say what if they were surprised and shoved into a ravine or down mountain. God Bless the parents of these young men and the surviving officer. 5. Big Bend is relatively far from Van Horn, but there are mountainous areas on the border in the Van Horn area too. Desert mountain ranges that are located right on the border. These ranges begin in TX and extend into MX, and MX also has some mountain ranges that are on the border too. The Rio Grande passes through these ranges. So there are very deep canyons and they are very remote just like in Big Bend. The Quitman Mts and the Eagle Mts are 2 of the ranges with peaks as high as high as 6,800ft in the Quitman mts and the Eagle mts as high as 7,500ft. One of these areas is where it likely happened.

how much area in texas would est has a natural border?

      Delete
    9. Much of west and sw Texas have natural borders. East of El Paso has several mountain ranges that are natural barriers. Not just on TX side, but on Mexico side as well. But these ranges may cover anywhere from 23miles-30miles along the border then gaps of desert in between until you reach a small town called Presidio from there the mountains are continuous until you pass Del Rio and Acuna. But I would say 50% of the border from east of El Paso to the gulf has natural border barriers in the way of desert mountain ranges to lakes. From El Paso/Juarez to Del Rio/Acuna even without the mountains and lakes you have nothing but desert and many miles to a town or a road and no access to water. But there are many ranches near the border.

The river is the natural border and it extends from El Paso to the Gulf.

      Delete
    10. thank you. del rio/acuna does mark the section where crossing the river fairly easily begins. I was in DR-Acuna a couple yr ago where a fence was being built. i stopped and was taking fotos when a number of workers ran off. it was well before the street bridge going to amistad, more like adjacent to intl bridge. i wondered why there and if undocumented workers were being used. it looked that way. it was when obama ordered vehicle search for departing vehicles. which was also a fiasco. few cars were searched or stopped. bad idea anyway.

I am trying to figure out how much of the border can do without a wall. the other factor is native american land. some actually sits on the border, doubtful permission would be granted.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My guess is it happened int the Quitman mts. It is near the Van Horn station and it is well patrolled. It may be close to the station, but this range is very steep and rocky. Very loose rocks ad boulders throughout the range and like I said this is a very steep range and not easy to travel through. So slipping and falling in this range is very likely. I go through this station all the time and the agents do not wear the appropriate type of boots that one should wear if they are patrolling a mountainous region. They basically wear typical boots. Wearing boots makes it more likely they slipped and fell. I doubt agents are trained in mountain climbing, how to hike through mountains, etc. So the type of mountains, plus agents not being trained in this type of terrain (agents barely get out of their vehicles let alone get experienced in patrolling this terrain on foot), adding that they probably were not wearing the appropriate gear. All these factors together concluded with a preventable accident.

    ReplyDelete

    1. From my experiance the Boots depends on your weight. If you are lightweight with no or only small backbag, e.g. Bikes are great choise. If you have a heavy backbag you should wear military style Boots.

    the latest from BP Union:

"Chris Cabrera, the spokesman for the National Border Patrol Union, told Laura Ingraham on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Tuesday that CNN’s story doesn’t make sense if you look at the area in Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas where the agents were found."

He says it is possible but highly improbable. But he stops short from giving additional information or hypothesis from the union. If it was a short fall, it would seem unlikely that two men would fall. I will keep you posted. , keep your eyes on the Union, they will be among the first to know. if the second agent recovers hi memory, there will be no more guessing.

can anyone tell me...wouldn't there be crime scene tape where the incident occurred.? it is still under investigation.

    1. BS. Unlikely that misconduct or human error by their officers was the cause of this death is something any law enforcement corporation is going to say to defend their officers.
Now this stretch of land where this happened is very arid and an ambush by a group of people would have left many a footprint or even vehicle prints for days to come.
All these opinions from experts and or law enforcemnt agencies so far is hearsay and or still speculation at the very least.

  21. If it was a murder(dont know yet)it wasnt illegals trying to cross as all they really want is to get to the u.s with zero problems!now they could have stumbled onto drug traffickers or cayotes who were armed and got the jump on them and pushed them off the cliff(im just speculating so dont crucify me)!an 8 ft drop if you somehow land on your head just right can cause a nasty injury or even possible death!trump jumped the gun here on his opinion but they will eventually find out what really happened!

  23. I see all this speculation that tries to say there is zero percent chance it was common illegals . Whoever it was they were doing illegal activity . How can anybody say it wasn't a migrant trying to get up here to work . There are all kinds that come up here to work . Been working around them since I was a teenager back in the early 70's . These people come in all kinds . All the pro illegal aliens people "stereotype" illegal worse than the pro wall people . Fact is they aren't all angels . I have to admit it would more likely be a drug smuggler or a coyote that a migrant worker but we don't know and may never know . Could have been a mentally ill Gringo with a Nazi swastika tattooed between his eyes hitch hiking across the desert . Pretty far fetched but we just don't know .

    1. Not too mention this surviving BP agent loosing his memory of what happened when his partner died.
What if he killed him and injured himself to make it appear that some catastrophe happened to him? It has happened before where two cops being partners get into a fight and one ends up dead. Why can't this happend within Border Patrol?

  28. To the reader who hated this article primarily because of Breibart and no proof that the union did not say what breibart stated as fact.

Breibart does publish "factual news" at times. But they mostly publish hype and spin and steal work from bloggers without credit. I called them out on this and was attacked publicly on twitter. It was so immature and stupid. I asked 3 times to discuss privately because I thought we could come to an agreement. it was the editor and a reporter. I wanted them to at least give bloggers a nod.

as for proof. I think most readers can google the BP union , go to the website, and read the statement. I just posted it at the end of the post above.

Literally there is no news or clarification, or even manner of death. Usually that comes with the autopsy report. The government is doing a disservice to the public by not giving some information. fall? rock attack?

  31. CNN is reporting that the agent that survived called his wife the night of the incident and was confused about where he was. How strange? He was coherent enough to call his wife, so how can he not remember what happened?
